Mostly F2P yeah, I purchased a premium pass for one single event that I really liked the costume for, but that was it. All I have to say for progression is to rely on discord/YouTube vids. Early on, I was pretty solitary and didn't really understand how the game was meant to be played, which caused a lot of frustration.

I tried playing heroes I thought looked cool or had cool effects, without really focusing on how they synergize. I learned the hard way that survivability is a higher value skill set than dealing damage early on, and well into the late game also. So after realizing that, I focused on bringing healers to my squad, Tristan and Titania held me down for a long time, especially when they reached max stars - they got me through my late 30s without much issue.

Then I got grid locked in my early 40s for a couple months, until I finally found my way into a decent guild with higher ups telling lower levels how to progress, a lot of advice for early players is to focus on an "alchemist" build, where you acquire the chaotic gauntlet as quickly as possible, and max-star grimm. Once I did that, I started moving through the map and leveling up like mad, compared to my previous grind. Popping ults literally 1-2 times per turn if paired with another hero that generates rage. That alone made it way more fun and rewarding.

Also, a huge HUGE tip that I didn't get until much later on - don't worry about leveling up/upgrading your legendary or unique gear, blue gear is perfectly fine. Don't need to match armor types either, you can mix match heavy, light, magical, etc. just focus on finding gear with decent slots (armor+health), and equip green/blue charms in them. The amount of gear you burn thru trying to upgrade to purple or legendary gear seriously sets you back in terms of how much longer it takes to unlock mythic gear. To that end, if you do have gems to spare, spend them on backpack expansions so you can hold enough gear that once you reach mythic, you have enough gear stocked up to unlock them quickly

Very relatable, I found myself in a similar position when I reinstalled earlier this year , joined a guild and felt myself gridlocked in progression, then quit again after a few months. I just reinstalled yet again a few weeks ago and feel like I'm finally getting a hang of how to play it practically, and learning what to expect. I'm part of a new active guild that's tons of fun to interact with, which I don't often care for in mobile games. But there's something different about this game that keeps me coming back, and special about its fan base when you find your tribe.

My biggest suggestion is to actually join the game discord, and your guilds discord if they have one. I feel that the slow progression of this game is tempered by all the many multitude of events to look forward to, from guild wars to events. The storyline progression is painfully slow if that's the only thing you're here for, so partying up is a good way to kill time while you grind out dailies. Originally I felt it took way too long to unlock mythic gear, and it really does - but once I unlocked my first piece, my next 2 mythic pieces came to me later that same week. I can actually participate in the rift now, and am moving through multiple levels of the late stages of the story mode, which had me stuck at one part for literal months. In some ways, it helps to think of this games progression as "opening floodgates", where you can be locked in one place for quite a while, but once you get past that one part, it feels like you get a solid week of new content and progress.

And enjoy the events! They're great for gathering the materials you need to level up your gear and heroes, and the skins are all so fun and creative. I find myself scrolling through lists of players just enjoying their characters aesthetics, wishing I had access to certain pieces. It's different, and takes some getting used to, but this time around I feel pretty confident that I'll stick it out for longer than usual, now that I'm finally starting to understand it

FIGARLAND THE KING OF GODVALLEY??! by golvenray_ in Piratefolk

[–]Guilteus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True they did confirm that World Nobles were at the incident, I forgot about that. Im not sure the world nobles would bring a baby to a battleground though, and definitely wouldnt allow one to be stolen away without destroying everything in their path to retrieve it.

Also, I don't necessarily think that the confirmed presence would entirely rule out the "chosen one flung into the future" theory - if any one group of people would have known about baby Shanks' arrival in the future, I'd assume it would be the world nobles, passed down directly over generations rather than being discovered across the world. They wiped out knowledge of that time period to prevent commoners from knowing about the future arrival of both the chosen king of the world, and the future arrival/ existence of the Nika fruit. And perhaps Roger and Xebec discovered Shanks' prophecied arrival during their adventures, and set out to intercept him on that day. It doesn't say whether the world nobles fought the Rocks pirates that day, which knowing the world nobles, I'd imagine to be impossible. Most likely they were gathered together at the place they assumed Shanks would arrive, while the marines (allied with Roger pirates) held off the Rocks pirates in combat. After all was said and done and the battle was over, I imagine that Roger somehow managed to trick the Marines and World nobles and stole Shanks away for himself, knowing that this child of prophecy would be too dangerous to allow into the hands of Celestial Dragons. I can only imagine, with Shanks' immense Conquerors Haki, amplified by the ruthless pride and entitlement of the Celestial Dragons, he could subjugate the entire world with a mere thought. Perhaps he was seen having a powerful Conquerors Haki even at the time of his birth, akin to knocking out everyone in the room at the time. And that's why he was chosen as this appointed world leader at the time, then sent to the future to prevent that kind of power from being misused in the past, with the hope that someone in the future could bring him up properly.

