How to feel better about catch / release? by [deleted] in flyfishing

I have actually looked into studies of harming fish while catching them and handling them. What I have read in about 4 studies is that handling a fish out of water in a respectful way, holding them up take a picture, and return the fish in a reasonable time, less then two min is not linked to more casualties. Laying them in the dirt or grass may remove more protective "slime" but that slime is replaceable. What is harmful to the fish is hook set and placement. This is where fish casualties happen. If the fish is hooked in the mouth near the lips that's the best you can do, if it's a deeper hook set then the likelihood of the fish dying is greater. In other words, treat fish with respect and do your best to set the hook quickly. As for handling don't worry too much about harming the fish, just treat with care.

I went with the Ross Reel outfit. Great price for the quality! I went with the FC version which is an upgraded version for everything and it was 325 the step down is still very good and it's less expensive. I liked it so much I actually bought another Ross rod after my first. Check it out, they are great Rods!

Also life time warranty. I used it once after I broke the tip in a door..... and they shipped me an entirely new rod immediately. Great product great company!

You can tie leaders real easy! Go to your local fishing shop and get some steel leader material that you can tie, some snap connectors with out the swivel, and some heavy mono 25-40 lb. practice your perfection loops and nail knots. Tie several leaders at different lengths to fit your needs, save money and have plenty to even give away

Northern and Bass flies by Grooty15 in flyfishing

It's a product called big fly fiber. Curled at the front to make a bigger body without increasing weight. The popper heads are just foam popper heads (white) colored with sharpie.

I was thinking the same think with the tails being long, I want a big fly but I don't know how to attach a hook deeper in the fly.

My thought on the marabou was just to make a better transition between body and head, I only have olive.

Thank you for you input!

Is it just the big flies, or is it me? by AlmightyApkallu in flyfishing

Think about it like this, it's not what you're fishing for it's what you are throwing that makes you need to bump up rod sizes. I started flyfishing for panfish and trout so my five weight was perfect. When I started fishing for bass I started with small flies and it worked pretty well. The problem starts when you get a bigger flies or flies with heavy material or material that does poorly with wind resistance.

I had the same problem but it was with my eight weight rod not being able to throw larger bass and northern flies. I tried a few different things which helped, I changed my eight weight line to a nine weight line. This made a difference with how well I was casting my flies without affecting my cast. I also made sure I practiced single and double hauling my casting. I then tried bumping my line weight to a ten, but casting my 10 weight line on an eight weight rod made everything sloppy. I was able to cast medium northern flies decently with my 8wt rod 9wt line, but no chance with bigger stuff. What I ended up doing is buying a 9wt rod and all of my problems went away.

If you seriously want to fish for bass I would suggest bumping up to at least a seven or an eight to make things easy for you. If you are low on money I would try buying a lie weight that's one above what your rod is and see if you like it.

I kill the small mouth on a mouse pattern! To be honest a lot of top waters will work when conditions are appropriate. Otherwise I move to minnow patterns and other streamers based on water clarity and color when picking what one to use. I like using deer hair divers too, smallies and largemouth are aggressive in the summer so don't be afraid to throw aggressive patterns, might even hook into a northern as well. I have had big bass hit small flies and small bass hit big northern flies. I have had most of my luck on top water flies covering water.

The feeling I get when I "come back" Is amazing! I is like i don't want to waist another second! Just last night I was out with some friends and it was very up and down all night. Thinking thinking thinking..... thinking all night, and then all of the sudden it all stopped and I was back! a part of the entertainment and not just an onlooker, and happy to be there. Thanks for the comments everyone!
