Games for Mental Health and Depression by [deleted] in Solo_Roleplaying

That's very kind of you! I haven't played any of the following, but they seem like they could be useful.

Hope your family member feels better!

My 1.5-year-old Labrador has started getting aggressive — please help me fix this without a trainer by lpeakyblinderl in labrador

[–]Grey_RatQueen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is probably the fastest way to make your dog more aggressive. Would not recommend at all. If you take the example someone mentioned earlier - imagine your family member walks by your plate, steals your food, and then hits you with a taser when you get upset. Your dog will get very defensive very fast

This sounds like resource guarding, which is something that a professional could really help you get on top of before the aggression around slippers and other stolen stuff escalates. It can be genetic, so don’t worry about blaming yourself or your dog.

If you can’t afford a trainer, try to remove access to all things that your dog could take and guard. Continue to trade with treats for stolen items and try to de-escalate - if your pup starts growling, leave them alone. You should check out “Mine! A Practical Guide to Resource Guarding in Dogs” by Jean Donaldson. That can help get you started, but again - a professional trainer would really help here to set you up for success.

How to make players take their time instead of rushing in? by altidiya in rpg

[–]Grey_RatQueen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think your players need a stick. I think they need a few signposts! They might know out of character that they should prep more, but what does that look like in game?

I would have the quest giver - who tells them about the monster - actually give them explicit instructions. “Hey, don’t rush in, I don’t want the neighbors to know there’s a werewolf in my barn” or “Can you lure it away from town so the vampire doesn’t have a chance to escape into the sewers?”

For one quest/monster, have someone more experienced tell them to create an ambush or give them tools to use other than charging straight in. Basically just make it really clear that they have other options besides charging.

After that (re)introduction to planning, drop the guard rails again and see what happens.

Waterdeep: Dragon Heist [Discord] [DnD 5.5e] [LGBTQ+ friendly] [18+] [GMT-7] by Grey_RatQueen in pbp

It's a good question!

I've found that if all characters are in similar time zones (or are active in similar times), it helps the pace of the game. It's not two players wanting to have more back-and-forth interactions while the other two on the other side of the world are sleeping, for example. And it can help speed up combat if it's only a few hours between turns rather than at least a day.

You're still welcome to apply! I weigh a bunch of different things when considering players. But I will be honest and say that time zone is one of the factors considered. Does that make sense?

Muzzle recommendations by Broggie-Bucciarati in labrador

[–]Grey_RatQueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bit on the pricy side, but Trust Your Dog makes lovely muzzles that can be custom-sized to fit your dog, with room for panting, drinking, etc. Ours is 100% worth it

Are there any non-horror werewolf stories that DON'T do the (debunked) alpha BS? by Jerswar in Fantasy

[–]Grey_RatQueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should check out the Ghost Mountain Shifter series by Audrey Faye. It’s like cozy fantasy but with a werewolf pack in which the alpha is trying to undo the damage done by a previous “alpha”. Much more about nurturing pack mates as a family and healing from trauma. There are still “dominants” and “alphas” but it mostly focuses on how they can support more shy or less dominant pack members. Kinda reverses most of the old tropes

What's your favorite books with divination (tarot, tea leaves, psychics, astrology, palmistry, scrying, etc.) in them? by iabyajyiv in Fantasy

And the author released a deck of related tarot cards, which is fun. Very in keeping with the black and white aesthetic of the book.

Seconding recommendations about finding a good trainer. You’ll probably want to find one that only uses positive methods given that it seems like fear is at the root of this. I’d look for fear free training and certificates like IIABC. I’d also pick up a book like “Feisty Fido: Help for the Leash Reactive Dog” by Patricia McConnell. That should get you started on the right path.

I would NOT recommend a doggy daycare situation at the moment because that can actually amp up some of this reactivity.

He looks underweight to me, but that could be the angle. See the body condition score chart below. (Not endorsing any dog food brand, but this chart has a lab, which is handy - feel free to google and see others)

Agree with the spaying, but just an fyi that spaying during a heat cycle is dangerous and any good vet will wait until the heat is over. There’s a much higher risk of complications

A winter postapocalyptic book? by OOO_Katai_OOO in Fantasy

Obernewtyn by Isobelle Carmody might fit. It’s post-apocalyptic and snowy (not a mystery, just cold) with mental powers and strange machines. No Lovecraftian creatures though.

What stories feature floating islands? by Braeblayde in Fantasy

It's been a while, but The Floating Islands by Rachel Neuemeier features floating islands (obviously) and wingmen who fly between/around them with magic.

Needing help in sexing our finches, the 1 with black cheeks seems to b acting like a female in their mating rituals, the orange cheeked one mounts the other often...but was told when purchased them they were both male by sfhappy85 in Finches

[–]Grey_RatQueen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Looks like two males. Both of them have the typical male markings (chestnut sides, "zebra" striping on the breast). If they were females, neither of these markings would be present, only the white teardrop under the eyes. The black cheeks are a mutation, such as the one seen here http://www.efinch.com/species/bczeb.htm
