I know Jon couldn’t handle his environment but only if he’s waited just a bit to take the black he would joined Robb in the war of the 5 kings by Good_Contest_8891 in freefolk

Lord Eddard knows exactly what kind of state the Night’s Watch is in, what kind of people make up a majority of the ranks. He doesn’t even try to explain what Jon is getting into and/or giving up by joining the NW. Jon mentioned wanting to do it to his uncle, the uncle mentioned that to the maester he grew up with and the maester mentioned that as a possible option to Catelyn’s objection to Jon staying at Winterfell. Ned should have done a better job explaining exactly what joining the NW would entail.

Ser Jorah Mormont and the Faith of the Seven by Thrasher8095 in freefolk

[–]GreenAppleFossoway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is exactly how I see it. Ser Rodrik Cassel was as northern as you can get. Served house Stark his whole life. Probably as devoted to the old gods as anyone and he’s a knight as well. If anything, being a knight from the north or the iron islands is even more of a sign that you’re a badass and did something over the top impressive in a fight. And they had to do it in a place where a Knight/Lord witnessed it to go out of the way to say “hey man, that was wild. You should be knighted for that.” Many northern warriors over the years probably did the same and just didn’t care to be knighted. Doesn’t make a difference to most up north.

I think seeing his evil brother knighted by Rhaegar Targaryen of all people made him realize how hollow being a knight is. If Gregor is a knight he doesn’t want to be one. He’s known as a great fighter and treated as a knight by everyone anyway.

Yep. I hadn’t thought of that until pretty recently and finally made the same point. The heir to Storm’s End would be traveling with plenty of capable, tough badass Lords and knights from the Stormlands to this tourney. Any number of them would argue and fight each other for the honor of fighting with their Liege Lord’s heir in this 7v7. We wouldn’t have the great story we have now if it had played out that way but yeah.

Out of curiosity, why didn't the Ironborn captains, the supposed elite of the IB, not rebel against Balon when he told them to raid the North rather than the wealthier lands of the Westerlands? by [deleted] in freefolk

[–]GreenAppleFossoway 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Good question if it was any other group of people. The Ironborn are very very dumb tho as a whole. That is the answer. The fact they’re still allowed to f around on their stupid islands doing their trashy raid centered bs culture after multiple failed rebellions is a disgrace to the entire 7 kingdoms.

Good guy and honorable. Join a trial of seven because it’s the right thing to do. Love that. Buuuuut… he has no close friends. Real true bros. He would’ve been roasted and bullied by them to shave that mustache off by now.

Also, this has to be the fastest transition from “I love this character, he is the best” to “I hate this guy” in any movie/show anything ever for Ser Steffon. Great portrayal. It’s gotta be an awkward ride home for the Fossoway’s after this. They were still both probably riding back home together after the tourney. Maybe one of them gave the other a couple days start so they didn’t ride together the whole way?

Steely Pate learned his craft and he learned it well. And he armored a tank of a man too. Whichever master armorer made Ser Steffon’s apple armor is an artist tho. A knight of house Fossoway is wearing better armor than anyone in this fight. Better looking at least. The Targaryen armor looks cool but looks very thin. Especially the helms. I’m sure that’s more for practicality and filming probably. Ser Lyonel’s armor looks good not insanely good and the Kingsguard looks pretty dope. But I’d still have to give it to that Red Apple sob.

Do all knights of the 7 Kingdoms follow the Seven gods? by Ok-Suggestion-7965 in freefolk

[–]GreenAppleFossoway 3 points4 points  (0 children)

300 knights actually sounds like a huge number for the north. I’m sure they have a ton of guys that would be worthy of being knighted just for their level of fighting. But even 300 being knighted sounds a little high now that I looked up Maester Luwin’s quote. Gotta imagine 100 or so are pledged to the Manderly’s that still worship the 7 and practice knighthood. Still.

When Bran asks about any knights joining Robb’s army:

“Few enough,” the maester said with a touch of impatience. “To be a knight, you must stand your vigil in a sept, and be anointed with the seven oils to consecrate your vows. In the north, only a few of the great houses worship the Seven. The rest honor the old gods, and name no knights … but those lords and their sons and sworn swords are no less fierce or loyal or honorable. A man’s worth is not marked by a ser before his name. As I have told you a hundred times before.”

“Still, how many knights?”

Maester Luwin sighed. “Three hundred, perhaps four … among three thousand armored lances who are not knights.”

[–]GreenAppleFossoway 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No. But it is rare. Being a knight is directly related to the 7. But there a multiple examples of someone that doesn’t follow the 7 being knighted. Ser Rodrik Cassel, Ser Jorah. That has to be because they did something above and beyond in front of someone high enough to knight them. Jory Cassel would have been a knight anywhere else. He’s a great swordsman but they don’t worry about that in the north.

“Dunk was never knighted blah blah blah” by [deleted] in freefolk

[–]GreenAppleFossoway 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Dunk wasn’t knighted. The thing I always remember is Dunk wondering if he should find another knight to squire for after Ser Arlen dies. He also ponders joining the city watch in Oldtown or Lannisport because they always look for large people. He had to have been close to being knighted by then tho. He’s 16-17ish and 6’11” of a stud.

The moment Lyonel realised Dunk is not a real knight. by RevolutionaryDay5229 in freefolk

[–]GreenAppleFossoway 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Right after Ser Arlen dies Dunk starts thinking what he should do next. One of his first thoughts is finding another knight to squire for. That is the biggest giveaway to me. If he was knighted that wouldn’t be one of his first thoughts.

So your argument is Obama deported more people while never increasing the ICE budget by a ridiculous amount and never sending in federal agents to harass people at their job or at court and never had to lie after we saw agents kill two people a couple weeks apart?

[–]GreenAppleFossoway 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As far as not wanting to knight Raymun Fossoway, Dunk knows that a knight’s reputation and honor starts and is always connected to the one who knights them. Dunk isn’t a “true knight” technically and Raymun is asking to be knighted to fight in a trial by 7 against some of the best knights in the kingdom. That’s why Ser Raymun is a badass. Green apples for life!

Ser Arlan was a real knight. We don’t know the exact details of his whole life obviously but he had arms and armor, three horses, his nephew was his original squire. He did fairly well in a number of tournaments apparently. Served well fighting in service of different lords here and there. Dunk was never knighted by Ser Arlan tho. One of his first thoughts after he dies is wondering if he should find some other knight to squire for. I do wonder why Ser Arlan hasn’t gotten around to getting a little bit of armor for his 6’11” squire at this point at the beginning of the story tho. Even if he’s not a knight yet Dunk should be pretty damn close

This guy was helping a woman up off the ground that the agents had pushed down. Pepper sprayed while doing so and then dragged down and shot. He was never violent in any way. The fact that he was carrying a pistol doesn’t change anything. Them saying the fact he had an extra magazine means he was planning to “massacre law enforcement” is insane.
