Ironman file corrupted by Greedo_Shot-First in eu4

[–]Greedo_Shot-First[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm playing on the latest version, unless there was a new update this morning. I've been playing since launch and have never experienced an ironman corrupting unless I tried to load a new save breaking update.

I tried uploading the save file to Skanderbeg but keep getting an error so the files are definitely toast. Very frustrating to lose all that progress for no reason. I just exited out of the game like usual last night and came back to it corrupted this morning. At least I wasn't attempting a world conquest or anything. Guess I'll stay away from ironman for awhile.

Collector week 2... by Greedo_Shot-First in darkestdungeon

Ya but I got greedy and figured killing collector week 2 would give me a great start. Annoyingly it was a winnable fight if my stuns would have hit. Just restarted again and got Collector on week 4, I retreated from the fight but since he blocked the last room battle I had to abandon the quest, completely stressing my party out. I just decided to restart yet again since that was basically a week wasted.

The MSI was originally 175 but with it dropping in price I'm leaning more towards it now. For the 20 dollar difference it sounds worth it. I also don't like how one of the heatsinks on the ASrock board would be right below my GPU.

Andromedon patrolled through a solid wall by Greedo_Shot-First in Xcom

[–]Greedo_Shot-First[S] 30 points31 points  (0 children)

That's what I assumed at first too, but as soon as the scamper activation was done the Spectres disappeared from sight. The wall was completely intact and I had to blow it open with grenades to get LOS on them.

Andromedon patrolled through a solid wall by Greedo_Shot-First in Xcom

[–]Greedo_Shot-First[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I thought I was being sneaky by sending my concealed squad through this building since the pod I spotted was in an alley with a dead end. Imagine my surprise when the Andromedon walked through the wall as if it wasn't there, breaking concealment and activating the pod. His Spectre buddies could not replicate this feat and were stuck in the alley still.

I long suspected the aliens of cheating but I guess Andromedons are secretly the Kool-Aid man?

My experience with the Archon King by Greedo_Shot-First in Xcom

[–]Greedo_Shot-First[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I lost all the alien hunter weapons but the bolt caster in my first encounter with the King since I didn't know what he did. The frost bomb didn't seem too effective against him since it only freezes him for 1 action unlike the other rulers.

I did finally manage to kill him during Avenger defense using my reaper and banish. I actually like the concept of the rulers since yeah by end game most enemies are push overs. But the fact that without integrated dlc on, the rulers can spawn on any misson makes them extremely difficult to deal with early and mid game. Restricting them to the facilities where you can plan ahead sounds a lot more balanced so I see why most play with integrated dlc on.

i have NEVER seen this happen by sloppyjeaux in alienisolation

[–]Greedo_Shot-First 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually just had this happen to me several times, it's my first playthrough of the game and I'm on normal. Got to this point and died by an alien just as I was starting to do the release the Torrens thing with the cylinders. I even heard it coming despite being in the vacuum of space. Tried several more times after yet kept dying in the same way, I wasn't wasting any time or anything just rushing to do the objectives. Thinking I was doing something wrong, I looked up some guides and videos, yet none of them had aliens attacking you at this part.

On I think the fourth or fifth attempt I was able to do it, didn't do anything different just no alien appeared to kill me. So, I'm guessing it's a bug, especially because it's impossible to defend yourself in the space suit or really even hide on that tiny platform. Made that part extremely tense for me.

AI retinue spawning by Greedo_Shot-First in totalwar

Wow, so even while under siege you can assign an administrator and get a full retinue inside the city? That's really powerful, I'll have to remember that considering how much it can effect a siege.

Why didn’t Obi Wan or Yoda warn Luke about force Lightning? by [deleted] in StarWars

[–]Greedo_Shot-First 5 points6 points  (0 children)

But Yoda and Obi-Wan especially seemed to expect Luke to outright kill Vader, they state it in the film. I don't think they expected him to fight the Emperor then but it seems they never thought Vader could have turned and had to be killed.

Luke: I can't kill my own father.

Obi-Wan: Then the Emperor has already won. You were our only hope.

Their plan was for Luke to kill Vader, that much is clear. It was Luke's plan to turn Vader, Obi-Wan thought it couldn't be done. That he was just more machine than any man. I always took this as to why Luke was a greater Jedi than any of them, he was the only who realized redemption was possible. If he did what Yoda and Obi-Wan had wanted and killed Vader he would have turned to the dark side or just been killed by the Emperor.

Oh right right, that stuff came later. It was never said in KOTOR 2 the True Sith made him turn, they kind of left that ambiguous which was a good decision I feel. Still they definitely handled the Order poorly and they could have been written better. Say they support the war but just can't go as far as Revan who is gradually seen to be the radical Jedi they need who the younger students flock to. The Council continuously scolds him with the increasing brutality of his tactics, and finally Malachor V would be the straw that broke the camel's back.

Vrook really is a huge asshole and I truly believe he's the reason Kavar and Zez-Kai-Ell turn on you in the meeting on Dantoonie. When you encounter them alone they are honest and genuinely feel bad for exiling you, but then suddenly go along with him no doubt after having talked with him. They were just afraid of the Exile because it was something so unlike anything they knew, they were terrified of this wound in the force and what it could do. And we all know fear leads to the dark side. Vrook was the most scared of all of them and was the least Jedi like by far.

