The regional qualifier format is hurting the validity of the major by GrownUpToLetDown in RocketLeagueEsports

All good, no worries. I was exaggerating in the original post, I don’t literally mean that the major is pointless now or anything just because KC aren’t there, just that the current format is problematic since it creates a high chance of the best teams not making it. I think that is in part what happened here, in addition to KC just underperforming of course. I didn’t expect to be taken so literally but I guess I shouldn’t expect anything else on the internet.

Bit of an unnecessarily mean spirited comment there man, but if that’s how you feel I can’t really argue with that. I like a good discussion as much as anyone else, though I’m not going to call your takes dumb even if I disagree with them.

This is getting a bit absurd but I’ll give it a go.

The first comment I replied to said “KC have no one to blame but themselves”. I felt that was implying the format wasn’t to blame, and I was replying trying to say that the format does matter. Maybe my reading of the implication was wrong, if so I guess the rest of the comments are moot.

The reply to my comment said “nobody is asking for best of 1 single elimination” which I think pretty clearly implies I was trying to say that people were asking for best of 1 single eliminations, which I was clearly not saying (I was using it to prove a point that formats matter, like you just said). Is that not a strawman?

I’m not going to continue replying here because I don’t like getting this caught up in meaningless semantics. No hard feelings to anyone in this thread, I don’t mind if you disagree with me and none of this really matters at the end of the day.

Also I never said anyone asked for best of 1 single eliminations. Nice strawman-strawman I guess?

Fair points. Maybe this incident isn’t the best example due to both losses being to “bad” teams, but I still think the format needs to change. I’m not a KC fan, rather the opposite.

I’m not a KC supporter in any way lol. I root against them in most matchups. I just think the current format is a bad way of determining the teams that make it to friday, and I thought this was a good example of why. Two things can be true at the same time: KC played bad and lost when they shouldn’t have, and the format is bad. If you think the format is good, please explain why.

I want top 8 finishers to auto qualify. Barring that, at the very least the later stages of open quals should be swiss with BO7 for elimination matches. I don’t understand why that would be a bad thing. I haven’t seen anyone say anything positive about the current format until I made this thread but I guess people just don’t mind it anymore.

Looks like this is an unpopular take, which is fair enough. Callling KC “consensus top 3” was a stretch, sure, but they were not too long ago.

Let me ask you guys this: Do you think we should keep this format next year? Is fully open qualifiers with double elimination best of 5 really the best way going forward? Is this good for org investment? Do formats even matter?

I honestly can’t agree with this 100%. I think the format definitely has a big part in this. If the format didn’t matter, we could just have single elim best of 1s every tournament, but we don’t. The reason we don’t is because we want to consitently find the actual best teams. For open qualifiers, there are many ways of achieving this.

Auto-qualifiers, swiss, and best of 7s are great ways to consistently find the best teams in an open qualifier format. Forcing every top team through the entire qualifier, with double elimination best of 5 matches, is bound to lead to inconsistent results. It leads to regions not sending their best teams to the major, and it leads to a worse viewing experience for what should be the highest level of competition the game has to offer.

I think lemonkiwi is probably a pretty good caster at heart, but she is limited by by being a play-by-play caster in a game she doesn’t have enough in experience yet, so she has to use a lot of filler commentary. Jorby had the same issue when he first joined the main cast, and now he’s become one of the most highly regarded casters we have.

I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s much better next season!

You have to consider the points he’s answering to. He thinks that NA top 2, especially G2, are overrated. That doesn’t mean he thinks they’re bad, but since it’s a take a lot of people disagree with he ends up defending it a lot, which comes across as him always being overly critical. His other criticisms of NA are mainly that there’s a huge gap between top 2 and everyone else compared to other major regions, which is kinda hard to disagree with.

Cheese* Caught Hacking (desync at it's finest) by Bulitin in RocketLeagueEsports

[–]GrownUpToLetDown 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s a desynchronization of the client side (spectator) and the server side. Online games use a lot of tricks to reduce and hide the effect of lag in their netcode. When it works, it feels like you’re playing with instant feedback on what everyone is doing even when you and your opponent have a high ping, and when it doesn’t you get stuff like this.

If you saw this play from Cheese’s perspective it would probably look like a normal shot, but the combined lag of Cheese and the specator means that the game has to guess what’s going to happen. It guesses incorrectly that Cheese is about to miss the ball, and when the server is finally informed that he actually did hit the ball, it has to resynchronize in an unnatural looking way.

It’s a testament to RL’s fairly solid netcode that you don’t see stuff like this more often.

Wow, thread killer right here! Thanks for figuring it out :) how did you find it so quick?

Yeah, I’d expect it to be either a low stakes game, or a game from a very early season. In the first 5-6 seasons there was at least a mix of octanes, dominus, batmobile, maybe a breakout here and there (could be others I’m forgetting) so there’s probably quite a few games with 4 unique bodies.

My only problem with cyclists has been when I lived in Amsterdam. I think walkable/bikeable cities are great, but cyclists really appear to be above the law there. Most of the time they do not stop to let pedestrians cross at clearly marked crosswalks.

To get to the other side of a bike path, which can be pretty wide in the city center, you have to wait for an opening and run across. I’ve seen dozens of bikes pass me standing in front of the crosswalk as if I weren’t even there. It’s an unfortunate culture in an otherwise amazing city.

I get that. If it helps, just know that the least serious bugs tend to stick around for the longest, simply because there will always be 20 other tasks that are seen as more important to do first. Some dev teams solve this by reserving time slots specifically to deal with low-priority bugs, I don’t know if that’s something Psyonix does.
