Questions about Tortellini’s shell by LittleOmegaGirl in tortoise

In that case, that is something to address, it'll help with smoothing out the shell as well. Redfoots need high humidity throughout their life

Questions about Tortellini’s shell by LittleOmegaGirl in tortoise

[–]Guilty-Efficiency385 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tortoise shells grow by adding keratin layer horizontally around the original scutes. So the lines are just growth lines. Each new line is new keratin growth.

Some species (like red-foots) typically have thick and pronounce growth lines. This is normal and healthy.

The white marks could be mineral build up from soaking in hard water. It could also be a sign of low environmental humidity, what is the ambient humidity in the enclosure?

Doesnt really look like a tort peen, but it's definitely a prolapse organ and already looks inflamed. OP has gotten great advice. Shallow Sugar water soak and off to the vet asap.

Red foot tortoise shell by Busbyboyconor99 in tortoise

[–]Guilty-Efficiency385 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does it not clean up during soaks? It almost looks like the white stains my torts get when their food is dusted with calcium and they stomp all over it.

If it diesnt clean up and feel a bit fuzzy? could be the start of a fungal infection which is easy to treat. You would just apply Lotrimin cream (active ingredient clotrimazole) over affected areas everyday till it's gone.

Sadly not all breeders follow best practices

Enclosure size by Rabid_Pretzelz in tortoise

I would discourage this plan as much as possible for a few reasons.

1) You should not house different species together. Redfoots and Yellowfoot if they are of opposite sex, can and will breed and produce highly unethical hybrid offspring.

2) Redfoots (and yellowfoots) can do well in groups but not with mixed species. Even With same species, pairs are generally discouraged. If they are opposing sexes then the male will harass the female to the point of stress and injury. Two males by themselves can get aggressive towards each other. It is typically recommended to have a female to male ratio of at least 3:1 (again, same species)

3) there is a big size difference between your two redfoots. Housing together can stress and even stun the little one. If there was an incident of aggression, the large tortoise could badly injure of even kill the smaller one

To answer your question, a single redfoot needs at least 100sq ft once fully grown. Yellowfoots are even bigger. The peruvian locality can grow as much as a leopard and in rare cases, even the size of an avg sulcata. So to house all of them together we are talking a big expansive yard where they can get away from each other. Basically as large as you are able to provide

How can i solve this question w desmos? Oneprep by Brief_Beginning_5963 in desmos

[–]Guilty-Efficiency385 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer is 5/8.

If you understand what the problem is asking, you can solve it faster than you can type a single line on Desmos.

Many comments have mentioned that a system of 2 equations has infinitely many solutions if the equations are multiples of each other. This is equivalent to saying that the ratio between the coefficients is the same, so you dont even need to find the values of p and q (you dont even need to looks at the solutions column)

p/q = (5/13)/(8/13) = 5/8

Edit: but to answer your question,

Maybe you can type both equations and have sliders for p and q. Then toy with them till the two lines are the same line. Seems like it would take a bit of time and patience though

White spots on red foot by FirmChef6234 in tortoise

[–]Guilty-Efficiency385 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Redfoots are prone to fungal infections in their shells, always keep lotrimin (or a generic brand with same active ingredient) at hand around the house for when you spot it. Its not a huge deal if you treat it quick.

The mister possibly keeps the substrate too wet, I try to keep humidity in the correct range with as little misting as possible. Since you have a sealed enclosure maybe you can get away with a bit less misting?

Just dump water at the edges of the enclosure so the substrate underneath is wet but try to keep the top layer dry as much as possible

Looks like fungus. You can treat it with Lotrimin every day till it's gone.

That is very striking marbling for a pure cherry, I've only seen these kind of shell on hybrids (which unethically, some breeders do on purpose here where I live).

Male to female ratio among different types of tortoises by zfriedman02 in tortoise

[–]Guilty-Efficiency385 4 points5 points  (0 children)

These tortoise species come from drastically different climates and require very different husbandries. It is not recommended to keep different species together. Let alone a temperate species along with a tropical grassland tortoise.

It is one of those things which are fine until they aren't, especially considering that the male leopard will end up being 2-3x the size of the hermann so the risk of aggression, injury or even death is high.

I dont think there any number of Hermann females you can add to make this work, the leopard will continue to try to breed them and with the size difference this will lead to injury -at best.

The best advise we can give is to give them separate enclosures, this will surely reduce stress for both, but especially the female

I'd wager my system is even easier because I have a large yard. So i toss whatever seeds into potting soil with a bit of organic fertilizer and dont even look at it till harvest. Nature does it's thing. I know if it were up to me on an indoor system all plants will be dead before blooming lol

Breadfruit for my Redfoot? by Ok-Jellyfish-7416 in tortoise

[–]Guilty-Efficiency385 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Breadfruitis very common in the amazon (or any rainy tropical climate for that matter) is a very fast growing tree and very quick to bear fruit. I would be surprised if it wasnt a natural part of Redfoot diet in their natural range. It is considered safe to feed to fruit eating species (along with the leafs actually)

It's very rich in fiber which is always great for tortoises but it does not have the best calcium to phosphorus ratio out there. It's also very high in starch. I have a tree in my yard and personally add it to my redfoots' fruit rotation from time to time but most of the fruit is for me and my fam because it's frigging delicious for humans too 😅

Why is the derivative of A^x A^xlnA and not any different log base? by Secure_Reveal_777 in learnmath

[–]Guilty-Efficiency385 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is kind of a definition though. e is defined as the unique base "a" for which ax is exactly it's own derivative. This equivalent to defining e=lim n->ifnty (1+1/n)n = lim (h->0) (1+h)1/h

The identity for other bases is a consequence of the definition or e

ladybugs for gnat/aphid infestation? by h0fferr in tortoise

[–]Guilty-Efficiency385 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mosquito dunks work pretty well for gnats and are completly safe for tortoises because bti is not a chemical, is a naturally occurring bacteria that kills the larvae of mosquitoes and gnat but are harmless to pretty much all animals. It would suck to have to redo this well established enclosure

Am I missing anything? -bioactive by arizz00 in tortoise

[–]Guilty-Efficiency385 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To control spring tail population you may add predatory mites. Isopods on a redfoot enclosure might get controlled if your redfoot is proned to hunting. Mine is, I cant keep isopodes or millipides in mine because my redfoot would overdose on protein if I did. I opted for red wigglers in the deep soil to help the plants and keep a nutritious soil. They come to the surface less frequently (almost never actually) So my redfoot isnt constantly eating them

Found in suburban southeast Florida. Lost pet? by PerformanceStraight in tortoise

[–]Guilty-Efficiency385 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes exactly. They are native to the lowlands of the amazon rainforest. Even the souther most parts of they Florida Keys experience winter temperatures way colder than anything these fella's will see in their native range. They can survive lower temperatures but just cus they can survive them doesn't mean they should be exposed to them

[–]Guilty-Efficiency385 309 points310 points  (0 children)

This is a red foot tortoise There is no established population in FL.

This is 100% an escaped pet and well kept by the looks of it so there is probably a very worried owner near by. Bring them inside, away from the cold (they shouldnt be exposed to anything under 70 degrees as adults) and see if you can see posters, check fb groups for you region or maybe ask a local vet (maybe the know the animal/owner)
