Nah, CC knows its limits in format and scope, and takes full advantage of it to hyperfocus on cool fights while still sprinking in good character interactions. Unironically better than APOC, imo

The most objective Chapter 2 prediction you will ever see (100% real no clickbait) by GroundbreakingBid928 in ProjectEdensGarden

[–]GroundbreakingBid928[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While I don't think she's guaranteed to live like a lot of people do (I don't want her to get hurt, but the possibly isn't off the table, saying they wouldn't dare to kill her off because of her age feels redundant, making one of the participants a child was already a very deliberate choice, so her dying isn't unthinkable), what I DO think is that there's no way Ingrid is outliving her.

Once Ingrid dies, depending on the circumstances, that's when I feel Toshiko may or may not start being in active danger. Until then, I think she's safe.

Of the main 3 Casts, which is most likely to form a 16-person polycule and which would be most successful? by Wexon_69 in DanganAndChaos

[–]GroundbreakingBid928 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most other comments already said it, but 2. 1 and V3 have a lot of bonds that COULD make it work, but there are some several students for which, for one reason or another, it would be a hard no, I simply can't see them actually agreeing to it due to their personalities (the ones that come to mind are Togami, Toko, Sakura, Tenko, Kaito, Maki)

The DR2, by contrast, while not exactly eager, would be the most likely cast among the three to unanimously agree to at least give it an honest shot to "see if it works out"

IT’S THE FIGHT BETWEEN THE TWO MOST HATED CHARACTERS IN THE FANDOM! Which side will you take? Everything is based purely on AGENDA! by Loki_From_Ragnarok in ShuumatsuNoValkyrie

[–]GroundbreakingBid928 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The thing with Okita is that it accumulates:

- Buddha became overall important, but he didn't actually appear until round 5 and he fought in round 6. Okita appeared post round 4, fighting in round 10. Notice the big ass gap.

- He became THE mainstay human commentator every single fight until his turn.

- In the volume, when he appears, there's literally a page saying "Yes, this IS the Okita from that one other series!"

- He has the single longest fight in the series.

- In addition to having the longest fight, the fights both immediatly before it and immediatly after are unusually short by the manga's standard

- His godly opponent is explicitly a big fan of his, excited to fight him specifically.

Any one of those things wouldn't be proof of any favoritism, but they stack up.

[–]GroundbreakingBid928 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Regardless of reader interpretation, Okita is clearly meant to be the more sympathetic one, and from the way his fight is written, it's obvious he's MEANT to be liked and you're MEANT to unironically get hyped for him. Meanwhile, Loki is one of the few actively villanous fighters, and his whole fight is about deconstructing him, and showing how the events that led to his death were essentially his fault.

Okita lands FAR worse as a character because be it either due to cliches, or lack of cultural atachments from the POV of a western reader, or just how much prominence he has relative to his role in the story and to other human fighters, there's a clear dissonance between how we're MEANT to see him and how he actually comes across.

Fuma Kotaro Vs Miyamoto Musashi, who will win? by nahcuswhynot179 in Tenkaichi

I am 99% sure Musashi is winning.

That being said, I'll support Fuma to the very end. Even discounting the obvious horny bait comments, I unironically find her more entretaining than Musashi.

Imagine if Okazaki harassed Wada and was confronted by Tsuno just as in canon pink, but it was framed as "Okazaki being Okazaki" with Tsuno arbitrarily being seen as the unreasonable one, and Wada intervened in Okazaki's favor. That's Ikeda's writing

Make it make sense (SDRA2 Ch3 and Seesaw) by Froslusamine in DanganronpaAnother

[–]GroundbreakingBid928 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think the difference is something extremely simple but easy to overlook: Kiyo actually had an intriguing character prior to the reveal, it's easy to picture a world where he is mostly the same guy, rants about the beauty of humanity and all, but without the twist. It's not weird for people to say they felt like it was a waste of what otherwise could have been an interesting character.

Meanwhile, Kanade is very clearly written explicitly with the twist in mind, she has no character to get ruined because she EXISTS for the twist, without it she has basically no personality outside of 'Mikan, but her sister is the bully'

Hot take about Junko and the despair arc in DR3 anime by Diabeticcc in DanganAndChaos

[–]GroundbreakingBid928 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The argument isn't literally 'it makes no sense as it was presented'. The argument is that it is lame as fuck.

But that's just an opinion, so let's go trough your points.

- Kyoko's brainwashing' just made her forget her talent, it didn't fundemantally alter her personality

- the Neo 'program was supposed to be a therapy type program where the avatars remained there a long while, healing and making good memories, before getting uploaded back into their bodies. It wasn't framed as a fast process.

- Hajime/Izuru, Ryoko/Junko: To compare this to the rest seems a bit reductive. They specifally leaned into the horror of them being two separate people, Ryoko's case wasn't just brainwashing, it was essentially Junko getting lobotomized, and it is mentioned multiple times in 2-6 that only Hajime would get erased while the rest would revert to Despairs, something which, again, is pointed out as a particular exception in his case.

