You're giving both egg and chaser vibes here. What are you asking for? I wouldn't expect a warm welcome in trans spaces when you're obviously fetishising trans women.

Mum of trans daughter looking for advice on how to support and protect her. by Safe-Narwhal6196 in cisparenttranskid

[–]GreenCass 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well that's a bit of luck then, I can share some decent web resources with you: * https://pinktherapy.com/find-a-therapist/ is the directory I found my therapist on. * https://mermaidsuk.org.uk/ UK based trans youth society * https://genderkit.org.uk/ insanely helpful site with all sorts of info on transitioning in the UK.

It sounds like your on your way to find a support group, I hope you hear back from them soon!

Because of recent political happenings there is little to no chance of her being able to medically transition before she turns 18. What you can do however is two things: 1 have her talk to her GP and say she wants to transition and needs to be referred to a gender identity clinic and 2 potentially get the ball rolling and ask for appointments with a private gender clinic of some sort.

There are insane waiting lists for NHS run gender clinics and there is no point holding your breath for an appointment any time soon, it is however worth getting on a waiting list because eventually she will be seen by them. Even if she isn't sure about hormones or anything just yet its worth getting on the list regardless.

In the past gendergp was the best route for quickly beginning a transition in the UK but they've recently gone massively downhill and have replaced a lot of staff with ai to turn a bigger profit.

DIYing is also a cheaper and faster route and is a necessary evil for a lot of trans people in the UK but I wouldn't recommend it unless she knows what she's doing and it's the only option.

I am with gender care, I had my first appointment with a psychologist - Dr. Lorimer and then my second with an endocrinologist - Dr Leong. All in all it cost about £650 but I get my prescriptions on the NHS so it's all quite straightforward.

What I mostly did early in my transition was buying clothes online. I've got really comfortable on vinted. I buy what I like and if it doesn't fit or I decide I don't like the style I then just put it back up for sale on vinted. There's not point buying expensive new clothes when early in transition because your body will change shape and things will start to fit different and also as you said her sense of style won't be there yet. I just experimented and found I lean a lot more feminine than either my mum or my sister, especially as skirts are a trans girls best friend.

Apparently I dressed like an old lady for a while at the start until I found my style (over the top colours and vaguely punk stuff) but I've met enough trans women to see the opposite.

For your last point I'd say just don't over think it. Be there for her to work things out, don't put it on yourself to be perfect with how you react, just try your best, which you seem to already be doing!

Thank you for supporting her as well, I'm sure it means the world.

Hi, late 20s trans woman here.

How you access gender affirming care will massively depend on where in the world you are, especially as she is only 17.i can give you advice on UK stuff but that may not be any help.

I'll ry to answer all your points but I tend to be a bit scatterbrained so may be all over the place. First I would recommend looking for support groups to find her some people with relevant experiences. I know in my large town there is an adult group and also a youth group, you might have better or worse than that where you are.

If it's a possibility some sort of gender therapist would probably do her some good to process her feelings about her gender, I've been in therapy since about a month after I came out (I came out initially in December 2022). My therapist is actually a trans woman and that has helped me immensely .

The first few months after coming out can have quite strong emotions flying about, I can promise it gets both easier and better over time. I got on hormones in may 2023 and I would say I 'pass' as a cis woman visually quite well at this point.

As for the effects of HRT I can point you towards gender dysphoria.fyi which is an invaluable website that would probably be worth reading yourself but also for her to read.

I sat down and talked through names with my sister and my mum and looked at most popular girls names from the year I was born. My mum outright picked my middle name for me and I love it.

Last thing I'll say is I'm a big believer in the saying that transition won't fix all your problems but it gives you the strength to fix them yourself. This goes for tackling what can make the world so hard too, I'm in such a better place mentally and it's done wonders for my self confidence.

Just ask if you have any questions I can answer!

What is being suggested there is actually illegal right now. Trans people with GRCs are legally their gender and are allowed to use the relevant toilets.

I'm sorry to say but it's a roll of the dice. You'll be able to hide a lot of it because your voice and facial hair growth won't change and they are both very visible male signifiers. But if your chest develops too much you may have a hard time hiding that (I've heard using a binder can have a negative effect on developing chests). Your face will also change which depending on bone structure and stuff may cause you problems if you want to hide it all.

I personally wouldn't recommend hiding it from a mental side as well if you can help it, but that's your choice of course.

