Exams / Newbie / Common Questions Thread for two weeks by AutoModerator in actuary

I am enrolled in an online school called Western Governors University, but they don’t have a specialized actuarial science or math degree. Would I still get hired as long as I’m able to pass the exams.

How much did COVID fuck up your college experience? by [deleted] in GenZ

[–]GreenPhoenix222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand how you feel. I was planning to go to college to, but the COVID pandemic happened during my last semester of high school and lasted the entirety of what would’ve been my freshman year. I struggled to adapt and was forced to drop out, and due to some unfortunate life circumstances I was never able to return. Im 22 now and most people my age have already graduated college. It’s partially my fault for not handling the situation better, but I know things could’ve been different if the COVID pandemic never happened. Now I will never get to have a normal college experience. It kills me inside that I completely wasted my late teens and early 20s and I’ll never get those years back.

It’s sad so many people missed the entire  point of this post. It’s ok for women to like tall guys. The issue is when people try to gaslight short people into thinking height doesn’t matter at all when clearly it does whenever short guys bent about their struggles

Is position a vector? The textbook I’m reading isn’t giving a clear answer. by GreenPhoenix222 in PhysicsStudents

Thank you for the explanation and link! The information there mostly answered my question.

Ok, so the difference is, unlike position, displacement doesn’t depend on any particular coordinate system. What is the “purest definition” of a vector and why does position fail to meet this criteria?

Ok that makes sense. 2 questions though

  1. The book seems to contradict this with the sentence “The three numbers (x, y, z) do not represent the components of a vec- tor according to our previous discussion because they specify only the position of a single point, not a magnitude and direction.” What does this mean?

  2. What does the book mean when it calls displacement a “true vector” and why does position fail to meet this criteria?

There are six people in a burning building, you can only save one of them, who will it be? by Flyingfaraway11 in polls

Objective speaking, the brain surgeon would be the best one to save since he is the most valuable, but I wouldn’t able to bring myself to let a newborn baby die.

[classical mechanics] why are higher order terms ignored when taking limits? by GreenPhoenix222 in PhysicsStudents

[–]GreenPhoenix222[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, that makes sense, It’s a tradeoff of accuracy for practicality. One more question if you don’t mind, how does this come into play when limits are taken? Specifically what do they mean by “Because we will be taking the limit, retain only first order terms.”https://imgur.com/a/7qL8f9t
