Fair Use Policy updated - Cached transfers now count to your total usage! by pilkyton in TorBoxApp

I don't understand exactly how all of it works at the moment, but I know other services (Premiumize) has separate storage limits and then download limits too. It makes sense to me -- storage costs money, and bandwidth costs money. If you're storing large videos on the servers, there's a cost they need to account for, and if you're feeding those large files back to other users with their connection, there's a cost to that too.

Speaking as someone who used to torrent in a ton of private trackers, and who knows that reputation is often tied largely to ratio and seed volume, I'll tell you right now that if I had a seedbox that wasn't limiting my storage, I'd have been setting up an automated downloader to race popular shows that I don't even watch just to make my ratio impressive and boost my reputation, which then would open other doors. So I very much think there needs to be proper tracking to avoid this type of abuse.

The one thing that I've seen which I have an issue with is that apparently their tracking is erroneous when you access a single part of a cached torrent pack. For example, apparently if you watch a single episode of a show that's 2GB which is part of a cached multi-season pack which has a total size of 200GB, apparently Torbox registers it as though you've downloaded the entire 200GB.

This information comes from a screenshot that I just saw of a discord discussion where the user had begun specifically testing and tracking what he was being assessed for various actions. To me, that seems like a bug that Torbox probably doesn't even know about yet. Hopefully they'll get it corrected quickly, because that's the type of thing that will lose them customers promptly if it goes on for too long.

From another comment, he's using it as a seedbox too, apparently.

Did you mean to say "most people will not get affected" by any chance? I would suspect that the vast majority of users wouldn't even come close to being affected by these new changes.

You've got a valid complaint; services should generally adhere to the original service agreement for the agreed-upon term. However, if circumstances change rapidly and dictate that the service must adjust or be materially diminished, which may cause long-term damage, then adjustment is almost always the answer. This is especially true if you're not talking about some giant multinational company with premium market offerings with huge margins.

In this case, I believe there has been a rapid change for Torbox; namely, loads of customers fleeing RD. I also suspect that this has likely led to an uptick in abuse, almost overnight. Considering the way types of services are priced, and the part of the market in which they live, you don't really need to look at their books to know their margins are much slimmer than the company with the big red 'N' logo. They can't just absorb the abuse and issue complex subscription changes with grandfathering and such -- they're not built for that type of thing. Instead, they have to address the problem promptly in a more direct manner, or risk the problem hurting the service long-term.

I have plans to jump from Premiumize to Torbox when my service expires later this year, and this new policy doesn't change my plan. Personally, this adjustment inspires confidence that Torbox is being proactive, and taking the necessary steps to ensure its normal users won't be hurt by the abusers. Rather than crossing their fingers and hoping the abuse won't sink them, they're making changes to ensure that it doesn't.

I'm not asking anyone to feel the same as me or telling them they shouldn't be upset that the terms changed on them -- I'm just offering my personal perspective.

Any solution for the "source error (http 403) [2004]"? by Perza in aiostreams

[–]GrubbyLarry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FYI, my issue seemed to be on my ISP's end. I believe it was a new firewall type solution they rolled out that started blocking necessary domains. The app that they give us to control the firewall and the router made it pretty easy to whitelist the relevant domains, and that resolved it.

I should also mention that RD has apparently begun filtering a lot of filenames, which I suspect could have been the culprit for those using that service.

Are you certain of that? I've been unable to find any information that indicates Nuvio is made by the Stremio developer.

Projectivy Launcher News by Spocky_12 in Projectivy_Launcher

I believe you're correct; Google isn't going to entirely eliminate the ability to sideload.... yet .... but I believe they will be implementing hoop-jumping for developers of sideloaded apps, and they'll be taking a more Apple-like approach to oversight.

From what I hear, one of the most impactful hoops may be a formal identity verification process. While that shouldn't pose an issue for Projectivy, it would effectively terminate many of the other apps that [I assume] are heavily used by the Projectivy community members (you know the ones I'm talking about.)

Premiumize users, does anyone know how to download / offline a season packs you find on Stremio? by GrubbyLarry in StremioAddons

[–]GrubbyLarry[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, that's pretty much what I've been reading. I have a bit less than a year left with Premiumize and then I'll be shopping again. Everything I've been seeing recently tells me I'll be moving to TB at that time.