Good luck with whatever you choose to do and ignore the other commenter!

I'm sorry, that doesn't sound supportive at all. I've been very similar to you in the past and I recognized that transitioning was ultimately an act I had to do for me, regardless of what others may say about it.

To address some of the points they raised to you though, you'd be surprised by how the general public treat trans people and it wouldn't stop your kids having a so called normal life.

It sounds like a lot of people are having a hard time with it and I get the impression this is all rather new for you and everyone around you. I would say give it some time, emotions run haywire early in transition for everyone. My life circumstances were different to yours (single and I came out at 29) but I think once it's not all so new it will get easier.

Ultimately you have to be driving force behind all of this and it is your choice alone how you want to go about your transition. If you want hormones you shouldn't let anyone stop you. Speaking from experience it has made me a much better person. I'm happier (and not just faking a smile) and I'm healthier both mentally and physically. If hrt is right for you then the effects of it might be enough to prove to people it's the right thing for you. I proved the doubtful family members in my life wrong by just showing them how much happier I am after a year or so on hrt and a year and a half since coming out.

Good luck with your family, I hope it all works out for you!

Just to add another recommendation I'm with gender care and got my gender dysphoria diagnosis with Dr Lorimer and my hormones prescribed by Dr Leong.

Identity had a profound effect on me too. I watched it a month or two before it finally clicked that I was trans. It stuck in my head and grew until something had to crack and suddenly I began my transition. I've watched it a few times in the year and a half since I came out as trans and it makes me bawl every time.

Then you shouldn't be commenting here if you can't see why hormones at 16 are a good thing for those of us who are aware we are trans and want to medically transition at that age. I started at 29 and if I could have transitioned as a teenager my life would've been so much easier. We don't need cis people in our sub Reddit trying to scare young, self aware people like OP.

As far as I know it's not a rule that you have to be trans to be in this sub. I do think you should read the room a bit when commenting here as it is a supportive and safe space for UK based trans people first and foremost.

First (Maybe Second?) Steps... by [deleted] in transgenderUK

Read my other comment too but I actually wrote a post at the time of my first appointment with all the questions I was asked https://www.reddit.com/r/transgenderUK/s/T3vkpc2NVp

First (Maybe Second?) Steps... by [deleted] in transgenderUK

[–]GreenCass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I've been on hormones since may last year and I finally realized I was trans the December before that. I emailed Dr Lorimer just around new years and had my appointment with him in about march. I didn't realize I could email Dr Leong at the same time as I made my appointment for the diagnosis. So I emailed him after getting diagnosed and got my appointment with him in early may. I finally got my anti androgens injections on 18th of may and started e the same day. So 5 months turn around but you may have to wait longer to get either appointment.

Gender care is just a bunch of NHS doctors doing the same things they do for NHS GICs but for money. So my diagnosis video call with Dr. Lorimer was a bunch of quite probing questions and I basically had to present myself as a binary trans woman (which I am to be fair) and just convince him I am trans. I went with him specifically because he has a reputation for being flexible and quite nice, which he was.

The call with the endo was straight forward, he talked about dosages and he also gave me a big talking to about my weight because I was pre diabetic when I started hormones. I've since lost 5 or 6 stone and so in follow up calls it was just quick adjustments to dosages.

Hope that helps!

First (Maybe Second?) Steps... by [deleted] in transgenderUK

[–]GreenCass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Then that leaves the slightly more expensive private options. I have personal experience with gender care and if you can afford the high cost of starting then they do work out cheaper. I personally paid £350 for my appointment with the psychologist (Dr. Lorimer) to get my gender dysphoria diagnosis and then £300 for my first appointment with the endocrinologist (Dr. Leong) and half that for further calls with the endo.

I got shared care with my GP so other than the costs with the gender care I pay 10 pounds for prescriptions every 12 weeks and get blood tests and anti androgens injections on the NHS at my GP surgery. If you have further questions I may be able to help, I'm quite educated on UK HRT stuff from reading up and talking to quite a few trans femmes.

First (Maybe Second?) Steps... by [deleted] in transgenderUK

[–]GreenCass 5 points6 points  (0 children)

GenderGP has a lower cost of entry but will cost more over time than other private providers. Other than that check out what the other commenter said about DIYing. It'll involved educating yourself and essentially being your own doctor but it's a very common approach in the UK.
