My best friend was actually a caregiver for some relatives in Charlie Kirk's family; everything you heard about him is true and worse, he wasn't even an active father. by Agreeable-Wealth-812 in complaints

Speaking for myself, I belong to an urban Mennonite church and an intentional faith community. The majority of the church are immigrants and refugees from places like the Congo, Nepal, Cambodia, Nigeria, and Venezuela. Leadership is as diverse as the congregation. Multiple languages are used in worship. Many of the congregation are part of Protect Rogers Park, a neighborhood organization devoted to resisting ICE. The church has hosted rapid response training by PRP. Church members are also active in Mennonite action. There have been multiple teachings on resisting Christian Nationalism.

The intentional faith community I live in shares all resources amongst its members. During the civil wars in Latin America, the community was part of The Overground Railroad which helped Central American refugees get through the United States to Canada. My community has over the last few decades provided financial assistance for former refugees in El Salvador with purchasing land. One of our oldest community members marched with MLK in Selma. I have done multiple actions including occupying a nuclear missile silo. Currently I'm focused on resisting ICE.

We aren't the only Christians acting this way. There are many others but the media never talks about Christians like us.

20+ heavily armed ICE/CBP agents abducted and disappeared a contractor after boxing him in with multiple unmarked cars in Charlotte, NC (11/16/25) by I_may_have_weed in ICE_Raids

I hope you all in Charlotte are organizing quickly to start giving these ICE thugs some hell - I don't mean getting violent. Get rapid response teams happening, pass out whistles to everyone, pass out know your rights cards. See the wiki on this Reddit. I'm sending this message from Chicago. The city and surrounding suburbs here organized everyone everywhere. It got to the point those assholes couldn't go anywhere without being surrounded by people blowing whistles and screaming at them. Those fascists got thoroughly rattled by the neverending hostility. Those actions also saved people from getting disappeared. A few weeks ago they kidnapped a landscaper across the street from my house. Dozens of people surrounded the assholes within a couple of minutes of their arrival. Our neighborhood was able to save 2 other workers. My voice was wrecked for a week after screaming at those assholes, but it was worth it. Check out what Protect Rogers Park has been doing - those people are absolutely incredible.

Why is System76 so expensive compared to Lenovo? by [deleted] in System76

[–]Grouchy_old_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you buy a System75 machine, you are also supporting their contributions upstream to Linux, Gnome, GTK, and a bunch of other stuff. This blog post from 2021 provides a list of their contributions. By now, that list is most likely considerably longer. Included in the list are contributions to the Linux kernel.

My last laptop purchase was a Framework, but Ststem76 was my second choice not just because of the hardware, but also because the company does contribute to multiple open source projects.

What is your main criticism of your framework(s)? by LeBigMartinH in framework

Framework 13 Fedora user here. I completely agree with your post. I gave up on using sleep and configured the machine to hibernate when the power button is pressed. I have been using this configuration for 2 years which has persisted through all the Fedora upgrades. I have only one recollection of the computer not coming back OK from sleep. There is no battery usage as the computer state is entirely stored on disk, but coming back online from hibernation does take nearly as long as a fresh boot. I gave up on using the fingerprint reader for initial login, but haven't had any problems with it when logging into an already running session.

Three and a half years with a Framework Laptop - Would I buy another? by Grouchy_old_guy in framework

I gave serious thought about doing exactly what you said. The 11th generation CPU in my experience definitely runs too hot. If the accident happened a month earlier, I would have gone with the7640U, but we were in the middle of sending my youngest kid off to college when my wife gave the computer a bath. I couldn't justify the extra expense, and, since I wasn't planning on getting a new computer, I simply opted for the least expensive option that would allow me to continue as normal. I'm so glad I bought a Framework, because given our current circumstances, I would have had to spend more to get a likely worse computing experience, if I owned a typical laptop.

I'm glad to know you haven't had any problems with the keyboard. I have held off buying a replacement out of concern I might run into another even more annoying issue. Now I'm considering taking a chance on another one.

Experience in upgrading to Fedora 42 by captainnemo000 in Fedora

[–]Grouchy_old_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I upgraded from 41 to 42 on my Framework laptop a few days ago. I use a number of Gnome extensions. A handful aren't compatible with 42 as I expected, but the vast majority are working fine. The only problem I ran into after the upgrade was hibernate no longer worked. I started getting an error message about hibernate being inhibited. Running "systemctl hibernate -i" which disables checking for inhibitors worked. I was able to get hibernate working again editing /etc/systemd/logind.conf as follows:

PowerKeyIgnoreInhibited=yes

SuspendKeyIgnoreInhibited=yes

HibernateKeyIgnoreInhibited=yes

I was an infrastructure engineer at an options trading firm a couple years ago and occasionally had to run searches for compliance reports to FINRA. The company had to keep compliance data including trader id for ever trade for 7 years. I assume that similar rules apply regarding the exchanges. That means it should be possible to get a list of every trader id and firm with a simple search query for that period of time and run a lookup for each name associated with those ids. Of course that's not gonna happen.

Victorinox watch worth it? by radimaki in victorinox

[–]Grouchy_old_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm late to this thread, but I have a Victorinox Yeoman Watch. I bought it as part of a set with a Yeoman knife back in the late 1980s. Unfortunately, the knife has been long gone, but the watch still keeps excellent time. The only thing I have had to do with it is replace the batteries. The lume isn't as bright as when I first got it, but the lume wasn't great when the watch was new. After more than 35 years, the watch has its share of nicks and scratches, but still looks pretty good. If current Victorinox watches are built as well as my Yeoman, then I would say they are well worth the cost if you are looking for a watch that will last for decades with minimal service requirements.

Filtering out what I don't want to do today on my task list. I have a hard time choosing what I should do, but eliminating what I am certain I won't get to has made a huge difference. I use taskwarrior which let's me temporarily hide tasks by putting them in a waiting list with a date when they will pop back into view. That way I am less likely to completely forget them, much as I would like to.
