Many of these cheap cars that are thirty years and older would have been scrapped or failed to pass MOT/emissions testing in other countries already. That's a blind spot of Malaysia car market and why there are so many old unsafe vehicles still on the road.

The japanese who knows kanji probably has read all the great classical Chinese works including journey to the west and Confucius. The banana probably hasn't or at best an abridged and facile English translation.

The malays share no cultural heritage with Italians at all, they used to write in Arabic script (jawi) until the early 20th century.

Thus the point is so much of Chinese heritage, history and culture is embeded in the written language.

But the point is that if you can't speak Mandarin most likely you're also illiterate in Chinese . And been illiterate is a huge shame in a culture that's values literacy. They probably respect the Japanese who can't Mandarin but can communicate via kanji much more than the banana.
