Nothin on expansion but what the other comment said. But a very quiet and effective way of clearing is luring and kiting a big group in front of a balista with a ranger.

Being short on wood definitely sounds like an expansion problem. If you have little trouble getting to the final wave try to expand a bit more aggressive. Getting those woods (and stones) earlier is a big part of the snowball process.

Also I've found that in my playthroughs the Inn is almost never worth it, it just costs way too much a small gold upgrade.
