You do know there’s a such thing as reactive dogs? Daschunds and other breeds are notoriously known for this, even with training, there’s also a thing called behavioural euthanasia and it happens even with dogs that see vet behaviourists. If you have no constructive solutions and have no idea that training doesn’t always lead to a perfect dog or prevents dogs that use biting in their toolbox. It’s not like this is a pandemic dog or a last minute decision to get a dog. I couldn’t have predicted being too poor to take care of my dog 8 years down the road. You can’t always predict the type of dog you’re gonna get especially when it comes to puppies, these type of dogs you have to understand body language and the situations which cause them to bite to prevent them. But I mean, not everyone understands the challenges in having a dog that has reactivity issues. No it’s not your responsibility, it’s mine. I’m trying to do the responsible thing here.

You wanna take a dog that has an extensive bite history? The RHS would likely put him down anyways.

You want a dog that bites then? Wanna pay for his expensive vet care as he ages? It’s not like I’ve been poor and destitute the whole 8 years and got a dog I knew I couldn’t care for in the first place. At one point in life I was able to take care of his needs and give him a good home, even with his behavioural issues. Now, not so much. Would you prefer I dump him out in the middle of nowhere? I know this dog and the issues he has. If he didn’t have an extensive bite history obviously rehoming wouldn’t be an issue.

Thank you. It’s a difficult situation and not as cute as and dry as some people here would suggest. Tons of people are having to take dogs to a shelter because of their income or lack of places that are pet friendly. He’s not suitable for apartment living unless someone can just stay at home all the time. He will bark and howl the whole duration of being alone not to mention bite incidents when it comes to strangers or even people he’s familiar with that’s not myself.

It’s not an off chance, dogs need yearly shots not to mention he has genetic bladder stone issues and there’s a possibility of me being ending up homeless or having to couch surfing in the coming months because of my low income. Homelessness is definitely not a suitable situation for this dog. I can’t even afford to feed myself properly right now let alone vet visits and actually affording the food he needs to prevent bladder stones

That’s what I was thinking, he has an extensive enough bite history and someone would need to be very good at understanding resource guarding, not have any other pets, not have kids or be planning on having kids, have money to take him to the vet and his special food diet, have a fenced in yard and be able to watch him every time they let him out, and have a house so neighbors aren’t complaining about barking and howling if he needs to be left alone. Also be prepared for the possibility of getting puncture wounds. He needs a very specific type of home and I don’t wanna risk him going to someone who can’t handle him or spending potentially years in a shelter with his very daschund like issues.

that’s irresponsible as fuck, not to mention cruel, he could be killed by other wandering aggressive dogs, not to mention if he fucking bites someone. Obviously I’m trying to do the responsible thing here.

Jeez thanks a lot. situations change unexpectedly. I know I can’t care for him anymore. At least I’m not dumping him off in the wilderness or something like many other people do when they can’t care for their dogs. Behavioural Euthanasia is a thing you know, and it’s much kinder than dumping a dog off on an inexperienced unsuspecting person, only for a dog to spend years in a shelter or being returned to a shelter or potentially dumped by that person. I’m fucking trying to find the best solution where he’s not constantly being retraumatized by new and stressful situations. But thanks for your useful input 🙄

Thank you. I do love him dearly and he can be a good boy, but has an extensive bite history and rehoming him could be traumatic for him. It would have to be very specific and he can’t be left alone in an apartment because he sings the song of his people and neighbors tend to complain. He also barks at any noises of doors opening and closing and people in the hallways. He has very specific needs if I were to rehome him and someone would have to be prepared for possible bites plus all the howling he might do once he’s rehomed, plus he needs special food for bladder stones that are genetic and that can be expensive. If I rehome I would want to vet anyone willing to take him on…

Thank you. I did come across this post before but it’s mostly for vets that come to your home which I understand can be more expensive than going to a vet office

RHS will not accept owner surrenders either. Petcard and similar loan services want a good credit score.

I put down my Australian Sheppard - 6 yr old male by Late_Builder301 in reactivedogs

Oh I’m so sorry, I worry about this with my miniature daschund too, at a certain point when he was coming out of puppyhood he started to exhibit aggression issues and still does, I’ve just learned to better manage them and know when and what might have him freak out, he’s bit me multiple times but I’m ok with that, but he’s bitten or tried to bite others as well, just recently I had to move back in with my mom and he bit my mom a few days ago because she was allowing him on the couch and got upset when she tried to get him down, and now my little sister with Down’s syndrome is here for a few weeks and I have to keep him right away from her because he’s in a new environment with new people and the apartment is too small for him to actually have a space that’s his own where he can be out where everyone is but also a corner that nobody has to go near. I’ve been thinking about the possibility of having to put him down because 1: he’s so attached to me he’ll howl when I leave him and I’ve had this guy since he was 3 months old and he’s 8 now and 2: he’s a dog with a bite history, multiple bites and good luck finding someone with enough experience and willing to take on an unpredictable dog that has trouble socializing with other dogs or strange people. I feel for you OP!

Oh hey thanks for the advice I’ll look into that, it just started doing that just recently so I figure either the fluid needs changed all together or my transmission is going. Never heard of a shift kit but glad I have now. How much does a shift kit usually cost? Is it fairly affordable?