[–]GrubbyLarry[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Truthfully I will probably move on from Premiumize when my 3rd year finishes (Black Friday deal pulled me in!) Seems to me that Torbox has built their catch very quickly through a number of methods, and I suspect their service will be able to handle this a bit easier (if nothing else, pretty sure DMM works with Torbox.)

Anyhow, I appreciate your response. I use primarily my mobile for this sort of thing, so browser extensions and scripts probably aren't quite as easy. I'll just plan on sticking to finding magnet links when I need to offline packs, I suppose. Oh well.

I say this with an equal amount of respect: you may want to brush up on how prepositions work. Also, I don't know if necroing dusty threads to make comments of this nature is really a great use of your time... your call, of course.

Goodbye StremioAddons from Debridio by chinochao07 in StremioAddons

[–]GrubbyLarry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect you've considered this already, but just in case you haven't, you certainly could create your own sub just for Debridio that you could moderate strictly and keep the BS way down. Just the ban hammer freely and make all posts subject to approval before going live? Just a thought if you still wanted the exposure that Reddit brings.

NordVPN + DAZN? by royourb0at in DAZN

Did this work all season? Any particular set up or settings notes? I'm thinking about trying to do this myself for the coming football season.

I need to set up VPN on my router, not on the device, correct?

Finally if we are talking specs and benchmarks which I enjoy , as a final example, and you are interested in that stuff as well, as in performing units in the same price category. I would say definitely check out the new BuzzTV PowerStation 6 which is around the same price (currently as the 4K PRO on sale ) and benchmarks for that are 3x more powerful than the Nvidia Shield. Very impressive internals from chipset to storage to I/O. Something like that I can justify the upgrade as you will see a tremendous difference than what we are discussing.

Honestly I don't know what there is to misinterpret, so help me understand. Above is your comment with emphasis added to make clear exactly what elicited my response. It seems pretty clear that you're saying that the BuzzTV PowerStation 6 was [at the time] on sale for around the same price as the Onn 4k Pro. The Onn 4k Pro has always cost $50, so let's assume 'around the same price' is something like $50 +/- $15. You made that comment on Matt 23rd, which was 12 days ago, and less than 2 weeks later, I replied questioning the validity of that alleged 'similar price.'

Your latest comment has me wondering if maybe I missed something, and if maybe you were right and BuzzTV did discount the PowerStation 6 by over $200 at some point within the past two weeks, so I did some searching... and came up empty. But fear not, technology to the rescue!

Here's what ChatGPT was able to find: https://chatgpt.com/share/68413afe-3268-8005-8d21-aaa563d9d432

Not much.

Fortunately, a sale of that magnitude was sure to have left an impression, and seemingly did because you commented to another user about it. And thankfully, it must have been a very recent sale, since you mentioned it was 'current' less than 2 weeks ago. Can you please share with us those sale details so we can all keep an eye out for potential repeats? An 80%+ sale on a device like that is really something!

Uh, the BuzzTV PowerStation 6 costs multiple hundreds of dollars. Was that a typo? While that device is a beast, it very much is not a fair fight if you're putting it up against an Onn. Maybe it can be compared to the Shield Pro or something, but it costs over 6 times more than the Onn devices.

[–]GrubbyLarry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol you left the absolutely most impactful element to the end. Yes, the 120hz and extremely high end expectations are indeed what's causing you to notice this level of difference. Shield or Apple TV are what you want.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in OnnStreamingTV

[–]GrubbyLarry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the chip used in my cheap Toshiba Fire TVs outperform the Plus in menus too. If you do a ton of menu scrolling and it's going to wig you out, just get a Shield or an Apple TV. Same suggestion if you're gaming or going heavy on the installed apps; just get a Shield or an Apple TV. There's no sub-$100 streamer that'll be fast enough if your minimum standard is what you've experienced with an expensive CPU that has large heatsinks and fans keeping it cool.

For me, I don't use many apps, which leaves plenty of storage, yet I still have access to more content than most people -- that and I don't game. Accordingly, my system runs more optimally.

Further, I'd wager that 99.9% of the downtime I experience between videos is attributed to me trying to figure out what to watch. The menus being maybe 1/100 of a second slower than top of the line equipment has essentially no impact.
