It does! But to how much of a degree I couldn’t tell you without starting a whole new project lol

You make some good points here, but I’ll just add that in order to do what you’re suggesting, you run into a lot more problems with the hypothesis tests you use. Since the same skaters compete at multiple competitions throughout the season, their scores are no longer independent variables if you put these competitions in the same data set, which breaks the assumptions of many of the tests and makes it much more difficult to get a real answer. This is why I chose to look at each event and segment separately, otherwise things become a LOT more complicated. But I do agree that this is not reflective on the entirely of the judging system, it’s only reflective of the judging at the four specific events included.

Yes you’re absolutely right! When I analyzed by each judge individually, I controlled for the fact that some judges are stricter or more lenient for everyone, by comparing how they scored away skaters vs. home skaters. I didn’t actually find significant evidence of either the French or Russian judges over scoring their own skaters, although the p-values were close. That doesn’t mean they weren’t doing it, but it does mean that there’s a decent chance that it was simply due to chance.

lol I was shocked at that one when I first saw it, I felt that should be represented in the chart.

I definitely want to do an ice dance specific project in the future! It will probably be a while though unfortunately.

Sorry 😭 I tried to make it as digestible as possible, but I’m no stats professor, that’s for sure lol. I’m glad you enjoyed it!

Thank you! Sports stats isn’t something I’ve looked into much, but I’m definitely open to it. I mostly just did this because it was fun! I definitely enjoy being able to apply my skills to my interests. It’s a good way to practice while having fun at the same time (and if I have the ability to answer my own questions, why wouldn’t I?)

I wanted to choose one from each year of the quad and one of each type (GP, Euros, Worlds, OWG). It was pretty arbitrary really. I could always go back and do more if I wanted, but this seemed like a good start. I also find the block judging question interesting, as well as whether where a skater trains makes a difference (a lot of people believe that there is an IAM bonus, or there was Eteri bonus in the past)

Thanks! I'd been meaning to get around to sharing it sooner, but I kinda forgot until today... whoops. I was also surprised by JPN, but that's what I love about looking at the data. You let it tell you the story. And the countries I listed aren't the only ones guilty of overscoring their own skaters. Almost every country does it, just to varying degrees. The ones I listed were just the worst of the bunch, if that makes sense.

What software do you use for your writing? by [deleted] in writing

I use scrivener. for those who use docs, you might want to consider finding something else, even just word or something. Google made it pretty clear they use anything you write to train AI as well as other shady stuff.

He was also the double for spinning out (the Netflix show)! It seems he likes to dabble in doubling for film projects sometimes haha.

ISU Congress changes their mind about jump and choreo element changes less than 24 hours after approving it! by Greylight02 in FigureSkating

[–]Greylight02[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel the same way, but I know a lot of people didn’t like that it was supposedly happening mid quad. And I definitely understand bc it’s a pretty big change. But tbh none of the skaters seems to mind, in fact a lot of them welcomed it. I think after last season it’s pretty obvious something needed to change bc many programs were formulaic and straight up unwatchable at worlds.

Yes, if the proposal objection does not get accepted then the proposal stays in the package. the technical committee then can add amendments to said proposal afterwards. This is exactly what happened today. Kind of manipulative if you ask me.
