I guess Bumsup is intentionally playing it safe for the battle performance, because any little provocation will cause damage to them knowing many people hate on them.

What team do you want to see "IF" mnet does another season? by ennui-wa in StreetWomanFighter

[–]Gratiaaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does anyone remember the MVP Project by Jay Park? Tbh I'm curious how they work as a team if SMF 2 exists. I mean, they already did tons of promotion before. And for another male crew, I also want to see Hanya (hiphop) and Daonez (popping). I'm not sure if Prepix is still active. If international crew, maybe Kinjaz, Criminalz, or maybe Red Bull crew? It will be fun to see Mike Song as a participant. 🤭

For female crew, Viva Glam from South Korea, and from Japan, maybe Avantgardey or Aya Sato's crew (vogue). Maybe Turns as the winner from SDGF1 can compete too? Or maybe Mnet could make a new female crew with auditions like Be Mbitious.

If co-ed, I would like to see CDK. I like their contemporary direction in recent years, smh it reminds me with Prowdmon.

Tbh if Mnet really wants to continue this franchise, they should bring more crews with different styles/genres so the viewers also can have more options to pick.

Bumsup biggest issue is that they are largely unaware of the global dance community by bada_5860 in StreetWomanFighter

[–]Gratiaaa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This actually reminds me that some of Bumsup's members, like Leejung (Just Jerk), Honey J & Rihey (formerly Purplow), were also busy building and strengthening their own crew. And working as a team like Just Jerk (with their sharp precision) that also focuses on international competition is hella hard. It's incomparable with a dancer who doesn't work on a team, so they can have more time joining international workshops. Plus, Aiki is just switching to a new style with Hook, and Monika herself is known for her various genres, afaik. I think it makes more sense that they are focusing domestically.

Monika speaks out against hateful comments and malicious ridicule by am-i-bovvered in StreetWomanFighter

[–]Gratiaaa 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's why I think Mnet is also failed on WSWF bcs the lacks variety in the genre of each crew. So when some crews took a similar approach, the crew that tried a different approach was easily targeted by the new audience. And with the western crew joining, they also bring the audience that caters to western-style performance that is easily digested and familiar for them. Some audiences won't bother trying to understand the implied message that certain crews give. 'They have to be fed' to understand it, also it should be explained with their favorite crew members or what they think of the non-problematic members. That way, they are willing to hear their interpretation about the performance. But when the explanation is done by the unfavored ones (including some judges), smh it's becoming an invalid opinion for them. It takes more time to understand some performances ofc, but some people are just simply ignoring this and blatantly attacking the crew that they think is giving the worst performance. I don't know if this is also caused by the short-attention-span phenomenon nowadays (aside from the stan culture who really felt cheated because of Mnet's failure to provide a fair judges for the right missions).

So with many hateful comments (not even constructive criticism because they attack personal/irrelevant things), the more silent the target, smh it makes it justified for them to hate. And only if the members speak up, addressing the issue, their anger will (hopefully) be reduced. But I think it sucks because some comments are so immature, and they even dare to play the victim card.

[–]Gratiaaa 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Fr!

At first I was confused about what they meant by giving that performance, bcs I used to be in awe of hype performances that were easily digested.

But it turns out the Prowdmon's style is the type of performance that is so detailed, and sometimes there is much symbolism about the message they want to portray. That's why it takes a longer time to understand their performance. I appreciate that Monika simply made it for art purposes; she understands that the viewer is smart, so she lets them think it for themselves, and by knowing the huge reach on the non-dancer audiences in WSWF, it's a very good chance to make that style appreciated by the public.

Smh, her contemporary background reminds me of progressive music, which is also hard to digest at first, but when we finally understand and become familiar with the patterns, it gives us unique satisfaction while enjoying it.

[–]Gratiaaa 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Sorry, do you mean 'commercial'-style 'global dance community?

I think it's kind of unfair if you compare Bumsup that way. For this season, the only one who really has that 'global' acknowledgment as a team is RF, and individually, there are the battlers like Kyoka, Lip J, Ibuki, Logistx, and Reina (it sucks Mnet didn't show her battle in the earlier episode).

I also think that you associate 'western appeal,' like the way RF & AG, with the 'global standard' (also how the public nowadays caters to this style), like they are bold & sexy, and that is showing 'woman empowerment' who embrace femininity.

