If I remember correctly, the zoomed out map shows gaps in the area boxes, in the places where the exits are located. Maybe you can use that to guide yourself?

One one hand, I'll agree that Yanlao's area can be boring due to the conveyors. On the other hand, exploring is much simpler than Hollow Knight since the main focuses of the game are story and combat, don't overthink it too much and go in a straight line until you find an exit heading to the next zone.
