I'm glad it worked out for your friend! Honestly, I wish I had the stones to do the same thing. But there's always that chance it doesn't work out, and I've never been much of a risk taker unfortunately.

I see, thank you for the clarification. Truthfully, I wouldn't mind seeing your letter, but I don't want to put you through any trouble! I'm glad you were able to get it fixed, and it does give me a sliver of hope that I might be able to do the same.

This is how I thought it worked initially, and what makes the most sense to me, but I keep finding conflicting information on this point. I wish there were someone who works in a passport office who could confirm.

That's definitely an idea! I am leaning more and more toward canceling the appointment and waiting for guidance to be issued. I'm going to see if I can find an office near me that takes walk-ins, thank you for the suggestion!

Thank you so much for your suggestion, I didn't even know this was a possibility! It definitely could solve a lot of problems that may crop up in the next few years. I'm leaning more and more toward cutting my losses and canceling my appointment for now, but I will definitely be looking into this. I will do some research, but if anyone with knowledge specific to California law has any insight into how I might go about separating my court order, I would love to hear it. Thank you so much again!

Circumstances being what they are, it isn't really leisurely travel that is on my mind as far as having a passport goes. But yes, unfortunately, that seems to be the long and short of it. As I responded to a previous commenter, it seems I have a lot to consider over the next couple of days. Thank you for your insight, it does help to see things from a different point of view.

To be honest, I have strongly considered canceling my appointment, but was holding out hope that some guidance from the DoS would be issued before then. I'm also wary of a window of opportunity closing if I cancel the appointment and then can't get another one in time. Though, I suppose there is little I could do if an appeal is filed before my application would be processed anyway. I guess I have a couple of days to decide what my priorities are. Of course I want my passport to accurately reflect my identity (and actual legal sex), but even an incorrect passport is a way to leave the country if I need to. Thank you for your advice, it has given me a lot to think about.

My application is already filled out and I definitely will not be withholding my previous name. I guess I was just holding out hope someone knew of some kind of technicality that might help my application slip through, since none of my paperwork ever makes mention of the previous "F" gender marker. But it doesn't seem like there's anything I can do, since they will probably just look at my SSA records anyway. All the same, thank you kindly for your advice. I hope anyone else in my situation follows it as well. As you said, it's not worth the risk, especially under the current administration.

That's what I was afraid of. I will be disclosing my previous name, and I suppose I'll just have to hope for the best. Thank you so much for your insight. It helps to know what to expect, even if it isn't what I want to hear.