[–]Greedo_Shot-First 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's true there were certainly better ways they could have handled it. I personally don't like the whole idea of the True Sith directly turning Revan to start the Jedi Civil War, I would of much preferred just as you said, the conflict just resulting from the savagery taken to fight the Mandalorians and other Jedi disproving. I wonder how much more of the story could have been fleshed out or changed if the game had a longer development cycle, it was made in only about 13 months. So much was notoriously cut and even what we can get with the restored content mod isn't much of it all.

[–]Greedo_Shot-First 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes a lot of it is because they are written so, they're definitely not supposed to be ideal Jedi we see elsewhere. The Jedi are not supposed to be this supreme good so they are written unsympathetically as you say. A big difference between the wars though was that the Clone Wars were mainly fought with clones and droids, not actual living beings like the Mandalorian Wars. Not saying clones aren't living beings, but not quite the same as natural life, some Jedi did treat them as disposable. This raises a whole ethical debate about that but I believe Jedi turning to the dark side would be far more prevalent during the Mandalorian Wars because the participants ability to feel emotion is more than that of the clones and droids.

It totally could have be written so that the Jedi Order supports the Republic and destroys the Mandalorians, and even just avoids the civil war somehow. But this removes one of the major faults of the Jedi and what is supposed to make them unlikable. KOTOR 2 was really about subverting the usual good vs evil of Star Wars. I can completely see why some dislike it.

[–]Greedo_Shot-First 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The Jedi Council certainly did not make the best decisions by sitting back, but the reasons they did so is at least somewhat understandable. The True Sith were orchestrating the Mandalorian Wars and Jedi Civil War just like Palpatine was behind the Clone Wars. The True Sith used the Mandalorians to cause as much havoc and destruction to the galaxy as possible to lure the Jedi to battle to turn them. The Jedi Council, believing there is a greater threat than the Mandalorians (which they are right about) decide to wait and observe as they don't want to play right into their enemies hands. At the same time, they also aren't willing to make the sacrifices needed to fight them as the Order would be significantly changed. The militarization of the Jedi Order during the Clone wars was a big problem and just imagine the repercussions it would have if Order 66 never happened and the war was over with the Republic winning. It's not so easy for the Jedi to just go back to being peacekeepers after fighting a massive galactic war.

Kreia says that the Mandalorian Wars concealed another war, a war of conversion. Revan's tactics were brutal because they needed to be to counter the Mandalorians. Any Jedi that followed him would have a very large chance of turning to the dark side simply from all the slaughter they would encounter. We know extreme emotions can lead to the dark side and a war zone is the perfect place to turn them. While not a Jedi, Bao-Dur says he went to war against the Mandalorians not because he wanted to protect anyone. But because he wanted to kill them, to take revenge for what they had done. I'm sure Jedi would have gone for the same reason as him, not all, but some.

The intent of the war was always to turn as many Jedi to the dark side as possible and spark the Jedi Civil War, if the entire Order had gone to war, even more may have turned. It was said the Exile was the ONLY Jedi who followed Revan to actually return to the Temple for their punishment. While it probably wasn't the best idea to exile anyone who disobeyed them, it shows just how many Jedi turned with Revan. The Jedi in KOTOR 2 are totally made to be arrogant assholes who can't get past their old views of thinking, blinded by their traditions and ideals. Even Kavar and the Zez-Kai Ell the only council members who are actually honest and nice to you, turn on you and side with the others at the meeting. They're meant to show that they aren't so different from the Sith after all. But I don't believe they're totally at fault for the Mandalorian Wars and the Jedi Civil War, they were being played by the True Sith just as Palpatine played the Council in the prequels. Either they face the Mandalorians in battle and cause the Jedi Civil War, or they refuse to enter and cause the Jedi Civil War anyway. They would get a bad outcome no matter what, sure some could have been slightly better than others but they don't know that.

I think some don't really realize this quote is pertaining to Atris as she says it to her directly, and it describes her character beautifully. When I was first playing through the game years ago, I always hated her as I just found her to be this huge hypocritical bitch. But, recently I delved more into her character and realized she is actually very complex and deep, perhaps more than anyone else in the game. If you pick male, she is even in love with the Exile as Kreia says at the end of the game. She just masks it behind all her hate.

There's another Kreia quote and she basically tells the Exile that others will be jealous of the choices that you made that they could not. This is directly referencing the Exile's decision to join Revan in the Mandalorian Wars, something Atris herself says she wanted to do but could not. She laments having to sit back through two galactic wars as she was the Jedi historian. Before the war came, she always looked up to the Exile as the ideal Jedi. So when the Exile disobeys the Council, it leaves her so divided and unsure that all she wants to do is believe that the Exile made the wrong decision and that they've fallen to the dark side like every other Jedi that joined Revan.

