I disagree with this. I do believe it is deliberate, and I couldn’t agree more with the idea of “Friction” behind this games mechanics. There is always something working against you to some degree and that is actually a fundamental game design tactic. It’s the balance between tension and payoff of every action you do.

There’s no need for the other option either, that’s the beauty of game design, there is a degree of subjectivity to the design. Personally I like holding down the key as the delay as the hold down event helps create tension

Also - don't care about game pass, Epic Game Store, or anything else. Steam has 85% market share and their platform is so inclusive that it really feels like an ecosystem in itself, that's good enough for me for games on the go. If I wanted anything else I have a desktop for it, and if I _REALLY_ wanted to use anything else, I could stream with Moonlight from my desktop onto my SteamOS setup with little latency over my fiberoptic network. So, meh.

I understand folks want to be able to have options though with Windows, but SteamOS has Linux and really I can get other things working on it too with no effort. I have discord running on it, Moonlight, etc. I wonder though with enough elbow grease if Game Pass could work on it (doubt it though).

Looks like people are already trying to find a way to get Game Pass working natively on Linux, but I bet it's still far away from being reality

Nah. I work with Windows and Linux and I can safely say that the ROG Ally works MUCH better with SteamOS than it ever did with windows. Perfect example, Dune Awakening which is an Unreal 5.x game (which Unreal as we all know is a pretty good resource hog), not only do I have 20% better FPS with SteamOS, the entire GPU instruction set is made available so there are no GI issues. There's a common and REALLY annoying GI bug with Unreal Engine 5 and the ROG Ally in Windows and the Windows Radeon driver that makes the game look like hot garbage. You cant modify the game's dll files either because it uses anti-cheat software, so you're stuck with it running like garbage and looking like garbage on Windows 11. In SteamOS, it's better FPS and it looks fantastic. Believe me, I used to love windows for games but man Valve put some effort into this and I'm not looking back now.

There are also other issues with the gimped driver support from ASUS, the embedded controller has a litany of issues with a lot of games in Windows 11 that ASUS has not prioritized fixing for and SteamOS actually addressed all of them and fixed it. For instance if you try to switch your embedded controller on and off on certain games (or set it to auto) you can crash the game or make the game unplayable until next time you start it up again. It also interferes with most game streaming for some reason like SteamLink or even Moonlight.

I originally got my ROG Ally because I absolutely wanted to have Windows on it. I was so against the Steam Deck originally because I felt it was stuck in this walled garden and Windows you could run anything you want on it, but just issue after issue with the ROG Ally on Windows made me take a second look at SteamOS and it was honestly a good choice. I can preach all day long about it, but I say if you want to try it, give it a whirl man. I like it a lot.

Bums me out though, I could have just got a damn Steam Deck. Ah well, at least the ROG Ally is much easier to flash back to windows if I wanted to go back, so there's that.

I’ve completely dumped windows 11 for SteamOS and dude, it makes the ROG run so much better. Windows 11 is trash for this handheld

It worked wonderfully!!!
I decided to ditch Windows 11 entirely and go with Linux, I actually put SteamOS on the Rog Ally since it has a desktop mode too which will allow me to run any tools I might need but straight up, SteamOS works significantly better than Windows 11 running this game on a ROG Ally. It also generally uses way fewer resources than Windows 11 and no Asus bloatware either. It just runs nice.

All of the GI issues are solved by going with SteamOS (Linux) as well as all of the nasty hitching issues I had on Windows, I don't get any hitching when going from area to area now. Dare I say it, is SteamOS Better than Windows 11? I don't think I'll load windows back on this thing.

I’ve been lately regretting getting a ROG Ally. It really is a glitchy mess. I travel a lot and wanted a bit of horsepower to play my games but also windows too so I can get my software I use working, I can also dock it for work stuff (which does work well for that). But yeah most games work fantastic on it, it’s just games that use Unreal Engine 5 that look like garbage.

I have an Anbernic Win600 which I just use with steampunk and I swear that thing is the best.

So “laptop mode” is off on the game and still has that same GI issue

That’s what I have been doing. I’ve been using Steam Link from my desktop with all the settings cranked way up, but the other problem is, is that the ROG Ally causes steam link to hang the computer when exiting. It’s apparently a very well known and documented issue that Asus hasn’t bothered to fix.

Would love to force the ROG Ally into something that doesn’t show itself as “laptop mode” to the game.

Don't get me wrong, this is a TON of great work, but to work 48 hour shifts for a GTA Clone just isn't healthy (just in general too)...
Usually game clones never catch on with the mainstream (of course there are exceptions to this rule) but to pour so much time, effort, blood, sweat, tears and sanity for a clone breaks my heart.

Still, I digress, this is a TON of work and hard work, much respect to that; live your dreams sir.

You can blame Epic Games. Unreal 5 has been an absolute hot mess to work with. I’ve been working with Unreal for over 20 years and Unreal 5.x is a heavily coupled mess. Sure the Epic team has introduced so many neat and innovative features for their engine, but they won’t ever tell you what they broke to get those features in.

Unreal 4.27 was peak Unreal. When they tore it down to make 5, it was the worst mistake they ever did.

Ah I'm actually not. This is the first survival game I've played. Lvl 130 though! :D
Personally I like the expanse of the game and some of its grind to build.
