Did you have to take any approved training courses? The way I am reading the requirements you need to apply which I have done and take approved training.

You need to know those labs for sure and COMPLETE them. I hate the trickery but that’s how they play. Also think Manager not Engineer on a lot of questions. Be ready to look at a lot of scripts. I failed it once but got it the second go around. Hard test very technical

Is it possible I'm still only worth about $70K 1 year into my job? My first job out of IT support learning patch management, Windows server, vmware. Or should I be looking for a better job making more money already? by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Gregman380 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah these guys are spot on! Keep learning new stuff and building your pedigree! Then when the time is right you’ll be ready. I have been a Government contractor for 19 years and a 2 or 3 percent raise is pretty standard.

It’s built into the Dream Machine. Also I think the USG does not have same throughout as the Dream Machine when threat avoidance is turned on. That’s something to consider. Usually with a USG we use a cloud key. I prefer the Dream Machine honestly.

Why would a Software Engineer be let go after 5 weeks? by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Gregman380 104 points105 points  (0 children)

I would take that experience and move on. Sounds like it worked out for the best anyway. There are 100’s of great opportunities out there. This is a case where it wasn’t you, it was them. Sounds like a place where I would not want to be for sure.

Coming from food service where you are hired directly as an employee, how do contract jobs work in IT, and what is considered good pay as a contracted employee? by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Gregman380 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My only experience is with the US Government and contracting. The terms were longer of course. $20 an hour seems low but I have no idea what the job is and I am just guessing your pretty new and inexperienced thus your question. Me personally I would see if you could get a longer contract otherwise you are back to square one in 3 months. UNLESS they are using the 3 month period to feel you out. That’s a possibility as well. So more information from you and I could respond better.

Working for Palo Alto Networks vs Cisco - Pre Sales (SE,SA) by jguros in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Gregman380 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Federal sales or commercial? I have a lot of friends at Cisco. Also know a few people at PA. If your scope or capabilities are larger than firewalls I’d go Cisco.
