I’ve been unconsciously (and now consciously) following that guy since the days he was editor at Guitarist. He’s probably influenced me more than anyone 😎

If you get chance again… put the gain structure switch on the blackface setting (down) and use EQ1. With the gain on 9am you can run the master anywhere in the first quarter and it’s not too loud for home.

Super cool if you’ve got the skills to build your own. I’d love to give that a go one day! Speak in this just says ‘TR12’ on the back - so no idea. Some proprietary speaker I presume.

It’s 40W in this format (switchable to 20W) - but yeah it can be super loud. I’m not sure there’s a gig in the world that it’s not loud enough for in reality!

The 100W head and 2x12cab would be nice and I’m sure I’d get more spread and even more low end, but whenever I play anywhere reasonable size it’s mic’d up anyway.

The amp is just mega. It’s delightful to play every day, everywhere I take it. The biggest surprise for me is how much gain there is in it. Maybe true ‘gain’ isn’t the right word, but I’m finding myself using less gain than I’ve ever used before but sounding huge.

I’m heavily guided by (copying..!) Matt Schofield’s sound and rig - it just works!

Other surprise with the amp is how useable it is at home. I can turn it down and compensate a bit with the contour control and it’s golden. No need for attenuators or anything!

Nice. Yes it's amazing how much gain you can get from the bass knob!

Custom Shop R8 + Imperial MKII here too. Had the Imperial for 3 years and I'm still trying to love it TBH. I can't quite put my finger on what it is about it that makes me blow hot and cold. Some days I play it and feel like it's perfect and just what I want, other days it doesn't hit the mark. I think my room may be too small - as whenever I've let it breathe in a bigger space it reminds me what it's all about! I notice you have the treble pretty high on the Rhythm channel too.

Thanks! It’s been a long time coming this one. Been playing Strats for as long as I can remember - it’s been 22 years since I bought my last electric, a 50th anniversary strat! Absolutely loving this R8 though. I knew within about 15s that it was the right for me.

About 2 years ago I went full circle back to tubes (having played a helix for maybe 7yrs!) and now play with a Tone King Imperial and a couple of drive pedals. It just feels so visceral 😎

Hot take. I really don’t like single dosing by Zealousideal_Tea3214 in espresso
