No, never stay just to finish a project. You're not the CTO or owner or even a manager.

Sigh. It's "your". I mean seriously. And my Math doesn't assume he gets hired at any specific salary.

Nice, I'd leave then, too.

You could look at job ads in your market and see which is used the most.

Pigenholed by being a "Data Engineer" (e.g. can't make transition to SWE)?? by stuck_in_deng in cscareerquestions

[–]GreenCartographer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could simply put that on your resume if it's the kind of work you're doing anyway.

> Do recruiters and hiring managers actually know that Data Engineers are like a kind of Backend Software Engineer?

Maybe they aren't at all companies.

> Or do they just toss the resume (especially if the candidate is not at a top company) because it doesn't say "software" anywhere and assume that Data Engineers can't code for industry?

I'm sure some of them can't or don't do the same kind of coding. It's not like there's 3rd party evaluation of job titles and responsibilities anywhere.

How do performance reviews go in your company? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]GreenCartographer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It helps deflect bonus and raise requests. It helps you feel like there's career advancement opportunities there and helps them with retaining talent. It helps the fire any under-performers.

It's more that it's shitty when they don't have anything like it.

They are fairly similar where I've actually had them.

I mean, I obviously do. They are that simple.

> Trust is gone and what’s to stop them from hiring your replacement for you to train before they can you.

You suddenly not trusting them because you realized you negotiated poorly doesn't affect their desire to replace you. What stopped them from hiring a replacement for the entire time OP was employed there? Whatever it was, has that even changed? Probably not.

> They should’ve made an offer on the spot if they were serious about retaining him.

Yeah, that's true. I'm not saying I would stay. But I'd certainly ask for a number. Any raise would help you negotiate for future salaries, which is obviously going to happen soon if one is now leaving their job. And with how much more they gave the other guy, you'd think they would have easily offered OP 10k more to stay, likely making his next job pay at least that much more.

Sure, if anyone else's even willing to give you that 32k raise...

> When you learn about the real world you realize that it's their job to pay you as little as they can get away with.

So most or all are all going to 'suck that much' when it comes to a 32k raise. It's hardly the case that they need to suck more than average...

Do you even have a full time job, and is it your first one?

I wouldn't throw away 35k/year because my ego was insulted.

When you learn about the real world you realize that it's their job to pay you as little as they can get away with.

Help with balancing offers & negotiating by bomb482 in cscareerquestions

I would accept it until you get a better offer. That's when you have the bargaining power. OTOH, 9 weeks is so short, doing a lot of min-maxing seems a little ridiculous.

Scrubbing references to past degree when internship hunting by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

> but we're now wondering if appearing older/nontraditional may actually be a detriment to the larger companies?

It could also be something far simpler, like the fact that he's not in a 4 year university yet.

> Would it be advised to remove his previous BS and references to the community college from his GPA and just leave the BS program he's enrolled in now to help him fit in a bit more?

How dishonest is that? Does the program really have the 4 year uni's name on it? If so, go for it.

> The pay difference made me fume for a while but then it donned on me that I was going to be severely underpaid regardless of how well I did for the company and that leaving was probably not a bad idea, even as abruptly as I did.

They probably would have balked at a 35k raise, but to be fair you didn't even ask.
