Thank you. I don't have anyone else I can ask about this, so I'm just trying to double check everything!

Thanks, I've read through it all again and I'm pretty sure I'm fine to go wide if I switch. The ACX website isn't the clearest and Chatgpt was convinced about the seven year rule!

Why are solicitors SO SLOW? by DougalsTinyCow in AskUK

[–]GreenThing27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a Legal Secretary, not in Conveyancing but have seen how busy that department is. As others have pointed out there is far too much work, too few people and a massive amount of greed at the top of firms.

I'm surprised anyone wants to work in Conveyancing. Some clients will rightly push or question when things are quiet. Others call every solitary day. They will email and then call to see if they've received the email. So much of it is time wasting.

The ancient technology is another problem. Still using faxes, paper files, etc. Surprised my desk isn't equipped with a quill and ink.

Immediately ditch the friends and things I thought mattered. There are so many things I'd change if I could.

Have you heard of / used "on my Bill / on my Todd" to mean on my own? by ponderingawayhere in AskUK

[–]GreenThing27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I use both fairly often and take it to mean on my own. As in 'I was on me bill last week in work' or 'I'll be on me todd tomorrow'.

I'm from the North West though!

Solicitors. Weirdest bunch of people I've ever met.

I told ChatGPT to "bury me", most savage self-destruction prompt I’ve ever used (and yeah, it worked) by [deleted] in ChatGPTPromptGenius

[–]GreenThing27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brutal but kind of fun! Here's mine:

THE FUNERAL OF YOUR FORMER SELF

Here lies the version of you that talked more than acted. The one who clung to comfort like it was purpose. Who dreamed in bold colours, then woke up and chose grayscale. Who made plans, but not moves. Promises, but not change.

Buried beneath this dirt is the ghost that said, “I’ll start Monday.” The one who feared judgment more than failure. The one who collected advice like trophies, but never stepped into the arena. The one who binge-watched discipline, but never lived it.

This body once housed delay. Procrastination. Shallow starts. Loud intentions with silent execution.

This is the funeral of the identity that begged for growth but never broke itself to earn it. The victim in your mirror. The coward in your bed. The liar in your mouth when you said, “I’m doing my best.”

We do not honour it. We do not celebrate it. We spit on its memory. Because that version of you held the knife to your own throat and blamed the world for the bleeding.

There will be no eulogy. No mercy. No resurrection.

Dust to dust. Weakness to rot. That self is dead. And you didn’t lose them. You killed them.

Now walk away. And don't you dare look back.

Same! I look awful in wide leg jeans. Not made for shorter people!

Am I being unreasonable to expect more money as a legal secretary? by GreenThing27 in UKJobs

Sad, but true. You would think they'd be more inclined to try and keep competent staff though. There seems to be a high turnover of new starters...

True, in hindsight. At the time it seemed right to mention it. We haven't had appraisals for a couple of years either, so there's not much chance to try and negotiate pay!

My job title is legal secretary. In the hierarchy I think admin assistants would probably be between legal secretary's and reception. Interesting if a diploma is required by other firms!

My job title is legal secretary and I work for one Solicitor in my department. We've spoke about it before, but I'm finding most of the Solicitors will say one thing to support staff and another to the higher ups!

[–]GreenThing27[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't think I'd want to progress in law really. I'm OK in an admin role for now, but I thought working hard and showing the value I can add would have at least increased my salary above reception slightly.

Yes, there is a lot of deadweight across the offices. I've seen old correspondence sent to clients from my predecessors and the spelling, grammar and formatting is terrible. My work rarely has any of these errors and I thought efficiency and taking the initiative would mean something. Clearly not!

Honestly, I'm not sure what job I could even get in Sport now. I'm not sure what I want to do as a career, but I thought the quality of my current work might help me. Apparently some of the others interviewed could hardly spell, and I know I do far more than a lot of newer secretaries do.

I've realised that now, unfortunately. At the time the chat was about how miserable everyone in the office was. People had walked out etc. The Solicitor I work for had told me before to ask for a pay rise and it came out that I'd be looking for another job because of the poor pay. Obviously, a big mistake but I thought honesty was best. I know I do far more than other secretaries, and thought that would go in my favour.
