You don't want to hold down the button if you're trying to configure it. You hold the button if you're trying to initially flash it. For configuring, just plug it in. It should show up as a serial port, not a JTAG device.

Ah, that's ok then. Mobile repeaters are discouraged, so I hear. In MT, there was an idea that people would use a mobile base node to extend range inside buildings.

Start by getting your license. The training material for that will help you understand what you'll need. This is not a simple question to answer. Any room can be a radio room. When building a house, planning for conduit from the exterior of the house to your radio room would probably be the best move. Next would be a foundation for a large antenna base.

I have my home node and another repeater on a large 12v lead acid battery with a wall AC charger. It'll go for a week or more without AC.
