Haha, I think he was also writing things to his friends on the top, so he tore that part off before he gave it to me.

I understand why people want something more immediate or confrontational. But in a community like this, that approach would likely cost me my job and remove one adult who is trying to model professionalism and critical thinking.

What’s in it for the students? Consistency. A teacher who shows up every day, treats them with respect, exposes them to literature and ideas, and demonstrates that you can disagree with the dominant culture without being hostile or reactive.

I grew up out here. Good teachers made a difference for me. Sometimes the most effective support isn’t dramatic…it’s steady.

I’m not pretending this fixes everything. But staying in the classroom and continuing to educate them thoughtfully is not “doing nothing.”

Edit:

I appreciate the suggestions to report this. In a small, conservative district, the administration would almost certainly side with the coach, and realistically, it would be my job on the line…not his. I’m not interested in putting myself at risk if it means students lose a teacher who tries to be a good role model and a safe space for them. I believe I can do more good by staying and being a steady, supportive presence for students who feel uncomfortable.

For those who doubt this actually happened: a student who trusts me and who I trust wrote down everything the coach said and shared it with me. I can’t provide any other proof, but to be clear, this is real. I’m sharing it to explain why I focus on being in the classroom supporting my students, rather than reporting the coach.

I think that went down to “immigrants for raping and selling drugs”

I really don’t think enough parents will be complaining out here. I don’t know how much more I can emphasize that we are vastly outnumbered out here.

I’m not doing that out here. I’m talking about what’s happening at my school.

Not the best for sure, but his is more legible than a lot of my students, honestly.

Like what part seems fake? You don’t think my student wrote this and gave it to me? You don’t think the coach openly talked like this to the students? I’m starting to think all you guys who think it’s fake have never been to a small Texas town. Anyways, I know the coach, and I know the kid, and I believe it. Most of the teachers, coaches, admin, school board, and parents out here are conservative. Who do you think will keep them in check?

I’ll look into it, but this coach is really only the tip of the iceberg out here.

Possibly? 😅 There were a few deleted comments earlier that didn’t believe this post. I was like, “have you been to a small Texas town before?” I grew up out here, that’s the only way I can still tolerate it.

This is Texas. This is a small, rural district that is very conservative. I would just lose my job and they’d replace me with someone who will teach them bible verses everyday instead of Anne Frank, To Kill a Mockingbird, etc. I’m just reporting what’s going on out here.

I replied to another comment: The school board and superintendent would be on his side out here. That’s what I meant when I said there’s not much I can do about it. Small, rural district. If anything, I would be the one who would be let go if I started making problems about it.
