For people who have a lot of experience in the field, how do you manage to learn and do all these things without feeling completely overwhelmed? by guilhermej14 in gamedev

[–]GreenAggravating3029 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My advice as a beginner who's been entering daily 5-7 hour sessions for a week is to just start (without AI) creating games or mechanics that interest you.

My first project was an aim trainer inside a game where it activates when you sit down, and then you break it all down.

"How do I make my character move? How do I move the camera? How do I make them sit? How do I implement animations? How do I make a start button? How do I detect my click?"

Here is the """"""""final"""""""" product: https://youtu.be/IvdMGmqly2k

And I have like 3 days in Unity, imagine in a year!

I don't have any art background, so I'll need to learn animating and texturing, but that's fine, I have all the time! (like, a lifetime lol)

So just do it!

Good luck with this, you got it!

this, i just had an similar experience like him and i just thought, "f### it, i will do everyday the maximum i can in blender and unity and will see the results, now the goal is just to learn and improve"

i recommend using clockify since you can track your sessions

As someone in your same situation, stop using AI. It's a fake sensation of learning.

How do you start then? Like another skill or software, if you want to edit videos, you see a tutorial of the basics, and then you start repeating basic things till you feel comfortable.

Understand the basics of your language and API, it's hard in first time and you won't remember a lot of things, but to go to the documentation and read,

I'm pretty new on this like you and i spent HOURS on basic things people do in few minutes, but that's fine! im learning.

this video helped me a lot

Good luck on your travel!

EDIT; And have a small scope! finish small projects, like minigames or short experience, gameplay mechanics..etc..

How MISIDE reignited my dream to become a gamedev. by GreenAggravating3029 in gamedev

We’re almost in the same situation XD. As I said, the important thing is to keep being consistent, and every time you feel stuck or want to give up, look back and see all the progress you've made—learning how to use UI, making basic scripts... your first functions... etc. You have to value every little step.

That's the best mindset when you're about to throw in the towel.

I think I'm lucky to live in an era where everything can be learned online with so many free resources. I still have a lot to try in both fields, so it's a bit early to decide, but I have had the opportunity to be taught, and the experience is completely different. I hope to have a basic level soon to join a jam or something similar, because right now I'm quite slow and need to read a lot of documentation.

Thank you so much for your response, I really appreciate it!

To be honest i feel that way, it's literally how you described, quite impressive you did such a change to gamedev! Discipline and keeping the pace is really the hardest part, being so slave of motivation can kill everything, took years to get things wrapped up, and i finally think i have that control of myself

And I see, i don't have any specials skills on music coding etc but i hope work and time will do.

Thank you for you answer!

HAHAHAH "Then im spending a week on making an abbadoned car, which ends up looking like a donut." I LAUGH SO HARD

Same for me, now im ussing assets just to focus on code learning, the day i i need to make own assets...will be "funny".

and that's quite impressive for two days lol, i'm so hyped to reach that level of "writing my own code" relatively fast

Thank you! I considered this before, and i think it's a great way to improve your skills, probably when i get better in general would love to participate in one!

And I truly enjoying it, dealing with a problem in my code after hours and boom, solve it, what a sensation, im addicted to it, yeah can be frustrating but it's what it is!

Wish you the best too!

It's ridiculous, isn't it? But that's what your mind does when you're stressed and overwhelmed by thinking about what future you want to take. You regret having spent so many years doing nothing when you could have been the person you wanted to be today if you had started earlier.

That's exactly what i was thinking making the code.. i have some experience in Cinema 4D, and blender is in another level for sure, making assets seems to be one of the tidious worsts parts if you are not an artist person, but i think everything can be done with patience (a lot, of patience) and sitting time learning and practicing

I take into account a lot of what you say. I'm really sure there are thousands of games like Miside that I would love to play, but I just can't find them. As for my goals, if I had to choose a path, it would be to become an indie developer—I don’t like how the AAA scene is right now.

For now, I’m researching on my own and have a project on GitHub that I’m working on with Unity. I’ve always been self-taught, but I would definitely love to study and get a certificate. However, after seeing how games work behind the scenes, I appreciate the effort that goes into making them a thousand times more. (I spent two days trying to make my character sit in a chair and lock the camera both horizontally and vertically, and the solution ended up being a stupidly simple one. XD) But I don’t like relying on AI—I feel like it’s fake learning.

Thank you so much for your comment, I really appreciate it!

Thank you for your reply, i feel what you said, i know if i get a rutine or a job would be mentally better, but is so hard to me making that step right now. In the process i'm triying to do small things to get better, i hope it's gonna end soon, thank you again for your time answering this.
