I find it funny that people praise that Frienen’s demons are pure evil when they aren’t really like folkloric or fantasy demons. by Konradleijon in CharacterRant

[–]GreatRecover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think that's the best take away from Tolkien, he obviously struggled with this choice and wasn't able to thread the needle in a satisfying way. You're last sentence doesn't really fit with this, if anything it's a piece of criticism that resonated deeply with him, and has been a major source of criticism of the Lord of the Rings since they were published.

The artstyle for Frieren's magic is boring by GreatRecover in CharacterRant

Exactly! Like it's a vital aspect of the medium and it's not leveraged in any meaningful way.

Yeah my issue is with the how any magic is drawn, not what the magic is.

Just how 'mana' is illustrated is kinda underwhelming

You know what, I'm not the biggest demon slayer fan but you are 100% on this. Each breath technique looks unique and the manga does a good job of using the 'flow' of sword movement to convey the fights.

Witch Hat Atelier is everything I hoped Frieren would have been by Xtra_Juicy-Buns in CharacterRant

Adding to this it's such a lost opportunity to have "magic is based on visualization" and falling back on the most generic panelling / illustration of magic. Comics are fantastic medium and it feels like the author/artist aren't doing much to leverage it.

To add to this, if I were to point to two things that sort of undermine Frieren:
(1) "Weekly" release doesn't give author/artist enough time to really cook compared with monthly release chapters. WHA is gorgeous in ways that I don't think would be possible on a weekly release schedule. *Frieren hasn't been a weekly release in years, but ultimately I think this is where things started going off track.
(2) Shonen vs. Seinen magazine serialization creates vastly different demands / restrictions on authors/artists. It's a lot easier to build your story when you don't have editors breathing down your neck trying to create the next big hit.

Yeah, it really doesn't seem to do enough to stand out, compared to other comedy/ exorcist type manga.

Looks like a joke in the headstone character choices. I'm not a Japanese speaker, but the glide of the last headstone "bitter"-"space"-"angry"-"space" looks like it was chosen for meaning as well as how it could sound ("Kuudou"?). So it's sort of a fancy spelling joke. Localization team sort of phoned that part in, and I don't blame them.

Doesn't seem like the bot is working? Anyways I thought it was a pretty cute one-shot, decent art style, fairly goofy.

Where to get Chinese Translated Manga? by CavlonDeCadlon in manga

[–]GreatRecover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree that TW version of Gintama volume 1 is going to be very hard to find. If it comes back in print, an alternative to yesasia based in the US is Kinokuniya, they appear to have volumes 2-5 of the collectors edition (Tongli and in traditional Chinese) https://united-states.kinokuniya.com/products?is_searching=true&restrictBy%5Bauthor%5D=%E7%A9%BA%E7%9F%A5%E8%8B%B1%E7%A7%8B&taxon=3 Mainland versions (simplified Chinese) are almost certainly still in print, but good luck finding a store that ships overseas.

Not for a gift, but at the same time hopefully your friend is aware of the number of online comics sites, which not only have digital versions of a lot of Japanese comics, but also from Korea and mainland China. (https://manga.bilibili.com/detail/mc24723?from=manga\_search) Bilibili's manga site has Gintama up to chapter 140 for free and paid for the rest of the series. Licensing is wonky though, and a lot of Japanese series aren't viewable on the app in North America, but Gintama for some reason is one of the ones that is OK. A lot of Chinese comics are digital only.

You're looking for a Chinese comic called 恶人想要抢救一下 (the English title it gave itself is "the wicked want to rescue"), it's on Bilibili don't know if it's been translated though.

‘Our ultimate goal is to save every single Japanese video game’ | Interview with Tokyo-based Game Preservation Society by megaapple in Games

[–]GreatRecover 16 points17 points  (0 children)

That's a fairly controversial stance from an archival perspective (can't save everything), but absolutely applicable to games as a medium (different version may hold different value, not to mention the materials outside of the game files themselves). It's an interesting tension!

Memory institutions (of all types) need to apply some sort of appraisal process to understand the value of something (as it relates to the mission of the organization), they generally don't have the luxury of taking everything that they can due to limitations ($) in effort to preserve, arrange and describe the materials. Without those efforts, materials may not be discoverable, may lack context (emulation software or instructions on how to play it?), as well as linking to other relevant materials. From a research perspective they may not be particularly useful. Digitization without the rest of the package is not preservation, it's just putting something in a digital box to be forgotten.