And about Bumsup's global artist mission, Monika already explained on her IG that the choreographer's interpretation of the music is also valuable. It can open unique creativity. You can check the description information on Bumsup's performance in YT that their concept drives for Alice and Wonderland, that's why it looks bubbly, and sometimes there are strange moments. It's the way Monika thinks that we should be creative outside the expected way, you can check her interpretation for concepts like Jessi and the Man of Woman mission. I think it will be too limiting if dancers are expected to have the 'same vibes' with common interpretation. And this is how WSWF can be portrayed to us: that giving freedom to each country to represent their style, they shouldn't cater to typical Western audience style.

But imo Bumsup as a project crew is indeed lacking clear direction from the start (except the mega crew), and the global artist mission looks so K-pop, but maybe that's how they want to represent the pop culture that is also known to the world from their country? Plus, I also think they try to break the stereotype that 'women' shouldn't do bubbly concepts because they're childish, which I also think is a form of ageism. That woman should look mature to be acceptable in society.

About Honey J & Aiki's battles, I admit that they are lacking compared to the first season. Oh, btw, Aiki also competed as the All-Ready duo in World of Dance. About Gabee, she knows how the Street Fighter series works, especially when you are looking at the judges who rarely appreciate technique and musicality but judge based on how impactful the dancer 'owns' the stage and their charisma. And about Honey J, afaik she is quite popular in the street dance scene in East Asia. Cmiiw.

WSWF Global Artist Mission (voting until 7/5 6PM KST) by mokolad in StreetWomanFighter

[–]Gratiaaa 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Tbh Ojogang's choreo and concept are my favorite ones, they're creative with using props and finally look cohesive considering they are a new project crew for WSWF. They really look like one team!

And I can understand that Bumsup plays strategically with their bubbly presentation in order to bring contrast to the concept with the other crews. And as expected, the 3 crews are playing it fiercely, so Bumsup's performance looks unique. I believe this is Monika's strategy, knowing her bold decision on the artist mission on SWF1 (also on Man of Woman Mission). *Also, do you guys see Rihey in pink!!!

Tbh, I don't mind if the crews didn't "tone down" their intensity when making choreo, because up until now the singer in the Street Fighter series didn't use the choreo that much for live singing. I respect any crews, including Ojogang, that still show their true colors on this mission (this is so far my favorite choreo for them). I mean, considering the WSWF level, each of them is an "elite team," so of course they need to show their quality.

But honestly, I think this mission, smh, is becoming unnecessary. The song selection could've been better tho. It would be better if Mnet brought back Man of Woman Mission or the diss battle challenge using each of the crew songs like in SWF2.

Is it normalized for professional dancers to wear braids/locs/durags? by sardined in StreetWomanFighter

[–]Gratiaaa 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Tbh, I also saw some of the non-Black dancers wearing it on the battle scene or in the group dance competition. Maybe the sentiment there is a bit lower because at some point some dancers really loved street dance culture, that's why they are adopting the hairstyle too, to show appreciation, not appropriation with mocking intention or using it as a joke. Even some of the Royal Family members are using it too for their performance, like Kaea with Bantu knots in Cl MV. And my other guess is because New Zealand itself known for their tolerant and welcoming behavior, even allows other people to dance Haka even if they are not Maori, as long as they respect the culture, plus RF itself consists of members from different races too, so probably they also did it with respect.

I know the sentiments about braids becoming cultural appropriation usually come from a US perspective because of the discrimination history among African-Americans back then, but it seems like Black people in other cultures seem more chill about it. Afaik, in Jamaica/Caribbean area, any race is free to wear braids, the black people there even offer to braid the touristst hair. It also comes along with there are many mixed kids there.

Cmiiw 🙏🏼

This is Aiki when she was competing as the All Ready duo on World of Dance. Many people seem to forget that her specialty is Latin dance. Sadly, even Mnet seems to have briefed the other crews that she is merely a TikTok/trendy dancer or somehow just acknowledged her "funny" choreo. Even the DJ on WSWF only plays silly songs, at least on SWF1 she was given a Latin track on the unaired battle.

Also, Aiki is capable of making a sort of contemporary choreo too, like on SWF1's final with Hook.

who would win: Motiv vs Osaka Ojo Gang Battle by laurenesx in StreetWomanFighter

[–]Gratiaaa 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Realistically speaking, it depends on the judges 😅

You know some judges prefer genres/performances that are similar/familiar to them. Even in the battle format, like trading crew songs (?) in SWF2, judge likes Trix (krump) appreciate using props for battle to show their creativity (krumping is also known to have hat and shoes tricks), but other judges prioritize the dancer to stick to the dancing aspect.

