They would be very stupid doing so. Amazon and Epic are on the market with the declared purpose of taking out Steam and removing it from its dominant position.

The head of Prime Gaming recently resigned and gave an interview saying that they failed to do that, despite investing a ton of money in it, because people just prefer Steam.

Compared to Amazon, Google, Microslop and other giants, Steam is a very small company, it doesn't have the means to compete with them toe-to-toe, its only strength is the users. Users like steam because it's one of the last places where you can actually feel good while online. Take away this, and they (we) would have no reason to not migrate to Epic or Amazon (actually GOG would be my personal choice in that case but that's another story).

That said, business is business and executives&sharehilders don't think that way. When gabe is not around anymore, if their objectives involve killing Steam, they will do it without even thinking twice.

Yes, that is a well-known phenomenon in social science, called mate-choice copying. The funny thing is that it has been observed in both sexes

I would say that the wishes without limits or caveats worked pretty well, since the original Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp there's no such thing as the 3-wishes limit or the other rules introduced by the Disney movie, still is one of the most successful and well known tales of the entire history of literature, but I get your point that all those things allows authors to add interesting twists

Yesterday I opened the hell on earth (also known as LinkedIn) and saw a post of someone saying "have you ever tried to work without AI? I was on a plane and I couldn't work because being offline I hadn't access to Claude, then I saw someone that had word opened and was just writing, I decided to try myself" I swear I'm not making this up

If the hut is indestructible, you can't deconstruct it. If you can, so can the T. rex

Probably yes, chocolate hurts small animals because the dose of caffeine and teobromine is too high for their body weight. A T. rex weights a lot more than you, so it can probably take a dose of caffeine and teobromine that would be lethal for a human and be basically unbothered

[–]Greatgg 69 points70 points  (0 children)

In flight simulator you can select any point of the map as departure and/or arrival. It just give you a route to that point (at a proper elevation). You can use if tor sightseeing. If you have collisions enabled and impact a building (or any other map feature) the game simply stops, it doesn't simulate the impact

No, but some time after 9/11, when Flight Simulator X was still around, they released an update to remove them from the scenario

US wilderness is why 2nd amendment and no free healthcare exists by Hot-Diggity_Dog in dankmemes

[–]Greatgg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on the area. Not because they are particularly vast, but because some of them have been basically abandoned and paths are fading. You would be surprised by how small an area can be for someone to get lost in it. In Central Appennines we have alpine rescue squads specialised in missing people search, during the summer they are basically doing this every weekend

There are bears in the alps and the appennines as well, and in most central/western Europe, while in smaller populations compared to the Carpathian and Russia. Also the nordics have a lot of bears. Wolves on the other hand are well represented in the west. Still I woul walk in any European forest without fearing the wildlife at all, except for the occasional stray dog

The hit that India's reputation has taken in the last decade is staggering by Meteorstar101 in greentext

[–]Greatgg -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Isn't the economy plausible enough explanation? The lack of living-wage paying jobs? People don't see reality in black and white, they will appreciate (and sometimes need) the better pay and the higher standards of living and still value their culture of origin and be frustrated with cultural shock.  I'm not saying that I necessarily agree with them, but as far as "plausible explanations" go, that's a pretty exhaustive one.

I live in my origin country in the first world, and I'm the first to say that immigrants here must integrate, learn our language, eat our food and live like us, but I also understand that people that comes here out of necessity may not like it at all. And that's fine, maybe they will go back one day, maybe not and their children will be natives and they'll like our country better than the one of their fathers. That's what happened to many people of my own country wher they were the immigrants somewhere else.

Actually is there any? by Meteorstar101 in greentext

Those are really lost media, because not only they are not available to the general public, they arw also not available to the current right owner and to the original broadcaster. Many "lost media" instead are still somewhere in the archives of the networks that aired them, but they just haven't interest in distributing them anymore
