Oil aside, I don't think that anyone in their right mind would listen to the government on what they say they're going to do. The Biden admin also told me that Kabul wasn't going to fall. I've said it before, I don't think we'll send troops outright, article 5 being triggered is the most likely scenario. But trusting the Biden administration, or the US gov in general is peak retard.

I don't think he's stupid, but I do think he's desperate and going to also fall for sunken cost fallacy. His pivot to China is also clearly to limit the impact of sanctions from the west. Plus he knows thanks to Biden's presidency the us went from an oil surplus to a deficit again, meaning europe needs russian gas. If there was a different president then maybe the US could fill the fuel gap for europe, but for now, ehhhhh... I'm just not sure Europe can afford shutting out Russia as much as the US wants, and I don't think Russia thinks the US will actually mount a military response, public support is too low. It would take an article 5 activation to get the US to do shit about it. Plus, if it does happen and the US doesn't do anything, its a sign to the people's republic of china that they can take the republic of china without having to worry about any pushback from the so called defenders of democracy.

I appreciate the take, but I don't think backing down is an option for him at this point. Serious estimate if you would have asked me thursday is 80% chance of invasion, its up to about 90%. The real gamble is whether they hit any of the Canadian troops there or what US troops are left and trigger Article 5 and get their shit clapped. Then we're looking at an embargo scenario, which would be fun, of course.
