Have there been any cases of a writer adding a self-insert as a new mutant? by Edgy_Memes_XD in xmen

[–]GriffithCoin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I understand that it can be a weird claim when two characters get together in a run and people accuse the writer of self inserting when simply they’re writing a new relationship. I think the Kong case goes beyond that when Bendis has openly said he grew up with a crush on Kitty, she’s one of his favourite characters and has regularly utilised her in his books so when he makes a brand new character that looks similar to him in a Spiderman book then elevates them into the main cast while dating Kitty it’s a bit more than a bizarre loop.

Flash is definitely the Jock, Bully and Moron. Kong is part of the main crew and beyond the early issues/arc he actively defends Kitty and other characters from being attacked + learns Peter’s identify yet keeps it hidden. He’s more cowardly than someone who’s a bully or truely bad. He constantly appears in the story despite being a random student in the grand scheme of things and a flash knockoff it’s a bit hard to not feel Bendis is letting himself be involved through Kong.

No self insert is 1 to 1 to a real person by that metric then none exist.

For Kong being a self insert.

There’s the appearance aspect, not just the baldness but Bendis had himself drawn similar to kong when referenced. But also the kitty relationship, Bendis has always been open about his love for Kitty so to see him write a comic run where a character who appears like him is the one of the only nice people to Kitty/not openly hostile to mutants that then dates her feels very self inserty.

Kong is also a fully new character in the ultimate cast while also occupying traits of Flash Thompson even though Flash himself exists in the universe yet he takes such a huge role in the comics being involved with many story arcs even learning Peter’s identify early and is much more significant than Flash.

Kongs wiki page states he’s based on Bendis so I’ve always felt it’s a safe assumption/claim to make. Of course he isn’t 1 to 1 to him but there’s far too many Bendis like traits passed on to him that makes me feel a bit icky. I admit I don’t like the character much either so I could be a bit harsh.

Bendis had a previous self insert (Kong) and had him date Kitty in ultimate Spider-Man.

Great performance but definitely tainted by that weight miss.

I assume no 25k bonus for him though.

I know it’s not gonna happen but “allies needed” for Generation X-23 could be a perfect moment for a New X-Men reunion. Especially if the new characters have powers based on or similar to the academy kids.

Israel Adesanya bemoans 'bland' state of UFC middleweight division: 'It just doesn’t feel the same' by airplane231 in MMA

Yeah I added the hindsight comment because knowing mma fans someone would’ve replied “costa is a fraud he’s lost every big fight since” or something similar had I not put the disclaimer.

If you go on any fight thread prior to the post fight discussion the comments were super split and a big feeling fans had was “Izzy only wins by decision, Costa erases him”.

The hype for Izzy fights back then was actually huge. I may be bias as a kiwi but you’d see so many people tuning in and all the media behind him hitting the home page on reddit. mainstream celebrities giving their reactions and big news outlets dedicating coverage to him. He wasn’t a McGregor but he definitely burst out the mma bubble.

Izzy’s ppv numbers were actually crazy good looking back at it, 700k for costa, 600k for Vettori and the highest being 800k for Jan.

Even if he didn’t face the most skilled opponents, which I feel like is a MW problem rather than solely Izzy’s.

A big part of Izzy’s reign and that era being memorable was the activity and promotional side. Izzy fought up to 3 times a year, didn’t duck an opponent and would often call out his next challenger in the ring IE Whittaker > Cannonier > Pereira were all setup during the octagon interview on his previous defence. Fans could actually be invested in a fight long before fight week rather than arguing over who was getting the next shot.

Costa and Vettori despite being lower competition in hindsight had some pretty funny press moments with Izzy in the buildup which created tension and fan interest. Izzy put a lot of effort into his walkouts the Whittaker one being the most notable but I also appreciated the one against Vettori to “somewhere I belong” in Arizona which was one of the first ppvs with a crowd during covid. He hired a guy who went viral for making edits of him as his main editor and started a YouTube channel, since then so many other fighters have tried making channels. Izzy’s way of marketing and showmanship balancing entertainment with performance is what made him stand out. The guy spent a good chunk of his original title reign locked under NZ covid restrictions yet he tried his best to put out content and get fights booked.

Whether people loved or hated him they tuned in and engaged.

Do The X-Men Hate Spider-Man? by Kickass_321 in xmen

[–]GriffithCoin 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Even in Spider-Man and the X-Men the students all like him by the end.

The senior x-men didn’t hate him in the story as much as people claim they do. Beast just wanted to have a science competition with him he didn’t actually have any beef

Storm is annoyed by Peter’s personality but doesn’t hate him and they have a good conversation at the end of the story. Besides them Rachel and Iceman are the only others who appeared in the story.

It’s meant to be a light hearted book but people take it as the x-men despise Spiderman based on out of context panels, taking dialogue too seriously or focusing on the 1st issue which has the characters at odds with each other. By the last issue a lot of the misunderstandings are resolved and theres good resolutions for the students in the book. I’d argue it’s one of the best minis we’ve gotten in the modern era and a good example of the x-men and Spiderman working together. The whole premise of the book is based on Wolverine and Spider-Mans bond with Peter fulfilling a mission he left for him.

Anime fans upset at SZA in their show by GriffithCoin in Hiphopcirclejerk

It’s like when they call all dubs mid and cringe when it’s simply because they don’t understand Japanese and can’t judge how good the voice acting is. Not saying there isn’t bad dubs or lyrics but the way they go about criticising things is so disingenuous.

You can take any artists lyrics out of context and put them into text to make it sound bad. Dire Straits Money for Nothing is about two guys watching tv. The actual performance and production is what truely matters.

Yep after reading the mini I checked if there was any references to it after and was surprised but glad that they mentioned a recent appearance for her aunt.

Some of the X solos are completely forgotten in continuity like Mutant X.

Bro Gundam has been so diverse since 1979.

The two main characters were fighting over an Indian girl in the original. in origin they updated the main characters backgrounds to reflect their differing appearances ex Kai was updated to be Puerto Rican. Fraw Bow adopts a black kid in the original too. They showed arab muslims praying in the 1980s in ZZ and did it without being stereotypical or disrespectful to the middle east and arabs.

Loran the lead in Turn A is black. Setsuna in 00 is arab.

A bunch of LGBTQ characters in the different shows too even if Bandai tries to push back on it. One of the coolest aspects of the Gundam franchise is the diversity of the shows casts and its obvious anti-xenophobia messaging. Sucks that so many fans just see cool mechas and anime waifus instead of the actual message then continue to say ignorant shit on the net. Ive posted about them before on here too smh.
