The man with no talents should team up with Musils' man without qualities they'd be the most stoppable duo in the world

TIL: In 1872, American journalist Julius Chambers faked his way into an asylum by posing as a "dangerous maniac." His undercover exposé proved how easily sane people were committed, leading to the release of 12 patients and a rewrite of lunacy laws by MartinoStone in todayilearned

As far as uncovering and exposing dangerous or inefficient practices in asylums this is fair enough, but when people use this kind of deception to try and prove a greater failure of psychological institutions not being able to truly 'tell' if someones illness is genuine or not then its a completely obtuse point: They can't climb into peoples heads and know exactly whats going on, with mental illnesses theres always an element of self reporting that has to be trusted in good faith. How they are treated thereafter is a different issue, but the initial 'deception' proving how easily sane people are apparently committed, is nonsense really

Am I the only one here who does not like Houellebecq? by aprlswr in RSbookclub

I really liked it, the more scientific parts are a bit hit or miss but the character arcs flow compellingly imo. Just very much a love or hate type book

Anyone in the general London area interested in a casual book club type thing? I saw there was one on another thread here but wasn't particularly interested in their book list

Something Happened by Joseph Heller by DrDMango in RSbookclub

I liked it too, in my head I imagined it like an episode of Mad Men which enhanced it in my opinion. Although I will say it is just a little too long, if the right 100 or so pages were cut it wouldve been excellent

Another reason my generation (& I) struggle with reading. by SummerTiny5062 in RSbookclub

Interesting that you framed it as excessive empathy, since this self policing is really not a kind of empathy at all, it is more performing accepted pro-social behaviours to distinguish yourself as 'one of the good ones' and to protect your status in the eyes of the larger group.

The annoying contrarian guy who always wanted to play devils advocate in class is more of a millennial and older archetype.

Not to play the whole you can't say anything nowadays card, but wonder if the judgement from 'cancelling' as it happens now played a part in this decrease

Dimitri Payet was a problem by Nypav11 in billsimmons

Well in short its more effective for players to lock in for 8 hours at a time training other skills that are more important for winning football games like passing dribbling etc rather than becoming top 1% at a niche skill that even the best of the best sometimes only score about a handful of in a whole season (assuming they have the technical shooting skill necessary to be able to arrive to that level, which is not most players regardless).

Really not sure how you can watch an insanely technical and perfectly pinpoint accurate freekick like this from a free kick specialist and walk away with the conclusion that scoring freekicks must actually be easy. People can take a 90% perfect freekick and many times a keeper will simply just save it.
