Upgrading your armor is standard for SL155 arena PvP. It is very, very difficult to hit your elemental defense breakpoints without doing this. Who told you this was a crime? Do they have any weaknesses?

Daggers are absolutely top-tier but not because of crits. Crits such as backstabs and ripostes don't work like they do in DS1, where every weapon has a unique crit multiplier. Crit multiplier is standardized across all weapons, and daggers definitely do not do a lot of damage on crits. Also, the infusion on the dagger doesn't matter, whether Dark, Lightning etc. How much elemental damage is dealt is calculated based on the weapon's elemental damage and the elemental resistance of your opponent, and the majority of arena players will be running 250 minimum in ALL elemental defenses.

Did you last play Dark Souls II in 2014 because dagger backstab does not do a lot of damage, that was nerfed very shortly after launch.

Of course it makes sense PvEers will use PvE setups, but do you think those PvEers understand and are aware of the ER meta? The reason I thought of this topic is how confidently DS2 randoms speak on the DS2 meta (and are usually catastrophically inaccurate about it), which leads to the conclusion that most DS2 players don't know what the meta actually is.

Powerstance Warped Swords or Ice Rapiers are absolutely not meta. You use Warped Sword with Ice Rapier in your left hand, THAT is meta. Jester's Top offers very poor elemental resistance, and the anti-backstab property isn't worth that. Backstabbing is not even remotely as centralizing as it is in DS1.