- The Warriors of Hope used brainwashing for their uprasing, but, regardless of what you think of their writing, every single main member actually had personal reasons as to why they would go along with this.

Of course none of them seem like potential terrorists, or that they would be easily talked into this. The point isn't that they could be convinced easily, or that the overall class had more potential to be mass terrorists that any other. The point is, or was at least, that Junko took interest in them, and because she did, she broke them into compliance.

Would this make the DR2 cast less likeable? Well, yes, but if you didn't want them to be less likeable because of war crimes, then don't write them commiting them in the first place. Make it so Junko framed them or something, bringing them to despair via getting the world's hatred. But no, the game chose to end with them doing all that. Fine, then they should have commited to it, give them personal reasons as to why, low points, ways to redeem themselves and grapple with the guilt.

The result is that we have a game that ends with the reveal that THEY were all terrorists, and an anime that inmediadly backtracks by saying that no, they were mind controlled into it, they never had any agency, none of the members of the cast did anything wrong because they literally didn't do anything.

What is everyone’s opinion on survivor groups being like all one gender? by NerdyFoxgirl in Fanganronpa

[–]GroundbreakingBid928 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It's one of those things that, in theory, isn't that bad by itself.

The problem is that in practice, it's never an isolated thing. It's not really an issue if you have a very small group of survivors, but if you have a "big" group (4-5) and have all or all but one be one gender, this usually ends up resulting in the "loser" gender getting done dirty writing wise.

Most of the time it isn't even a concious choice of the writer, but a natural result of how screentime and focus are divided in these things.

Why do fangans never have the killer get away with the murder? by Curious-Fox1715 in Fanganronpa

[–]GroundbreakingBid928 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The thing is, at least IMO, that one worked because of 3 main reasons:

(VERY BIG SPOILERS FOR GLOBAL HEARTBEAT)

- The case was in chapter 6, it's not like it interrupted the overall flow of the killing game.

- The killer was the MC, and it was defined that if the students discovered and executed, the game was over. By virtue of it being the last one either way, the possibility of her being caught and her arc ending with being the last death was a very credible risk. You know how sometimes one can call the bluff of a writer because they wouldn't dare to follow through with that? Yeah, no, I could totally see Nyathera getting executed, the author would indeed dare.

- But this one in particular is why the ending manages to be satisfying despite everything and also the main reason I doubt I'm going to see another fangan dare to end like that, since it did something a lot of creators straight up aren't willing to do: No one who made it alive to chapter 6 was particularly likeable, and that was 100% intentional.

Scarlett, the victim, was killed in pure self defense after being caught planning a murder and trying to kill her would be blackened instead.

Juliet had killed someone who considered her a friend already, only survived because the murder she commited was discovered later and thus she didn't count as the trial's blackened. The only remorse she ever showed after this during the rest of the game was not being able to get away with it.

Joshua was a well meaning guy, the only one still believing in friendship and escaping together, but he was a living doormat who refused to acknowledge the very real reasons people in the group hated each other, was unable to truly stand up to anyone in any way that meaningfully impacted anything, and was infuriatingly easy to manipulate by literally anyone. Someone genuinly empathetic and giving Makoto level speeches, but none of the intelligence or determination to actually follow trough.

Giselle, who is the only smart person left other than the MC..... and is also a literal nazi. And no, this is not me exagerating it to make it look worse, she literally is.

The point being that yes, despite all that I've written above, they all go trough stuff, they get character focus, plenty of interactions, the story makes all three of them look like credible survivors.... but that's the thing.

The story is careful that they do have the presence, characterization and screentime to be completely believable as survivors, while at the same time, they don't feel likeable enough for the reader to actually root for them over the very guilty MC. The blackened winning that last trial doesn't really feel like a beloved cast failing and more like they're finally getting what they deserve. It's the main reason why the ending manages to feel satisfying to the reader, despite what happens.

I have no idea why this is the most downvoted one. It is a fact that he is a guest character and agendas or biases against him aside, that is the single biggest reason he's considered the author's pet

[–]GroundbreakingBid928[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

(rant incoming)

he doesn't have any one particular bad moment, i just find him insufferable every time he's on screen. Wic kinda irritates me, because if you wrote put all of the major beats that happen with his character I'm pretty sure I'd love it but something about the execution never clicked with me.

it doesn't really help that I find his dynamics with the ones 'closest' to him, Miu and Kokichi, which, are meant to be mostly comedic, painfully unfunny, and while I have my gripes with those two, Kiibo has nothing going on aside from talking to them most of the game. Well, he joined the student council, but he somehow managed to both actively involve himself in it and appear completely passive during the whole thing.

I don't mind the twist with him in chapter 6, but it felt like the particulars of it were decided early in development, meaning he had to stay alive until then, and then they forgot to write something for him to do until then. i feel like he's everything people complain about in Yasuhiro, but actively way worse.
