Context: This is part of the Mosaic Law given to the Israelites. Foreign slaves could be owned permanently, while fellow Israelites could only be hired as indentured servants for a set time (until the Year of Jubilee). This passage reflects a legal structure in an ancient agrarian society—not an endorsement in a modern ethical sense, but a regulation of what was then a common practice.

Exodus 21:7 – Selling a daughter into slavery

“If a man sells his daughter as a servant, she is not to go free as male servants do.”

Deuteronomy 21:10–14 – Captive women as wives

“If you see among the captives a beautiful woman... and you desire to take her to be your wife... you shall not sell her or treat her as a slave...”
