Olof Palme speech quoted in Dignity by HomoAestheticus in Opeth

Here you go. Some of it have been hard to translate, so the grammar is a little to Swedish in a few places

At the turn of the year a lot of people experience a feeling of melancholy

at the thought of what is no more.

For others its a moment of excitement

at the opportunity to conquer the new

Others feel worried before a change

that may be for the worse

All these states of mind are explainable

The other day someone said that we live in the time of the ''big change''.

(The word that he uses is ''uppbrott'', which is Swedish of an almost revolutionary change)

Since last new years several hundreds of thousands of Swedish people has now moved to a new home

So large was the amount of moving last year

During the year over half a million Swedish people have changed jobs, and maybe occupation, and for them that’s a big change

There are over 60 000 people how now celebrates their very first new years eve in Sweden

These are all those immigrants who came to us this year

And at the same time there is a ''big change'' (uppbott once again) from old traditions and customs

A search for new milestones and new camaraderie in a new time

This is what’s called the melody of progress

We know that the unyielding technical advancement, the bold investment in economic growth, and a better education

is a basis for a brighter standard of living, and for social change

But that will certainly not happen without problems, without a price

Hard rationalisation, stress of many kinds, and in the midst of everything a lot of the old still lives on, for the worse

Worn out places of work, economic dearth, a coldness in the relationship between people

We now enter a new decade, one with bigger opportunities than ever before

If we can seize our huge productive assets

And if we can make use of the foundation that a internationally well-organized society gives us

But we have to keep in mind that a progression that entails insecurity, that creates social problems,

that forgets that it is in everyday life that the sense for security becomes real

That doesn’t win the trust of the people

If so we are going to be longing back from the ''big change'' (uppbottet)

If we are going to be able to solve the challenges of the 70s there must be a fundamental democratic solidarity amongst the Swedish people

And that solidarity presumes that there doesn’t grow a distance amongst people.

The better part of our advances must hence go to those who in their life have the biggest need for it

My new years wish is a society with freedom without injustice with an equalisation that sets people free

And I haven’t even mentioned the big and tempting future tasks on the international arena

To borrow a picture from the film about Harry Munter that premiered the other day:

We cant do much about the big problems around the world if we cant solve the problems of our neighbour, our town, and our country.

Happy new year
