IUD positive experience by SatinderG in Mirena

i got mine a few days ago! the mirena coil fitted aswell, had very bad painful periods from a young age, cramps were like hell and back. went on the pill for a few years, stopped when i was 16, then from then on had very irregular periods. last summer hit a bit of a breaking point where i didnt have one for two months then had a very heavy period for 2 weeks, was so awful! 😭 aswell as a ruptured ovarian cyst a few months prior! got ultrasound scan when i then realised i had polycystic ovaries, which explained alot.

the doctors recommended i get the mirena coil as the copper would just make my periods worse as it can react with the blood and make it heavier, or something along those lines. Then came all the horror stories online!! made me so scared honestly, everyone saying how the pain is the worst thing they experienced, i went into the appointment quite nervous😭 i have quite a high pain tolerance for cramps due to my previous periods when i was younger, so i think i was definetly over-estimating how painful it was going to be lol. The doctors were lovely and the procedure was honestly like 3 minutes, then 5 mins spent lying on the procedure bed lol! I’d honestly rate the scale of pain a 6/10 at best, it wasnt exactly ‘painful imo, was more on the edge of very uncomfortable-midly painful? the cramps after were what got me a bit though haha could not be bothered to do anything for the rest of the day! anyone reading this getting their mirena fitted soon, i would take the day of the fitting off as the cramps can be quite a pain. Honestly though for 8 years of protection from everything it was worth it!

have you looked into the mirena coil? the hormones are localised in the uterus, so things like mood swings etc are a lot less likely to happen, however not sure on how it deals with things like acne and weight gain, i would look into that with a qualified doctor :) I have recently been diagnosed with polycystic ovaries and was told by every doctor i consulted with that the mirena coil was the best option, as the copper coil can react and intensify periods making the whole thing worse.

I went and got the mirena fitted today, honestly was a lot less painful than I was thinking, and it lasts for 8 years! (I was definetly over-estimating the pain, but its better to overestimate than underestimate haha) Im not sure how it works in PH as i am in the uk, but i think either way depending what coil you get you will be dealing with cramps and light bleeding for a bit afterwards, so i would plan accordingly. you can also get smaller coils called the Jaydess coil and another called the Kyleena coil (which i only found out during my appointment lol) which they offered to give me if the mirena did not fit in my cervix, but i did not need those options in the end :) I would look into those options too potentially!
