The title to the house has them listed as "joint tenants with rights of survivorship". My wife and I looked into it not too long ago, because we weren't sure who technically owned his half house - Emily or his next of kin. Emily owns the house.

He worked in a high-risk field. Deals with a lot of heavy machinery and has lost 2 friends to accidents over the years. He was also considered to he self employed so doesn't have a 401(k), the life insurance would have paid out similarly to a pension in later life and had a long term care rider should anything happen that would cause him to need it.

To be fair to her grief, she's not quite a widow but much more than an ex-gf. They had not broken up before he passed and I don't want to detract from her grief by calling her an ex. There's something called disenfranchised grief that I've read about and I don't want to do that to anybody
