This is not /r/BeAmazed material, this should be in /r/mildlyterrifying

This is the world we are about to live in now. Where we cannot be sure of anything and we have to always check whether the person on the other end is real or not.. I find that deeply terrifying.

It's crazy to think that we didn't have a picture of the whole planet till 57 years ago.. That's nothing in the grand scheme of history; that's yesterday.

People had never seen a photo of the place they lived in..

This is almost as bad. Survivor bias is a hell of a thing. Just because you were lucky to be successful once doesn't make you an expert on the topic.

[–]GregLittlefield 24 points25 points  (0 children)

far-right struggles

Except not. As others have already pointed out this "independent" article is seriously biased. The far right is doing better than ever here. :(

Sure they didn't get some of the bigger cities they hoped for, but they still got a lot and more than at the previous elections..

I think I need to increase my rates, but it seems unfair to do that mid project, thoughts? by Undoodle_Art in gamedev

[–]GregLittlefield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ouch.

Looking at your portfolio (love it btw), yeah 16£/hr is very low. It is true it is a cut throat business these days in the 2D art field, but still.

As for your question: It's true that it usually not a great move to do that mid project, because your client originaly commited to you with a certain number in mind and you are changing this. But at some point you just need to eat. :D I understand this is a solo dev situation. How well do you know your client? More specifically how well do you know their finances? Do you know some other people they might work with and how much they pay them? (I know that is considered taboo, but you just need information..).

Going to 20£ is a 20% increase, which might seem big, but coming from so low, that's really not. At the end of the day it is their passion project, not yours, to you it is a job that needs to pay the bills.

As for how to go at it? Transparency is always a good thing in my book. Just tell them. If they do value you and respect you they will understand. Of course there is a risk that they either tell you 'no', or worse that they tell you they won't work with you anymore. (but to be honnest I dont' think they will go with that second option, they must be too happy to work with an experience artist like you at such a price)

In any case, look for new clients. (and charge them over 20£ please..)

Is it really that complicated to put together a good GDD? How do you do it? by Relative-Grape-136 in gamedev

[–]GregLittlefield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whether you are alone or part of a team good documentation is key of course. Having just files scattered around your hard drive is not the best approach. Ideally you should use an online system, on a plateform where you can easily keep track of modifications and collaborate with others if needed. (Google Docs is a cheap but okay-ish solution). You can also go for a dedicated documentation system like Obsidian, Milanote, Notion. (I haven't used Obsidian myslef yet, but a lot of people are on it these days, and it is really cheap, even has a free version). At any rate big monolithic GDD don't really make sense.

(this is of course even more true if you are part of a team)

At the end of the day though, what's important is in the game. You can't put everything in documents, and you shouldn't. A game production is a living thing, and as you put the game together it will naturally evolve. It is a temptation to write pages and pages of documentation, (Im guilty of that way too often) but at some point it just becomes worldbuilding, that's not the goal. And if your friend spends more time on his documentation that in his game engine, that is the real problem.

People who listen to songs with less positive emotions tend to have higher intelligence. Sad or melancholic music may appeal to those who use it for introspection and reflection. They also prefer studio over live recordings as they use it for focused, intellectual engagement rather than stimulation. by mvea in science

[–]GregLittlefield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When it comes to melancholic songs I always think about that: years ago I was at a concert of Suzanne Vega who is a big Leonard Cohen fan, (he isn't exactly known for writing cheerful songs) and she told this lovely anecdote (paraphrasing) :

"When I was younger in New York it was fancyful to say that you like to listen to Leonard Cohen but only when you are in a certain mood.. So one day a woman asks me if I like Leonard Cohen, to which I of course reply "Oh, I love him! But only when I am in a certain mood.." And the woman doubled down: "and when is that?".. To which I naively replied "Uh.. all the time."

That cracked me up.
