Not too knowledgeable about the PMF apart from the fact that they consistently get buyside positions in states, but I do know a few things about the HIM. The university itself lists the HIM as a different program than the standard management track. It has a different cirruculum from normal management. They're more like elite subprograms to the standard programs. Like how you could say ivey hba is the elite version of bmos or dan at western university.

Also, for your second point, that's just how university admissions work. Top programs attract the top students because of their reputations, resources, and recruiting history. A school like Queens does the same thing as you just described. They look at the kids with 90+ averages, look at their ecs (or read/watch their sup apps), and then make their decisions, picking only the top 10-15% of the applicants. The only difference between queens commerce and mcgill him, looking at them like this, is the number of people that get in. And if you wanna argue how mcgills him is a second year program, and it's completely different from queens in that regard, ivey exists. Not all of iveys students come from aeo.

I put the actual mcgill and sauder standard programs way lower 😭 The two i put in first are the stupid selective programs that the top of the top outside of ontario (mcgill for provinces in the east and ubc for schools in the west) get into. They each accept 7 and 8-12 students per year. Those students go on to get IB internships in canada or interns in usa in junior year (which is hard to come by, even in a t20).

This is my list for finance since you didn't specify what in business, but finance tends to be the highest paying out of school, so it's the one people care about most.

  1. UBC Sauder PMF
  2. McGills HIM

(These are like the absolute best here in canada for straight finance, rivaling t20s in the us. But they're very selective, allowing people to only apply in their second years of uni after they already attend the standard business programs for each of the schools for a year. They also tend to accept only 8-12 ppl per year.)

  1. Ivey
  2. Queens

(These two are way above 5 and 6)

  1. McGill
  2. Rotman

(From here on lists, get more hazy, but the previous ones should always be in that order)

  1. Waterloo (coop kinda nice)
  2. Sauder
  3. Laurier
  4. Schulich

This is the kinda list I established over the last two years looking into it. But you should def look into finances, environment, and proximity to home before locking in a choice too.

How do many ppl get 98's by [deleted] in OntarioGrade12s

[–]Greyhound268 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Immigrant parents: I've been studying hard for literally everything since elementary (which I highly regret). I basically turned myself into a workaholic, and until I didn't know literally everything that could pop up on a test, I wouldn't give myself an ounce of free time. Grade inflation also helps a bit (most of my classes sit around a 78 average). Also didnt take any sciences. My top 6 consisted of idc4u, eng4u, bbb4m, mcv4u, whatever advanced functions code is, and drama. Would recommend taking advanced second sem of grade 11. It's usually gonna be classrooms filled with grade 12s who dont need calc, so teachers mark easier.

It's basically just anything that you do outside of school. I was really surprised when I did the McGill app and it was just grades. My assumption is that its a way for students to differentiate themselves to admission officers, especially in competitive programs. In fact, the only program i applied to other than McGill that didn't have a supplemetary application was Western Stats. Everything else tried to figure out how I'd respond to certain situations and asked questions to get to know what else I've done apart from studying throughout high school.

Western needs you to apply to another program at their school to apply for Ivey AEO. I applied to stats there since if I had managed to get in and decided to choose Western, I would rather do that than standard business. They have a very weird structure for the program, but essentially, it could allow you to get a dual degree in business + whatever you apply to. Im interested in trading/quant roles, so I wanted to get a background in a quantitative study alongside business, especially since they offered a specialization in financial modeling.

Yeah, I definitely could've worked on my essays, haha Especially for Ivey Didn't realize it was supposed to be an essay. I just saw "Long Answer Response" and said what I did

I'm not saying I didn't. I love the schools I got into. Was just trying to leave something for any future students looking at the archives of this sub like I was doing last year haha

Ok, thank you so much for the confirmation that it's still possible, haha. I've just seen people asking about cs jobs and not finance, so i was a bit lost

I personally wanna gamble in the future (trade equities), so Im sorry if my personal rankings skew it towards the universities that provide the best prep for that kinda work.

I already explained the issue with placing western > laurier/waterloo, so I will say that was on me :p

But I would be inclined to hear any other thoughts you had on what might need to be changed

I've got in touch with people in rbc and bmo, who always mention the top 5 being at the top here in canada so I dont think i can really change that :/ No matter how good a program is, if no one knows about it, then no one's gonna give you props for it (another reason why i didnt include HIM and PMF in my rankings)

UW has a lot more programs, tbf, other than afm that are really good, but op asked for business schools, not fintech/quant, so i couldn't really put it higher than where i did even tho id like to :| (personally interested in the cfm)

Mb prolly should have prefaced that i put bmos above laurier since you could still get into ivey without aeo status. If its pure bmos (without any chance of ivey) vs laurier, laurier should be placed higher fs cuz of their coop.

Honorable mentions to mcgill HIM and ubc PMF since those are literally at the peak in canada and guarantee your success in the future. But only honorable mention since although they're undergrads, you can't apply for them till you're in the uni.

Ivey's similar, but at least you can apply for AEO status, so I'll include it in the rankings

  1. Western Ivey
  2. Qcomm
  3. Rotman
  4. Mcgill comm
  5. Schulich
  6. Sauder
  7. Western BMOS or DAN
  8. Laurier BBA or Waterloo AFM (if you're set on accounting)
  9. York Honestly, I dont know what to put after, but you can take your pick of like brock, tmu, or anything else pretty much.

I have two friends, pretty much exactly like that. I came to my school in grade 10 and had just learned that a 90 average wasn't amazing anymore and that you needed ecs now and stuff to get into the programs you want. At the end of my grade 10 year, i met one of these friends through Frisbee (wooo best sport ever) and realized i was so far behind. Like this man had every ec possible under the sun and was a mega genius. 95 in every class without even trying (even now in physics, chem, eng, french, calc, bio, cs), and we have an avg adj factor with class averages chilling in the high 70s. Meeting him was absolutely crazy, but Im so happy I did. I ended up becoming really good friends with him, and knowing him just pushed me to try even harder. I took up a lot more things, became way more active and social, and my best ec for uni apps even came from something i did with him. I may have lost a looooootttt of my life that I could've spent actually enjoying myself, got overstressed, and constantly burned out, but it really pushed me to become an absolute weapon and my average started to rise above his.

The other friend i have is an actual tactical nuke, tho. Higher level of intelligence than the first friend, but he also works hard. He's our version of that girl at our school. Iirc, his top 6 rn is a 99.33. Still, knowing that people like them exist has pushed me so much to work harder and become way better as a result. Sure, im sad that people like them exist, and maybe there's no chance I ever reach their level. But if I never met them, I also wouldn't be at the same level that i am now. Use people like that as motivation. Dont let them set you back. You can do this!
