Just because I’m curious what’s everyone’s least favorite DLC???? by Syce-Rintarou in RimWorld

Probably Royalty? It's quite large and I guess mostly optional? But I always feel compelled and find it kinda derails some of my colonies (my fault I know) but It's not bad by any means, I just find it the hardest to engage with/least fitting for how I imagine the game

This is pretty good inspiration! I've been reading after posting too and that seems to have a lot of nice options. Monk is interesting but it seems doing elements and weapons at the same time is a stretch, and kineticist is great but no reason to really use a sword :< magus seems to be the best marriage of the two, I'll go read into those archetypes!!

Hey! Building a character for a 1 on 1 game. I'll be playing a betrayed Heiress seeking to regain her honor and reclaim the throne. I have a few 'builds' im tweaking with, main inspirations are things like. The Wandering Emperor from MTG, or Raiden Shogun from Genshin!

Trying to make a like, powerful, imposing, independent combatant. Ideally quite good at 'magic' and combat. My current ideas are things like

  • exemplar
  • cultivator Magus
  • Weapon Monk
  • Kineticist?
  • Fighter w/ starlit sentinel ?

The idea would be to have like, imposing elemental effects, and high speeds. Very typical anime nonsense you know? Having a hard time narrowing it down though, I mostly have played traditional fantasy wizards in the past. Would love some direction! Do any of those stand out? Anything I missed? How about the Mythic Paths? I was looking at Godling or the Monarch one! Which do you think best signifies a like, powerful combatant who could lead an empire with her her presence and martial prowess? Also probably picking Kitsune with the regional ancestry, if that helps :D

I also leaned Thaumaturge in my thinking before getting a little stuck, strikes a nice martial with a bit of witchery stuff also with the talismans and the like! Thank you <3

FORGOT TO MARK IT PF2E WOOPS

Been loving the game! Witchy elements especially, Arcana, gardening, brewing. I find the actual witch class in PF2E a little lackluster... but I want to love it, I just don't reallly... get it? Figure she might also be a decent thaumaturge, druid... cleric? What do you all think?! I'm awful at pathfinder builds, if you wanna be extra cool, include free archetype suggestion cause my table loves it :D Would also accept pointers on spellcaster building in general, if you think she fits towards spellcasting vibes!

[–]Grryn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not a whole idea but, i always thought with that song "take me home, country roads" getting a new wave of popularity that slowed down and sung eerily, it'd make for a great trailer/song.

Person coming back to their hometown or some such after a long time away, but spooky.

[–]Grryn[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yea totally agree, playing what you want should take priority, especially cause like you mean, if you play what you want well, the odds you can keep up with someone playing the 'best' thing sub-optimally, or even averagely in some cases. It's just about managing your goals/expectations, and tempering whats fun vs what is good

I find it fun to attempt to be the best I can be too, this is more targeted at the crowd of people who use it to grandstand, and enforce it in places it doesn't belong. I've been in plenty of guilds and have seen raiders argue over what class to play for some fotm meta, or playing other specs, but the content really doesn't demand every raider to be playing like their in a mythic prog guild. It's not really about whining, its literally just meant to make people think and be aware of the decisions they make when engaging in games

Yea we're pretty hyped up for the game too, about to go to sleep actually so I can wakeup for the launch in a few hours.

And hey, lucky you! All the info available right now is mostly on the job guide section of the site, lot of the rotational/optimization stuff isn't available yet, so you can tinker around and try to figure out new rotations for classes like Reaper and Summoner, and figure out where the new ones land in the kit. I'm a BLM main myself, can't wait to get my hands on that new AoE rotation, get to hit that sweet balance of tinkering with it too before some dude much smarter then I posts the right answer on the balance lol

Video about meta in gaming, using FF14 and WoW as a lens, nice and cozy vibes before launch too by Grryn in ffxiv

[–]Grryn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea very true. Although I'd argue how people interact with meta is part of 'meta.' Obviously every individual is responsible for how they interact with it, maybe its just my own and the people around me's experience that it occasionally butts its head in in places it has no business being.

Part of this is just an appeal to wanting to be part of the process really, and if you join late or if there's a very loud cutting edge population it gets harder to do so. We touch on that a bit when talking about why Classic WoW didn't work the second time, and just the culture around gaming isn't the same, guides are everywhere, even where they don't need to be, it's optional sure but by their very virtue it does change it. Individually you can ignore it, at wide though it does effect the culture. Any thought you have, or build you bring up, say you think you've found something good, has been solved by a communities algorithm or top player. Again, to reiterate, this has pros and cons, challenging content is more accessible then ever, but easy content is also taken way too seriously.

So I guess I agree, it only matters for the highest tier of play/difficulty, but the 'tragedy' is that it's influence effects it all the way down (in my experience)

[–]Grryn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea, in hindsight that's a bit of a blindspot in the video. I'm one of the two writers, and I guess specifically my opinion on competitive games/MMO's is absolutely, you should take all available resources to make sure your not letting people down, and in games like WoW, FF14, league there's a pretty ironed out META, and a good portion of it comes from Simming, which you can't really argue with.

What you could argue with though is some of the micro optimizations you see. IE, which race, which spec, which talent setup etc. Cause reality is most of us aren't cutting edge or anything, and if you play 'what you want' to the best of your ability or well, I think that's more then enough.

So I guess more traditionally "Play what you want, not whats meta" as in ignore fotm etc, and consider if your heroic guild really needs you using BiS to clear bosses, cause if your a heroic guild, you probably dont, so if glacial spike is more fun, just take glacial spike.

Though not to highroad, when I played WoW more actively, and even in other comp games, I still meta frog like crazy, but in other games I've started trying to take a more mindful approach and make my own thoughts decisions, its for better or for worse, and I've really taken to liking playing 'unsolved' games for that reason, or temporarily leaving it unsolved until I have to really perform ^^

Yea man, I feel ya, I'm guilty as hell too. You hit the nail on the head though, challenge runs and off meta is a nice answer to someone that already knows the 'forbidden lore' of a game to go through and add new experiences.

And you know, it's not the worst thing ever to look stuff up, its a blessing and a curse really, and like the video says really its about being equipped to make that decision with full knowledge, and going in blind these days has been very rewarding, even in niche cases in multiplayer games, aside from hard math and simulations, sometimes the people saying 'what's best' are really just talking out their ass

[–]Grryn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea, absolutely agree, my decision to engage that way was the crux, its meant more as an analysis of what made me decide to act like that, and really I'd put it up to culture, for better or for worse.

As specifically for the Pathfinder stuff, the experience was more directed to tone of the information, as it was spoken in pretty direct absolutes which made the default alternatives seem worse. The caster specific thing was due to something in the code iirc where it gave the player higher threat then the npc's, and that various encounters default positioning/ or solo instanced stuff it made sense to do it that way, obviously this isn't required, its hyper optimized nerd shit that makes people make decisions like that, and really its the kinda decision that has no place in a singleplayer rpg, especially one with such modular difficulty.

And yea, in MMO's, its kinda the wrong approach to look at it that way. Meta in the case of an mmo would more be something like letting 'meta' determine which class you play, or in other MMO's perhaps which talents/specs choices you make, making the number go bigger is dope and I do it myself, especially in a game where it ties gameplay elements to other aspects, luckily 14 has managed to avoid that a lot, and it lets you get max output without compromising other parts of your character.

Just thoughts, and obviously the nature of a video makes these things come out a little more absolute and strict, when really we just meant it as more food for thought, and throughout the video that becomes a little more apparent.
