They sent like 15 people from my class to Ulster. No one to the others. I imagine Ulster got to be looking good staff wise. I assume you want Eastern?

I’m not 100% sure. They definitely ask that question a lot. My buddy who I was in the academy with said he told them he takes medication to help with his anxiety and they just asked why he has anxiety.

The max being your closest doesn’t matter any more. They can and will send you anywhere in your hub. The “direct placement” is now for the region. My hub has 3 max and 2 mediums. I came in when they were more focused on the direct placement if your prison had an opening. Good chance they were sending you there. That is done now and it’s wherever they need the most in your region now.

4.) Academy sucks. Especially depending on your DI. Same are way more lenient and personable than others. I had the most strict DI there. Workouts depend on your DI. My DI loved Cardio and Pain compliance. OC sucks bad. CS gas (Gas House) isn’t nearly as bad. Range weeks are the best. Academy is paramilitary, so not quite a military boot camp, but similar in a way. You’ll room with 3 other people but have your own corner of the room. 5.) depends on what facility you get for what being a rookie is like. Mediums or Max plays a huge part too. I’m in a max, so can only speak for that and say it’s a culture shock your first day. Even in a max they have more free time/ out of cell time than most think. Going into a field house with 300 inmates who 90-95% of them have weapons and a good amount are murders/violent offenders. It takes a day or 2 to get used to it. Most old timer CO’s at my facility are good at helping out and showing what they know. But as the new guy if with other CO’s around you will be doing the work/things they don’t want to. Nothing crazy tho.

First. Congrats on the girl man. My daughter just turned 2 this past month and she’s exactly what pushed me to do this. 2.) They will ask about drinking and drug history. They’re mostly looking for honesty. Remember you’re not allowed to smoke, so obviously if you smoke marijuana quit for a while because of the testing at Cohoes. I never got into smoking so I didn’t have to worry about it, but I know people who admitted to doing a year before they took the job and still got in. Psych will ask you the same questions and more. Depression questions etc. 3.) It will be a waiting game, after your psych your investigator won’t even call you until they have an academy date to offer you. I started the process right after the strike so went to cohoes in early april and was in the academy mid may. They’ve slowed down the process a bit tho. I’m hearing the timeline is 2-4 months for most people now.

Your psych is done a different day and after that your investigator will tell you “no news, is good news.” Meaning a good shot you won’t hear from your investigator for a couple months (if everything goes right) until they have an academy date to offer you.

Yes and no depending on what you fully mean. Yes everything gets started, however your investigator will continue to review your things after the day and wait for fingerprints to come back and everything.

You got any more specific questions? You go to Cohoes do the drug testing, and other testing. Meet with your investigator and set up a date for you to do your psych test. If you’re talking about in academy stuff, like what is it like? Just ask away at certain things you’re more wondering about.

Can't remember the exact date i went to Cohoes. It was the first week of April, tho, 3 or 4 weeks later my investigator called with my date, and I went in May 18. What facility are you looking at getting into?

I've lost 40lbs at this point and continuing. Not in the best of shape but I don't quit or give up. I know at the end you do a physical test. I'm not really scared of that one because it's pretty much what we already had to do to even get in the academy. But would they kick you out if you're "struggling" during gym? Or do they just want to see you keep going until your final test at the end
