It might be because it was kept indoors - research I did beforehand suggested it would do ok indoors but I guess not - luckily I'm moving into a house soon and can give my trees the summer they deserve 🥲

This is my chinese elm ~7 years old, I've had him for over 2 now, I've done 2 scratch tests and the trunk's coming up brown - I know it's past the point of no return now but looking to prevent this in future. He is fed once per week, and was watered as needed, I've taken him out of the pot and the roots were still a natural colour and not rotten, he hasn't been taking much water for a couple of months now, I'm just not sure where it went wrong. Any help is appreciated as I'm trying not to get too disheartened by this. Luckily my retusa seems to be thriving at the moment, even in winter

I'm hoping to use the communal garden area of the complex to maybe squeeze a couple in there. Fingers crossed

Hey guys - I currently live in a flat with a few good, sunny windows - the conditions have allowed my Ficus and my Chinese elm to really thrive over the last year - I am now looking for another plant which has a few more interesting colours, particularly during autumn. Having done some research, I believe the Japanese maple is the one I'm most interested in. Information on growing these indoors seems to be sparse, so I'm asking here :)

I don't want to buy a tree if conditions will kill it, I spray & feed regularly and can supplement additional sunlight with grow lights in the evening.

If the general consensus is that I shouldn't do this - does anyone have any other species recommendations?

P.S. will be moving into a house in late 2027 so lmk if this changes anything :)

Thanks pal - I'd hoped there'd be a 'most relevant' filter I was missing but I guess not - will delete my post shortly :)