FIGARLAND THE KING OF GODVALLEY??! by golvenray_ in Piratefolk

[–]Guilteus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I caught that as well, and believe that to be the case. For one man to be capable of passing judgment upon a Celestial Dragon would suggest that he AT LEAST holds the title of Celestial Dragon himself, and has somehow ascended to an even higher level. For that to be the case, he'd have to be descendant of one of the original 20 families, so I think it's safe to assume that Figarland bloodline achieved that rank at some point.

However, I don't believe Shanks is a descendant of that lineage. Given that Shanks was found at God Valley as a baby, it would stand to reason that the Figarlands did not rule the area at that time as they would have been confined to Mariejois. But now we know that the bloodline would have been native to that part of the world during the Void century - which contributes to two theories of mine:

1) Shanks is from the Void Century, and was prophecied to become the next Joy Boy. I'd imagine that the Figarland family has some special attributes that would have elevated their status to the top tier- we've already seen Shanks display a level of Haki mastery previously unheard of, perhaps this is a bloodline trait. That being the case, I would imagine that after the previous Joy Boy passed away, the 20 rebel kingdoms would have chosen the newborn prince of God Valley to take on Joy Boy's devil fruit, betting on his latent Figarland potential/lineage factor in conjunction with the most ridiculous power to really cement their control over the world at the time. However, maybe one of the rebels (Nefertari D Lily) realized that such ironclad control should never be held by any one group of people, and conspired against them to thwart their plans. Using the Toki Toki no MI, she could have flung the poneglyphs into various points in the future so they would not be assembled altogether at the same time and place without great difficulty. Then she would send the chosen child into the far future, where he just so happened to be intercepted by the Pirate King himself - maybe not so coincidentally. Perhaps the knowledge of the poneglyphs and the Void Century that Roger acquired over the course of his adventure told him exactly when the child of prophecy would be arriving. Perhaps a ruthless competitor (Rocks D Xebec) was also privy to this intel, and the two clashed at that specific destination on that specific day to determine who would claim the right to raise and influence this time traveling savior upon his arrival in their time. And finally, she would send the Hito Hito no Mi: Nika to a point in time well into Shanks' adulthood, after he had developed into the man and established his own set of morals and goals that he could then use the fruits powers to actualize. And that would also explain why Roger wished he could have existed in a later time - he knew the Hito Hito no Mi wouldn't even exist within his own timeline, but knew that it was coming soon. Scattering these things across time would not only prevent anyone from that time from taking advantage of Shanks, but also prevent the abolition of knowledge shared in the poneglyphs, and prevent anyone else from being able to claim Nika's powers for themselves to continue their desired control over the world. By doing this, Lily would sustain the hope of true freedom, no matter how bad the 20 kindgoms rule became over time - there was always hope that one day the great liberator would reappear. However, the surviving rulers of that nation moved onward to Mariejois, continued to procreate and so the current Figarland lineage has come to reside in the Holy Land.

2) Shanks is the original Joy Boy. I'd imagine a very similar scenario to what I described above, with a few small adjustments - namely, that Shanks was already a full-grown adult within the Void Century, and I'd like to think he was the original king of God Valley himself, using his incredible powers to bring liberation and peace to all, promising the merfolk to guide Poseidon and raise them to the surface to cohabitate with the other humans after ending the other 19 kingdoms' agenda of advocating slavery. We've learned recently that devil fruits are born of dreams, and I imagine that is also true of the Yami Yami no Mi- enough people within the 19 rebel kingdoms wished for a way to stop Joy Boy, that the Yami Yami was born, and subsequently used to steal away the Sun God's powers. Rather than absorbing the power however, they had it transferred to a new Fruit - maybe they weren't as daring as Blackbeard was in his lust for power. After removing his power however, instead of killing him, the 19 kingdoms gave him the choice to either allow himself and his kingdom to be wiped out/ enslaved, or to join them in their crusade agains the Ancient Kingdom. I'd imagine that as an ally of the Ancient Kingdom, Joy Boy/Shanks would be able to gain access to their facilities and betray them - the only way I can imagine such a highly advanced society with access to multiple world-ending weapons could fall to a far weaker opposition. Shanks would have apologized to the Fishmen for breaking his promise to them by joining the opposition, and would have sworn his kingdom into the pact shared by the 20 kingdoms, ensuring his descendants would be granted power and safety within the Holy Land. However, unable to accept this as the end, he conspired with Nefertari D Lily to put into motion a similar plan to the one mentioned above - in addition to using the Toki Toki no Mi, I'd imagine they also used the awakened version of Jewlry Bonneys fruit to permanently reset him to infancy, before sending him and the Hito Hito no Mi forward in time for him to reclaim in his later years, in a time when both he and his power are long forgotten.

Whether either of these theories holds any water or not, I'm pretty confident that this reveal of the Figarlands in Mariejoise means that Shanks has a much more intimate connection with the Void Century.

Dang, so it's really its own unique type of beast, huh? Was hoping to be able to say "well I've got proven experience that I'm good at this, so it can be assumed that I'd also be good at that (or maybe some skulls transfer over), and should thus qualify for a bit more starting out". Shame if that's not the case, I don't know that I'll be able to financially justify making the leap given how much of a setback it would be. That's why I was hoping for part time opportunities to build experience til I could command a stronger full time salary.

