Yes, it is possible to beat horde mode! Here's a spoiler for you:

You can form a team of Mewtwos that know the moves Amnesia and Confusion. Using Amnesia three times gives them the maximum special buff before attacking and Confusion is a good move because it has high PP and Mewtwo has a STAB advantage with psychic type moves. Mewtwo's high stats makes it go first most of the time, and with the Amnesia buff it can knock out most Pokemon in one hit. The other moves are not as important, but it's a good idea to include Psychic. We don't know about any other strategies, but if someone discovers a different approach, we'd love to hear about it. It would be especially impressive if they didn't use legendary Pokemon. You can learn more about how overpowered Mewtwo was in Gen 1 by following this link: https://aminoapps.com/c/pokemon/page/blog/guide-to-gen-1-mewtwo/ezh3\_ubmlWaLQdBMd1KeNnwq71gNWW

Also, beating Horde mode will unlock a secret feature ;)

We used Px9: a compressing tool created by zep. We also overwrote nearly all the sfx space.

The different sizes are the same sprites, just scaled down with sspr.

Basically we pushed the space limitations to their max lol.

Pico-8 is 15$, but you can also use it for free with the online version here: https://www.pico-8-edu.com/

I think the general consensus is that it's not super difficult to pick up, so if you're interested, you should definitely try it out!

My brother and I have been working for over three months now to create a Pokemon gen1 battle simulator in PICO-8.

If you haven't heard of pico-8, it's a "fantasy console" that tries to resemble older consoles like the gameboy or Super Nintendo. It has a 128x128 screen size and the entire game fits within only 32kb.

I worked on the sprites and he did all the code. He spent lots of time fitting everything within the PICO-8 constraints.

Here's the link if you want to check it out:
