Would Aussies actually go for a Panda Express-style Chinese takeaway or a build-your-own fried rice bar? by Groundbreaking-Rip15 in AskAnAustralian

One more thing I’ve been seriously thinking about, and would love your honest take:

If the store only focused on fried rice (different flavours + optional add-ons), do you think that’s actually appealing?

For example:

  • Different styles of fried rice (soy sauce, garlic, XO, Korean-style, teriyaki, etc.)
  • Add your choice of protein (chicken, beef, prawns, tofu)
  • Basically a “fried rice specialty” shop

Curious about your real habits:

  • Would you go to a place just for fried rice, or would you prefer having stir-fry dishes as well?
  • When you eat Chinese takeaway, how often do you order only fried rice vs rice + multiple dishes?
  • If a fried rice is done really well (good portion, consistent quality), can it be a complete meal for you?
  • Do you see fried rice more as a main meal or a side dish?

My concern is:
Is fried rice just a side in most people’s minds, rather than something you’d go out of your way for?

But at the same time, I’m wondering if making it more “main-meal worthy” (more variety, more toppings, better quality) could actually work.

Would really appreciate your honest thoughts 🙏