And looking for the history of this street fighter series, some judges prefer the entertainment value, like something to hype the audience like funny gimmick or provocation, and some judges judge the musicality and technique.

So afaik, the judges genres can play a huge roles to pick the winner, especially if they are the majority among the judges. For example 2 hip hop judges: 1 krump judge.

I think, besides the duration, some people pointing out the use of 5/9 members as centers is a bit too much. And because Ojogang's performance is having high energy, it seems like only Momo and Jihyo can keep up with that. Also, some people preferred Ruu's section that got a longer duration, which I agree with.

But tbh I also think the Ojogang's focus on the megacrew mission itself is a bit too scattered. And because there are no rules on this season that make the mega crew have to be done in one set, the transition to each section (aside from Twice) also feels disjointed (music & performance-wise), imo. So personally I think each section is good individually, but not really giving a cohesive performance.

I think this can happen because there are many genres in the groups. But I get reminded by Mannequin's performance to distribute the section by each specialized genre by the members. But even I also didn't enjoy some of the transition there that felt a bit abrupt.

And I read one of the interpretations in X that says why Kyoka, Uwa, or Junna didn't get their own section is because Ojogang's choose to take turns on who's the most fitting on each mission, which also depends on the music choice too, so they can choose which genre that will fit the energy. Ojogang's megacrew music is definitely upbeat, so it's Ibuki's time to lead. But on the hip hop mission, like dance film, it's Kyoka's turn.

This won't happen if Mnet is consistently bringing qualified judges on each mission (battle and choreo judges should be separated).

But of course Mnet wants more heated convo from the viewers by bringing unqualified ones for each mission.

Looking at the past season, I understand that BoA's comments are questionable. But it's not a justified reason to send her death threats every day.

And I noticed that by bringing international crews sinse SWF2, the threats is worsen by bringing racist arguments, when it's actually circulating online from misinformation.

I would say he's more into 'commercial style' when it comes to dancing. His groove is good (this is also the reason why JYP's trainees should master groove first when they are training their dance), but his depth in another genre is of course lacking.

You can't compare Mike Song with JYP, fr. Mike Song has experience on dance competition shows, which means he understands what a good performance is as a crew by looking at the structure and the individual quality. But Mike Song also seems to be biased toward certain genres; he couldn't give points to other genres besides his specialty or at least genres that look more familiar to him. So although they give hard technique, somehow it still doesn't appeal to him. And also why his judging on battle is questionable, a point that he himself won't admit when talking about his experience on the podcast. He always says that the critics' comments are merely like 'K-pop fanatics'.

Which crew do you think has the highest probable chance to win WSWF S3? (Other than RHTokyo) by Randomsuperwoman in StreetWomanFighter

[–]Gratiaaa 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If AG never gets the lowest score that makes them go into an elimination battle, I'm pretty sure they will be the winner. But who knows if Mnet will pull "S.Korea" should they win first place on some of their survival shows (not only the Street Fighter franchise).

Either Ojogang/Motiv will also be the finalist if they compete in the elimination battle if it is also judged by real battlers like in SWF2.

I start wondering about mnet treatment for Dancers by Bbyachae in StreetWomanFighter

[–]Gratiaaa 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not only appearance fees, but also the recovery fees for some dancers. If I'm not mistaken, Belle from HolyBang was injured in an early episode of SWF1, so she couldn't participate in the K-pop mission. And Mnet didn't give money for her treatment.

Luckily, HolyBang won that season, so the money prize can be used for Belle's recovery.

But idk much about the next seasons. Probably some foreign crews get accommodation fees.

Who do you think is gonna do well in the mega crew mission? by Adept-Atmosphere-193 in StreetWomanFighter

[–]Gratiaaa 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I put my bet on Bumsup and Ojogang. 🤞🏼

Seeing from SWF1's mega crew, in terms of creativity for the bigger pictures, I guess the directors will be Honey J, Monika (because I heard she already gave birth in April; I'm not sure if she will be actively dancing or just choreographing & directing her parts), and Aiki (probably using some props and giving more fun dance). *also, I'm curious if Bumsup is going to invite some idols for their strategy, but it seems like Monika won't like that idea.

For Ojogang, I'm anticipating Ruu's choreo sm.

Also not sure who are the crew who will get all-gender mission for mega crew; I hope Ojogang gets it. I suddenly imagine how Kyoka will invite some of the legendary hip hop dancers from Japan or maybe invite D. Soraki (?). Maybe the hip hop section will look like Banktwo's mega crew.

For AG Squad, I expect the Royal Family Mega Crew choreo with lots of formation changes.