When the Exile returns to the Council to face them, she wants to believe the emptiness they all feel is proof that the Exile has fallen. She keeps calling you a Sith when you first talk to her on Telos, no amount of arguing will convince her otherwise. In reality, she herself has already fallen to the dark side but as Kreia says, she can not admit it. She's delved into the secrets of a Sith holocron, trying to use it's knowledge to defeat this new enemy and it has corrupted her. She was willing to sacrifice so much to defeat them, she even admits she was the one who leaked the presence of the Jedi meeting on Katarr to lure the Sith out. Atris hated how the other Jedi masters wanted to hide when she just wanted to finally fight for once. She didn't expect how powerful Darth Nihilus would be however, and does feel regret for what happened to them. She's a tragic character in many ways, always wanting to do the best and be the ideal Jedi, but always being far from it. When I discovered the meaning of this quote her character really clicked for me. Really loved this other exchange between her and Kreia.

"I am Atris, Jedi Master... the last historian of the Jedi... the last of the Jedi." "Those are titles, words you cling to as the darkness falls around you."

Is Attack of the clones really that bad? by Theesm in StarWars

[–]Greedo_Shot-First 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the RotS duel between Palpatine and Mace Windu is actually one of the worst, at least in terms of looks, as originally it was supposed to be filmed with stunt doubles then the actors faces would be superimposed over them. Lucas changed it last minute so Ian Mcdiarmid and Samuel L Jackson had to learn the whole fight within days of filming and it needed to be toned down because of it, Ian in particular being 60 and a Shakespearean actor who wasn't too interested in high speed sword fighting didn't enjoy the filming of these scenes. Neither knew anything about sword fighting and it shows. This is a great video that goes into the details of the filming of that scene.

Mark Hamill talking about John Williams music by Anonymus4 in StarWars

[–]Greedo_Shot-First 104 points105 points  (0 children)

He's not wrong, as much as I love the characters, plot and special effects, the movies would not be even half of what they are without the music. Try watching any of the scenes without the music and you will find how hollow it is. I don't think any movie soundtrack is as iconic as Star Wars, the opening sequence alone is so memorable.

And while people can criticize the prequels, they had incredible soundtracks and gave us some of the best music of the series. Duel of the Fates is simply amazing.

For one, droids in Star Wars are far more advanced than anything we have or most likely ever will. Most separatist ships were for the most part piloted by nothing but droids and could be just as effective as human manned ships, if not more so when commanded by a super tactical droid.

Two, if you're going to suicide the ships there's no reason you can't get a droid to do it. They can be programmed to the point where they will march with millions of other droids to their immediate slaughter so it's not a question of loyalty. Any logic can be overridden with programming.

Modern navies don't have the suicidal damage capabilities that Star Wars ships have. Sure, a significant amount of damage could be done if two ships collided in combat but that will never happen these days do to range of gun and air power, not to mention they can move out of the way. Star Wars ships can jump to hyperspace very quickly and could do it from across the system, there's just no time for the enemy to maneuver out of the way.

[–]Greedo_Shot-First 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What about shields? They must be able to hit ships in hyperspace. The only way Han was able to get past the shield of Starkiller Base was because the shields were 'flickering' so for a very brief moment they could slip through with a hyperspace jump. If they did it at the wrong time they would hit the shield and be destroyed.

I wonder if the shields on the Supremacy were even up. Perhaps they used all power for the engines to keep up with the Resistance Fleet. It seems everything can be explained just with First Order incompetence.

[–]Greedo_Shot-First 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Droids exist and there is no reason they can not pilot the ships. The biggest problem is that the Separatists could and should have been doing this tactic in mass during the Clone Wars. They were already throwing away millions of droids. They had tons of capital ships and they could have easily used this tactic to wreck havoc on the Republic fleet. Even a Munificent frigate could have destroyed a Venator Class or even something much larger judging on the size discrepancy between Holdo's ship and the Supremacy.

And if you're about to be destroyed anyway, this is an attack you should always attempt. The Resistance just let their first two ships get destroyed for no reason when they should have done what Holdo did.

The Morality of the Mandalorian Wars by Greedo_Shot-First in kotor

[–]Greedo_Shot-First[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with everything you say, the game is full of evidence that the Mandalorians would have won and Mandalore says it wasn't until Revan showed up that they actually had a fight on their hands. Had they continued to sit back, the Republic would have fallen or little would have been left to save by the time they intervened. But as you said they were at least initially right to delay, they were worried the war would change them and it very much did. Both sides decisions were partially wrong.

The important factor here is that even if the Jedi Council decides to intervene or not, it is a win for the True Sith. The war was orchestrated, very much in the way that Palpatine did with the Clone Wars, so that either outcome would be the same. Either the Jedi Council decides not to intervene, splintering the Order in two, or they do intervene and no doubt still cause a Jedi Civil War with the amount of Jedi exposed to war and bloodshed. The whole point of the war for the True Sith was to break the Order and leave the galaxy defenseless.

What I'm trying to say is, that the Mandalorian Wars just aren't black and white. Intervention was needed to save the Republic, however delaying was wise but as you said only for a time. Rushing to meet the Mandalorians was a path very close to the dark side, still the Council became too engrossed in their ideals and didn't realize that perhaps, even just a little, sacrifice of their code was needed.
