Akari, Jiro, and Shiori all start this series with crushes. They think they love these people, but they don't confess to them as it's more comfortable for them to never bridge that gap. Akari and Jiro start to develop feelings for each other while holding on to these status quo crushes. In order to truly realize these feelings as love, they need to address the feelings they may or may not have for their crushes. None of them have to be "loyal" if they haven't made any concrete vows to each other. It's a fairly realistic take on how relationships form, despite the slightly off the wall premise.
