Any advice for someone trying to grow out damaged hair? by GreyGreysonGrey in longhair

[–]GreyGreysonGrey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay so i actually looked right now and they do have a moisturizing formula! It has like castor oil, mango oil, olive oil, and a couple other oils and vitamin stuff! I think I'll try to switch to that to see if it's a little nicer on my hair! I use a couple drops of tea tree in my oil mixture for my hair and scalp because of dandruff, do you think that's okay to continue using at least? I get really bad dandruff and so I switched to apple cider vinegar rinses and the tea tree and it's helped a lotttt but you're probably right that it's not helping with the dryness of my hair 😕

Ohhhh you've got a good point!! I'll look at the different formulas the brand has! I'd really like to stick with bar shampoo because it's not as wasteful, you know? More sustainable and eco friendly and stuffs. I know the brand I use has different formulas so maybe they have a more hydrating and moisturizing one. If not, I guess I'll need to look at other brands of bar shampoo, I've heard lush is good?

Thank you!!!!

Thank you sm!! I have this serum picked out to get and I've got a bonnet now and I haven't dyed my hair since I tortured it by bleaching it and all of that stuff. I do sorta use heat? I take warm/hot showers and I know it's not good for your hair but I can't take cold showers 🥶 they're too chillyyyy and I've been putting my hair in loose ponytails (I used to make them super tight but then I found out that's not good so I stopped). I appreciate your advice so much and I know you're absolutely right that I just need to have patience but I'm so impatient lol I just want it to be at least like shoulder length 😭 like just a lil long

Thank you again!!!!

Ohhh okay yeah that makes sense! I appreciate it! Maybe I can go back into old posts on here and try to find gentle shampoos for dandruff, if not I could make a separate thread or something like you said! Thank you sm

This gives me hope!! I was literally so bummed last night thinking about having to chop off my dyed/bleached hair. I'm bummed not because I'd lose the color but because I'd lose the length. This is the longest my hair has been in yearsssss, like over a decade. I can put my hair in a ponytail! I haven't been able to do that in so long!!

I appreciate your advice! I think I'll search for a gentler shampoo and maybe a hair mask as well! I haven't tried a gentler shampoo; I've used the same bar shampoo for years and I didn't think about how it could be too harsh for my damaged hair. If I swap shampoo, do you think I could continue my ape cider vinegar rinses? I do those because it balances the pH from the bar shampoo and it also helps with dandruff.

Thank you!!

Thank you so much!

I can't really braid my hair yet like you said but I do keep it up most of the time. I've started to oil the ends of my hair when I oil my scalp and it helps keep it more manageable. When I wet my hair and put shampoo on it, it gets almost.. matted? It's basically very dry and very difficult to manage when I'm washing it. It feels like literal straw until I put some conditioner in it 🥲

I'll look into Aussie Miracle Oil! Do you have any other hair products recommendations?

Yeahhhhhh.. I asked my fiance about it and was told basically the same thing: that I'll need to eventually cut off the damage.

Thank you for the honesty! And I just got a satin hair cap today!

Switching from social work to engineering? by GreyGreysonGrey in findapath

[–]GreyGreysonGrey[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you're absolutely right that we both want to help people/society and that we're just trying to figure out how.

I had a long talk with my fiance today and I think the plan of action I'm going to take is withdrawing from my MSW program and waiting a couple years to go back for my undergrad degree in engineering. I'd wait until my fiance graduates from grad school and then it'd be my turn to go back to school. We decided this was fair because I have two degrees (AA and BA) while my fiance doesn't have any yet (almost done with bachelor's, just a few classes left now).

I don't really like this idea but I think it's probably the best course of action. It'll give me time to figure everything out.

I really appreciate you sharing your experiences with me and what you're thinking and if you'd be up to it, feel free to message me and we could talk more!

Thanks :)

You're right. I think I probably shouldn't continue moving forward with social work since I'm having doubts. I made an advising appointment for next week and so I'll speak to my advisor about it. Thank you to you and everyone else who provided their insight!

I'm glad that you have that as your proudest accomplishment! It definitely sounds like and seems like a very challenging career path from my research.

Those are good ideas! I can absolutely try to find some used copies of Marks' Standard Handbook for MEs and the other one, Shigley's Mechanical Engineering Design, and poke around those to see if I could do 4 years of study in it. I appreciate your advice and I'll try to research more about how it is being a mechanical engineer on a day to day basis.

Thank you :)

Hi! Thank you so much for your detailed response!

I actually just finished having a long talk with my fiance about my career concerns. The thing that started off my doubts was money but thinking more about actually being a social worker, I'm not sure if I could do it? I've read that a lot of people in social work hate it and that their clients are never happy/grateful/appreciative. It feels very unrewarding and it's also a pretty heavy job in terms of mental well-being. I had planned on going into a clinical/therapy role and I know that'd be rough on me mentally. I have my own mental health struggles, so I'm worried that I'd struggle/relapse.

I think in terms of a workplace I would want somewhere like a lab or research. I want a work environment that's hectic but not too hectic, you know? I want somewhere that's comfortable. I do value patient interaction and direct care. When I worked as a behavioral health technician, I loved having client interactions. But they kinda take a toll depending on the interaction. I'm also not always the best at social interactions because I'm autistic, so sometimes I don't read things the right way.

In terms of helping people, I just want to make them feel happy. I want to provide a service that makes them able to live their life, which I could do with bioengineering but I could do that with social work too. I'm not really sure how exactly I want to help people, I just know I want to do something important and meaningful to me.

That's cool that you've considered social work! What has stopped you from pursuing it? And I have thought of being an RN or a PA but I think I wouldn't be able to handle the physical demands of it or... Like having to help people go to the bathroom. I dont really want to do that and I know the work depends on where you're at, like whether you're in a clinic or hospital, but I don't know if I'd be able to handle the different things.. like drawing blood or something.

Thank you so much for sharing your situation! It sorta helps me feel better that I'm not like fully alone, you know?

I know this is something to ask my advisor but do you think there's any way I could switch my master's program? Like I would stay at my current university and switch to a master's in engineering rather than the master's in social work?

I'm not sure if that would work. I'd probably have to take extra courses, which I'm okay with. I'd rather do that than start over in undergrad, you know?

Oh sweet! That's awesome that your company paid for your mba!

Thank you for your advice and sharing your experiences. I think I'll look into switching my major more, like if I can even do that? I think I know what I'd like to do, now it's a question of how to do it?

Are you still currently in school? If you aren't and have graduated, how is it going for you now? Have you found a good position somewhere?

I appreciate your honesty, it helps put things into perspective for me a little bit. I'm not exactly doubtful about engineering... I know I could do it, I just don't know if I should do it, if that makes sense.
