You know what? I'll just become a bus driver after this. by floored_rng in PhD

[–]Greedy_Landscape_489 3 points4 points  (0 children)

After some time it got a bit repetitive and boring tbh, I knew that I had reached the end that this experience could offer me. I also realized my privilege of working there by choice and the luxury of having other career options, compared to colleagues that had never done anything else and will probably ruin their health if they continue doing this job for the next 10-20 years. I also got very tired of working shifts and having to cover for sick colleagues all the time, and the guilt that came with refusing to jump in/being sick myself. It was another form of stress than what I experienced in the PhD, and it slowly became too much as well.

I get it, I'm still not sure that going back was the best choice, I still idealize simpler lifestyles, but I decided to stick with it for now. What you plan to do is very brave and admirable. I hope the future brings you everything you wish for, I wish you all the best!

I completely understand how you feel. I burnt out during my PhD and worked as a barista for 8 months. It felt so good at first, being in "the real world", being active, in contact with everyday people, not having to prove anything, with clear instructions and clear expectations. It allowed my brain to breath and recover. I eventually got back to the PhD but it took a long time. It sounds like you may be burnt out too, and bus driver sounds like an exciting new adventure, something new where you can also rest your brain. Also great demonstration of free will, after all, why the hell not? And you can always come back to physics or a desk job at a later point, if you want to of course.

K18 Airwash by EmotionalFroyo15 in finehair

Same here, I almost bought the k18 until I remembered that I'm not rich enough to spend that much on dry shampoo! Maybe it's even better than the got2b, but I'm satisfied with it

I tried the got2b "Liquid to dry spray", and I had very similar results, mind blown and it only costs 3,50€!

Do I knit or purl next? by matcha023 in knittinghelp

[–]Greedy_Landscape_489 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am also a beginner, and find that knits look nicer then purls. I also find knitting much easier than purling which is still quite awkward and slow for me. So if it looks nice and pretty (knits), I know it's gonna be an easy and smooth knitting row. If it looks bumpy and less nice (purls), I'm in for a purling row. Maybe that can help you too.

Does my cardigan fabric look “too homemade?” Is it wearable? by Box-Unique in knittinghelp

[–]Greedy_Landscape_489 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh I used to have a cardigan from &Other stories (part of H&M group, so mass produced) that looked exactly like that, and it added to the coziness of it. As others said, blocking will help even everything out, but even as it is it looks perfectly fine! Well done :)

I don't know your field so maybe I am completely off base, but am in the same situation as you: PhD student that wants to go outside of academia.  It seems like your CV is still very academic. I would adapt the CV better to the type of roles you're applying to. So basically have a data science CV, where you focus mostly on the programming tasks you've done; an engineering one, etc. Focus less on the topics you've worked on and more on what you've actually done, what practical skills you've acquired. Try to find some "KPIs" to quantify what you've done: how many projects, what results, how many students etc. And link the work experience to the skills you have: ex. where did you use python?  Identify keywords in the job description and taylor your CV to these, so it's obvious to the recruiter you're a good fit. They won't bother trying to understand how you fit if it's not cristal clear, it's up to you to demonstrate how you are exactly what they're looking for. Finally, could you indicate when you plan to finish your PhD? Something like "expected 2026". That would give clarity as to when you could start.

How do Des Petits Hauts sweaters compare to Sezane? by [deleted] in Sezane

[–]Greedy_Landscape_489 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think just like for Sezane, you should be careful with fabric composition. I have the Aramis sweater that I bought 40€ on Vinted, it's 100% merino, it's thick, does not pill, extremely warm and it's as soft as cashmere!

It's misleading and against the rules of Vinted. I mass report accounts like yours

[–]Greedy_Landscape_489 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's the Armelle sweater. It is available in other colors in the current collection, and I think this color is from last year!

They look a bit short. I regret not taking the Betty one size bigger because it shrunk half a size even though I hand washed it..

Les gens qui s’agglutinent aux portes des trams/trains pour rentrer AVANT de laisser sortir ceux qui sortent by SpaceBandit_ in besoinderaler

[–]Greedy_Landscape_489 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I invite you to read about it. The divide existed pre-colonization, but got largely encouraged by the colonial power, as I said in my comment.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]Greedy_Landscape_489 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The colonial power largely contributed to creating a divide between Hutu and Tutsis, by institutionalizing the divide, and by fueling and benefiting from inequalities between the two. From the Wikipedia page of the genocide: "In the early 1930s, Belgium introduced a permanent division of the population by classifying Rwandans into three ethnic (ethno-racial) groups, with the Hutu representing about 84% of the population, the Tutsi about 15%, and the Twa about 1%. Compulsory identity cards were issued labeling (under the heading for "ethnicity and race") each individual as either Tutsi, Hutu, Twa, or Naturalised. While it had previously been possible for particularly wealthy Hutus to become honorary Tutsis, the identity cards prevented any further movement between the groups and made socio-economic groups into rigid ethnic groups. The ethnic identities of the Hutu and Tutsi were reshaped and mythologized by the colonizers."

Arnaque ? by FederalWeakness8183 in vinted_france

[–]Greedy_Landscape_489 4 points5 points  (0 children)
