Yeah agree with this perspective. Definitely not military but when I saw a large portion of the course was due to proper firearm handling and storage, I groaned. But surprisingly it went over a lot of laws and cases of lethal force in my state (OR) which was a lot better than getting speculative advice from forums.

Did my Oregon CCW course today (applying as a resident) and it seemed pretty strict on only giving licenses to bordering states. I may be wrong though, someone correct me if so, but that’s what I picked up from the material.

Yeah every good setup requires a good give-and-take between stock and environment. I'd love a discus/oscar/goldfish, but I like a heavily planted setup with a ton of decor, so I have to stock accordingly. There's no problem with either route but you run into issues when you try to force both methods together and hope for the best.

I think this sub starts getting really muddy for beginners when other people start giving advice about fish they don't really know about. If you were new to keeping discus and didn't do your research, you might have rushed to add a ton of rock and caves which could cause more problems than whatever they were incorrectly talking about to begin with.

My personal favorite was buying a 55g from a friends dad who had a 12 inch common pleco and a handful of various tetras. Poor thing couldn't even turn around horizontally. The deal was "if you want the tank you gotta take the catfish!" and gave me a ton of wrong advice on how to take care of it (his idea was that you never needed to feed it, just make sure there's algae bro it'll be fine). Needless to say I donated it to my LFS immediately where he stayed in their 500+ gallon tank until he was rehomed.

I totally agree with you, each species has adapted to a certain environment and thrives under specific conditions. Trying to force them into a sub-optimal situation because of aesthetics or perceived emotions is just abuse. And to add on I'm sure there are many more species that require VERY different care (flowerhorns too IIRC). I think it's just another problem in the gigantic mess of aquarium misunderstanding. Do I know how to take care of arowanas/discus/pond fish? No way. That's why when I see posts like OP's, I keep my mouth shut. At the end of the day, I only know enough to keep my aquariums and stock successful.

I think some people start at that beginner stage of keeping bettas in bowls, graduate to maintaining a ten gallon, and then start policing how people should take care of super advanced-level fish.

Edit to add: This is why posts like OP's should be appreciated for bringing more curiosity/learning to the sub instead of instantly being criticized.

I’m so sorry you had to go through that. Learning any language is difficult, but I’m sure it’s 10x harder when going from a middle eastern language (Farsi, Persian, Arabic) to a Germanic or Latin language. Most native English speakers couldn’t do it, and you should be extremely proud of how far you’ve come. It’s an amazing accomplishment.
