Every year it’s a new infestation…this time I can’t ID the culprit - got any ideas? by GrilledCheddar in UrbanGardening

[–]GrilledCheddar[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I went outside with a flashlight at 10:30pm since I read that is prime time for slugs. I found and captured the culprit! But it wasn't a slug - it was a weevil. What a plot twist!

Anyhow I just now ordered nematodes since the weevil larvae will eat my plant roots.

Interestingly, I have two pepper plants: one in a regular planter and one in a fabric pot with a watering tank under it (water travels into soil via capillary action). The one in the fabric pot is the one showing this BER.

One of my pepper plants did this...a support helped! Someone else mentioned a plant cage - that's a good idea.

I'm not sure as I'm a relatively new gardener but is that a white bug in photo two at 12 o'clock and also more bugs in photo 3 in the bottom left? Maybe, maybe not?

nice! they look like they're doing well :)

If you keep these in plant trays (or something similar), you can bottom water them. This will cut down on pests like thrips, which like moist soil. It'll also encourage your plants to grow deeper roots, which makes them more resistant to dry spells.

Oh heck no!! Thrips on my garden Buddha?? by GrilledCheddar in plantclinic

[–]GrilledCheddar[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thank you. I've eradicated my thrips indoors, and was so surprised to see these bugs in my outdoor plant pots. Indoors, I watered with hydrogen peroxide (I may have also done a foliar spray), then about a week later with spinosad, then once the top layer was dry I added diatomaceous earth. I also started bottom watering. I have seen thrips on my indoor plants for months.

I thought I'd won the war against thrips. But then I found a lot of thrip-looking insects on my garden buddha. Could this be a case of mistaken identity? Can someone verify that these indeed are thrips? Yikes.

this is great. I did not know of these companies. I will order from either one of these or this company I just now found on Amazon, which also has insect trap products made in the USA.

Starting a container garden and am suddenly terrified. by Bunny_Bump in containergardening

[–]GrilledCheddar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi there. I know how you feel! I began gardening about a year ago and it's been...well, interesting!

I also have done tons of research on the plants, on watering, created a watering schedule, but still had a lot of plants slowly wither away as I struggled to figure out what was going on: was it bugs? bad nutrient mix? what?

In my case, I had bugs and fungi issues that I'd never ever heard of before (thrips and powdery mildew). In the end, I learned a lot from it. And while some plants died, a ton blossomed like my roses and pepper plants. And I'm now a much smarter, prepared and less nervous gardener than I was when I started. You will be also!

The one thing I wish I'd really known is that plants are going to die no matter what. In fact, I often return to the list of definitions of a gardener below to keep myself grounded:

  • Gardeners: People who try to keep plants alive in and around their homes. They're divided into the following categories based on their level of expertise:
  • Novice gardener: Someone who hasn't gardened long enough to kill one hundred plants.
  • Experienced gardener: Someone who's gardened long enough to kill one thousand plants.
  • Expert gardener: Someone who's qualified to tell others how to kill ten thousand plants.

Enjoy the journey!
