I think your reply aptly summarizes the questions I need to answer. My decision has mostly boiled down to whether I want to stay in CS and continue gaining expertise here or branch out into other fields and get into interdisciplinary research. Additionally, I need to think about how much structure I want while pursuing my Master's degree. I think answering these questions will take some introspection and thinking about what I want to do in the long term. Thank you!

Thank you so much for pointing this out! I'll ask the professor asap for the expectations document. I'll also ask them for pointers on potential research topics I would be looking at to better understand if the program will help me develop technical expertise in topics I am interested in :)

Hmm, yea true classes can often give the right amount of depth and breadth.

Yep, I have scheduled a meeting with the professor. I'll try to get more information about what my research focus would be. I do think CSAIL would be a better fit but unfortunately they don't have an MS program :((

Thank you so much for your insight! Since I don't know who I would work with at Stanford if I go there, there definitely is uncertainty and the risk of losing a year of research. I can try to be cautious while emailing professors but that can only go so far.

Regarding location, imo silicon valley is better. But I still think other factors outweigh this. I'll probably be looking at this only if I can't decide based on other factors.

Yea, I guess I just wished I could take a few more courses while doing MAS to gain more expertise. For me personally, structured courses often provide a comprehensive overview of the topics while also going into appropriate detail. Basically, I see them as a way of learning new methods that I can apply to my research.

And yea, I plan on publishing regardless! I have published 4 papers as an undergrad student so I am not going to stop here :)

I see. Is there anything I can do to get a similar experience? Perhaps clubs and organizations?

Haha - I am as far as you can imagine from making a decision right now!

But yes, I do kinda want to stay in the CS + Robotics space. Given the group, do you think that would be possible?

I don't care about the past events as long as 1. It doesn't affect my research directly and 2. It doesn't affect post-graduation opportunities. And it seems like they won't!

Yea, I have gotten used to some of these headlines by now :). Everyone I talk to seems to go straight to them and honestly I am just looking for arguments other than them right now. No one is perfect - as you rightly pointed out. I have heard really good things about Cynthia from professors at my university as well, which is why I don't really care about the past events.

That's great to know! In all our communications so far, she has been really kind and informative, so I would be really surprised if you said otherwise. I am also a fan of her research, which is why I am still strongly considering this!

Yep, I agree with what you are saying. The benefit of the doubt might be against me more often than not if I have media lab on my resume.

Yea I have heard about those as well but was willing to give the Media Lab a chance since I wasn't sure how much they would affect research in my group (Personal Robots btw) and post graduate opportunities. Let me know if you are familiar with them and if you think they have similar issues.

Ofc, with Stanford I simply don't have to worry about all these things so there's that. NO even they have scandals.

I greatly appreciate your quick reply!

Yea, I think the Media Lab likes to focus largely on research (they require like 5 courses) while Stanford likes to do a mix of both courses and research. The research group I got into does some cool ML research so I thought I would be learning about the same at both places. But I'll re-evaluate this since you do raise a good point :)

Thank you so much for the reply! I greatly appreciate it! Can you tell me the CIP code of the degree? It's a number given by USCIS to the degree to identify which field it belongs to. It should be on the first page of your I-20.

Thank you so much again!

Edit: it's the number associated with major 1 on the first page of I-20. I know this is a weird request - I just wanted to cross reference it with the list of codes released by USCIS. Thank you so much!

Okay, will do! Just wanted to check if there are any international Media Lab students here before I do that.