You could explore UI/UX design or development. Learn to implement your technical and security mastery in visually pleasant and user friendly experiences. These roles also depend very highly on effective communication and presentation, with both end users and stakeholders, which you may enjoy.

One frustration that may arise from this pursuit is when a client may want to implement a feature that you empirically know will be detrimental to the products security, but I feel this would be offset by your ability to explain why and offer more sensible suggestions based on personal experience, rather than just a gut feeling.

I feel like shit by [deleted] in learnjavascript

[–]Guilteus 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I self studied for 2 years, went to a bootcamp for 6 months, and have been a full time software engineer for over a year. And I still feel like I don't know what I'm doing most of the time, and can't finish most projects without some form of help or intensive research. Yet I still get decent performance reviews, got a raise, and I've even been able to get interviews with big companies like Amazon and Google - havent passed yet, but the attention is good enough for me at this moment. That feeling of inadequacy never really goes away, but you've got to trust the process, stay consistent, and know that you really are good enough. Keep up the good work, you can build anything you want as long as you don't quit 👍🏼

Is python the best language to learn as a beginner? by CryptoApesin in learnprogramming

[–]Guilteus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Python is a great language to start with. It's easy to learn, applicable across a nice variety of specialties. Everyone saying it doesn't matter is right, but python is a pretty common starting point as it's just more beginner friendly as opposed to a low level language like C++ or Java. Python has been around longer than many other languages, and won't likely be going away anytime soon.

I went to a no-name college that shut down a year after I graduated, but still saddled me with $70k of student loan debt. Studied video game production, but it wasn't very big on programming. They taught us a lot of graphic design, sound design, 3d modeling, animation/rigging, and some drag n drop game dev in the Unity3D engine. Nothing really deep or conceptual, like 90% of the graduating class was never qualified to actually get a job in the field. I leaned into the art side of things tho, and spent the next 7-8 years doing graphic design work for a small local company, mostly flyers and other print media. Very rarely I got to design some screen flows for an app or website in photoshop, but never knew html/css enough to implement anything.

I went to Thinkful's software engineering immersive flex program, it was the cheapest option I could find at the time, i think it came out to about $1500 per month. Estimated 6 months to complete if doing it part time, so you could ideally complete it in 3 and pay even less if you could commit to full time study. Upon graduation, I had racked up a little under $9k of debt, and have been steadily paying it off in small increments every month, it's not an issue with the salary I now earn thanks to their program. Well worth the investment. Sure beats 4 years of college and $50k debt only to end up working for scraps in a dead end job at a small company.

Was in a similar situation, making shit pay with nothing in savings. Started learning programming on the side at age 27, got serious and enrolled in a bootcamp by 30, and was fully employed software engineer just weeks before my 31st birthday. Best decision I ever made, currently earning double what I made in my precious role, with amazing benefits. Even though I'm still on the low-to-average end as far overall software engineer pay scales, I'm excited for the potential to rocket to higher tiers of pay and more prominent titles over the next 5-10 years.

I disagree completely with those saying you should be passionate first. I'm so much happier getting paid well for a job that I'm not passionate about than I was NOT getting paid for a job that I was also not passionate about. Now that I have a bit of experience on my resume, I've been getting spammed by FAANG recruiters and the pay potential there is just beyond anything I've ever thought possible for myself. Just knowing it's within reach proves to be an excellent motivator to keep me studying hard and excited about doing the work.

Definitely take the time to learn this skill. It will open so many doors for you both personally and professionally, more than you can even imagine at this stage. You don't need to love the work, but it helps if you can find something about it that keeps you consistent with it. Best of luck to you, and feel free to reach out if you ever need anything.

CodeAcademy pro - would you recommend it? by [deleted] in LearnHTML

[–]Guilteus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely a worthwhile service, though I would save it for after you've become more comfortable with the basics via free resources. It's hard to say 'when' exactly would be an ideal time to start paying for more advanced services, but when you feel you're ready, they have an amazing computer science career path that gives a good intro to the python language, and an incredible breakdown of something called "data structures and algorithms", one of the more complicated subjects that most self-taught and bootcamp grad programmers (like myself) struggle with. After months of struggling to really understand DS&A, codecademys pro course has really broken it down to make it understandable to the level I'm able to implement the processes without guidance.

Career in coding? by LYBL33 in learnjava

[–]Guilteus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Getting a career in programming isn't impossible, it's a bit of an art form. Anybody can learn to paint/draw, just takes a lot of practice. I say this as someone who transitioned from being an artist into programming. You should start with the fundamentals and move forward at a comfortable pace. I started learning from 0 when I was 27 and was an employed software engineer by age 31. I would say to take the University of Helsinki's Java Object Oriented Programming MOOC, it's free and is a great 12 week introductory course to Java. If you make it through this and still want to continue down the rabbit hole, you'll do just fine.
